Full Name: Ōkami Amaterasu, Origin of All That Is Good and Mother To Us All
Nicknames: Ammy, Snowy, Snowball, Snowflake, Furball, Pochi, etc.
Age: Ageless/Unknown
Height: ~30 in (at shoulder)
Weight: ~70 lbs
Gender: Female
Race: Goddess
Alliance: Good
Home: Celestial Plain
Franchise: Okami
Physical Description: Amaterasu has two main forms, one her physical earthly avatar, and one that very few people have ever seen and really the only person who saw it during her second stint on earth after her decent from the Celestial Plain was a ghost who could only see a person’s true spirit, not their physical body. Even her physical avatar’s true form can only be seen by those who truly believe in the gods, appearing as a white wolf to those without faith.
Amaterasu’s earthly avatar takes the form of a white wolf with red markings on its face and back and clouds coming off of its body at the shoulders, ankles, and tail. The tail also doubles as a paintbrush and can manifest a sort of celestial ink, which Amaterasu uses to perform Celestial Brush techniques. On Amaterasu’s back is the Divine Instrument Divine Retribution, a Reflector (mirror) that radiates a sort of divine fire. Despite this, Amaterasu cannot use it as a source for her Inferno Brush Technique.
Amaterasu’s true godly form is that of a young, wolf-like woman wearing a white and red kimono. In this form, she has long white hair with white wolf ears sprouting out from her head. Her body is still covered with the red markings from before. The end of her long white hair forms her Celestial Brush in this form.
Weapons: The main weapons Amaterasu uses are the three types of Divines Instruments, the Reflector, the Rosary, and the Glaive. However, because of her lack of strength on the island, of these weapons, she only has the Reflector Divine Retribution, the Rosary Devout Beads, and the Glaive Tsumugari.
Amaterasu’s other main weapon is as much of a power as it is a weapon. It is the Celestial Brush Amaterasu wields, which allows her to use Celestial Brush Techniques to purify the land and vanquish evil.
Abilities/Powers: Amaterasu’s powers are focused around the 13 Celestial Brush Techniques she possesses. Each Brush Technique is guarded by a minor god, and the gods each are very linked to Amaterasu herself, even resembling her wolf form with their color scheme and markings.
Sunrise: A technique linked to Amaterasu herself that summons the sun in the sky, changing night to day or prolonging the day. When Amaterasu is at full strength, this technique has the power to banish darkness.
Rejuvination: A technique that belonged to Yomigami, the God of Reincarnation. It restores broken or damaged objects back to their former splendor.
Power Slash: A technique that belonged to Tachigami, the Rending God. It is a powerful slashing technique that can cut though almost anything, even iron.
Greensprout: A collection of three techniques that belonged to the Hanagami trio of gods, Sakigami, Hasugami, and Tsutagami. Sakigami’s technique is Bloom, which causes flowers to sprout, cherry blossom trees to bloom, and trees to grow. Hasugami’s technique is Water Lily, which causes a large water lily to appear on water and act as a platform for Amaterasu. Tsutagami’s technique is Vine, which can cause a vine to sprout from a Konohana Blossom, grab Amaterasu, and pull her to it. As you can expect, the only one of these techniques that get any kind of use on the Island is Bloom; Water Lily has very limited uses and Vine cannot be used on the Island currently due to the lack of Konohana Blossoms; as such, it’s listed here for completion purposes.
Cherry Bomb: A technique that belonged to Bakugami, the God of Explosions. This technique summons a large lighted bomb. Not something the average mortal wants near them.
Waterspout: A technique that belonged to Nuregami, the Aqueous God. This technique allows Amaterasu to manipulate water, make it rain, create geysers, etc.
Crescent: A technique that belonged to Yumigami, the God of the Bow. Like Amaterasu’s Sunrise, Crescent causes the moon to rise in the sky, changing day to night or prolonging the night.
Galestorm: A technique that belonged to Kazegami, the God of Wind. It is a technique that causes wind to blow, either causing a strong gust or creating a powerful whirlwind.
Inferno: A technique that belonged to Moegami, the Blazing God. This technique can create streams of fire from an existing fire source, but it can also summon a powerful Fireburst.
Veil of Mist: A technique that belonged to Kasugami, the Faint God. The technique summons a mist that slows down time around Amaterasu for exactly four seconds.
Catwalk: A technique that belonged to Kabegami, the Wall God. This technique allows Amaterasu to walk on walls with the aid of a Kabegami Statue. Completely useless on the island due to its lack of said statues.]
Thunderstorm: A technique that belonged to Gekigami, the God of Onslaught. This technique allows Amaterasu to manipulate existing electricity, most commonly that of thunderstorms, or summon her own electrical bolt.
Blizzard: The final of the Celestial Brush Techniques, a technique that belonged to Itegami, the Frost God. This technique allows Amaterasu to freeze objects solid.
Skills: Ammy’s ability to solve any problem by headbutting it has to count. She’s also regarded as the “Hole-Digging King”, so that probably counts for something too.
Personality: Amaterasu is a warm-hearted and kind goddess, going out of her way to aid mortals, even if it’s just to gain the praise she needs to become stronger. She’s very loveable, but she can also be lazy and arrogant at times, even falling asleep during conversations or head-butting people who bore her. Even though she dislikes taking such paths, she knows that sacrifices may be needed to do the right thing. She’s rather attached to Issun, and considers him a good friend.
History: (CONTAINS MASSIVE OKAMI SPOILERS SERIOUSLY MAN THIS IS THE GODDESS MAIN CHARACTER I’M TALKING ABOUT HERE FOR NAGI’S SAKE

The history of Amaterasu, as the Origin of All That Is Good and Mother to Us All (i.e. the lead goddess of her pantheon), stretches back to the origin of Nippon itself, but the part recorded in this history is considered her most important tale. It begins with an attack on the Celestial Plain by the eight-headed snake, Orochi. During the battle, Amaterasu is entangled in Orochi’s body and is pulled down from the Celestial Plain to the mortal world of Nippon after Waka, a member of the Moon Tribe who had fought alongside Amaterasu, prophesizes that Orochi cannot be defeated without the help of a mortal chosen one. The Celestial Plain is destroyed by the vast demon army that Orochi had brought with him, and the Celestials escape onto the Ark of Yamato together with Waka. However, they did not know that the Ark was in truth a prison for thousands of demons and the Lord of Darkness, Yami, and all of the Celestials were killed, with the only survivor being Waka himself. To make matters worse, the Ark crashed into Nippon, releasing thousands of demons into the world.
Upon his arrival in the mortal realm, Orochi took up residence in the Moon Cave outside Kamiki Village where he began a gruesome tradition: sacrifice a maiden to him on the the day of the Kamiki Festival, or he will destroy their village. The village complied for 100 years. During this time, Amaterasu waited for the birth of the chosen one, coming to the village every year around the time of the festival. Because of this habit and their inability to see her true form, the Kamiki villagers named her Shiranui and considered her a familiar of Orochi who came to the village to size up the next sacrifice for him. Some time after Amaterasu’s descent to the mortal realm, she met her Celestial Envoy, Ishaku, one of the Poncle tribe. Ishaku was Amaterasu’s only way to communicate with mortals, because only Poncles could communicate with the gods.
Finally, the Chosen One, Nagi, came. Nagi considered himself the “Greatest Worrier” (He meant to spell it warrior, but Nagi wasn’t exactly what you would call the sharpest knife in the drawer) in Kamiki and would be the one to slay Orochi. Nagi also knew that the woman he loved, Nami, would be the one who would be sacrificed this year, as she was the most beautiful maiden in the village. Nagi attempted to fight Amaterasu many times, but she always was able to escape from him.
The night of the festival came, and Nami was chosen to be the sacrifice as predicted. After Nagi disguised himself as Nami in order to enter the Moon Cave, he attempted to fight Orochi, but to no avail. It was then that Amaterasu appeared and fought Orochi in Nagi’s place. Over the hours the battle took, Amaterasu appeared to receive many wounds, but near the end of the fight, she seemed to be doing exceptionally badly, because halfway through the fight, she had gotten a premonition of something that would happen to her future self and travelled through time and space to Wawku Shrine in Kamui, the northern part of Nippon, where her much weakened future self and an Oina warrior named Oki were fighting the clockwork owl demons Lechku and Nechku. Amaterasu aided her future self in the fight, but when Lechku stopped time and attempted to give a devastating attack that would surely kill Oki, Amaterasu managed to move in time to knock Oki out of the way and take the rest of the attack. Amaterasu’s future self eventually defeated the two owls with Oki’s help, and Amaterasu waited for Ishaku to find her again before travelling back to the fight with Orochi. She lifted her head up to the skies and howled, bringing the moon out from behind the clouds and giving Nagi the power and resolve he needed to defeat Orochi. Nagi cleaved the giant snake’s heads in two, finally ending the giant creature’s life. However, it could not be completely killed, only sealed away, and Nagi used his own sword, Tsukuyomi to seal the giant snake away before taking the dying Amaterasu back to Kamiki village. It was there she died, and a shrine dedicated to her was placed in front of Konohana, the sacred tree of the town.
100 years passed, and the people of Kamiki lived on their lives. As time went on, the people of Nippon began to lose more and more faith in the gods, and their powers dwindled. One day, a man who wanted to disprove the legend of Nagi and Shiranui travelled to the Moon Cave and removed the sword Tsukuyomi. This turned out to be a huge mistake, as the seal on Orochi was broken and Orochi began wreaking his havoc upon Nippon, spreading his cursed zones all over the land. Only one place was protected: the tiny hamlet of Kamiki. The dying spirit of the sacred Konohana, Sakuya, protected the village and used her powers to revive Amaterasu by bringing the statue of Shiranui to life. It was after this that the newly awoken Amaterasu, weakened from many years spent as a statue, was introduced to Issun, a Poncle who was wandering Nippon and had been spending his time napping in Sakuya’s cleavage. Issun began to travel with Amaterasu after finding out that she could easily learn the Celestial Brush Techniques he’d been trying to teach himself after Yomigami and Tachigami appear to her. He started off by introducing her to the people of Kamiki Village once the village had been awakened by a combination of Amaterasu’s Sunrise and Power Slash techniques, and gave her the nickname of Ammy. Two particularly notable residents of the village were Kushi, the village sake girl and probably the most beautiful maiden in Kamiki, and Susano, a descendant of Nagi and the “Greatest Worrier” in Kamiki and apparently the whole world. He was also extremely lazy and didn’t train with his swords at all. After Ammy got Susano to cleave open the boulder blocking the entrance to the village (with her help), Susano ran off to parts unknown, and Sakuya gave Ammy the task of reviving her children trees, the Guardian Saplings that had sprung from her own roots. Ammy and Issun went off together, travelling Eastern Nippon and reviving the Guardian Saplings that guarded the land. As they went, they defeated some of Orochi’s strongest minions, such as the Spider Queen, who guarded the Tsuta Ruins, and Crimson Helm, a powerful demon who had sprung from the slain Orochi’s blood and had been terrorizing Kusa Village for the century that had passed since Orochi’s death. During this time, Ammy had several encounters with a quite simply very pretty man named Waka, who apparently knew Ammy 100 years ago, and was a bit of a prophet, if “half-baked” according to Issun. During their first couple encounters, Ammy and Waka fought, ending in victory for Ammy.
Eventually, the time of the festival grew near, and Ammy traveled back to Kamiki, where it was discovered a distraught Susano had locked himself in his home and had drank all of the 8 Purification Sake, a mystic sake that supposedly had been used to defeat Orochi, in his depression. From within his home, Susano revealed that he was the person who had released Orochi’s seal and was the reason Orochi was once again terrorizing Nippon. Mr. Orange, the village leader and elder, realizes this means that Orochi’s tradition of sacrificing a beautiful maiden each year around the time of the festival has started again just as a white plumed arrow strikes the home of Kushi. Kushi realizes what this means and, in lieu of 8 Purification Sake, grabs some of her own Thunder Brew to try to fight Orochi with before Ammy gives her a ride to the Moon Cave. Ammy intends to fight Orochi once inside Moon Cave, and eventually manages to make her way to Orochi himself. She fights him, getting him drunk using Kushi’s Thunder Brew (which, through divine intervention, is magically transformed into 8 Purification Sake) and defeating each head in turn. However, in the end, it is Susano who kills Orochi, slicing seven of the heads off with Ammy’s help, and then cleaving the final head down the middle on his own. With the serpent finally dead, Kushi, Susano, Issun, and Ammy return to Kamiki for the festival.
After the festival, Ammy and Issun depart toward the capital of Sei-an City, where it is discovered that a mysterious mist is ravaging the city, the Water Dragon that had once protected the waters around Ryoshima Coast is now destroying any supply vessels heading toward the city, and the queen has holed herself up in her palace and refuses to come out. With the help of a very, very busty and beautiful priestess named Rao, the two of them managed to get rid of the mist (which was being caused by a demon named Blight who had taken residence in the emperor’s body), stopped the threat of the Water Dragon, and discovered why the queen was hiding in her palace: she was trying to find the location of Oni Island, the source of all of their troubles and supposedly the stronghold of all demons. However, as things went on, Ammy was getting rather suspicious of Rao, culminating in Otohime, the queen of the Dragonians, receiving a vision showing Rao getting attacked by a shadowy figure. Issun didn’t notice it, but Ammy noticed that the Rao in the vision was slightly different from the one they knew; the Rao in the vision wore blue beads around her neck and didn’t cover one of her eyes with her hair. Ammy had recently returned the Fox Rods, a weapon that supposedly was the only thing that could defeat Ninetails, the leader of the demons on Oni Island, to Rao, but she’d been having her suspicions about them ever since she found them inside the Water Dragon, not in the wreckage of the ship that they’d supposedly been being transported in. Ammy travelled to Ankoku Shrine, where Rao’s spirit led them to a hidden well. Down in the bottom of the well, Ammy found a skeleton wearing similar clothes to Rao’s. Issun didn’t seem to realize who it was, but Ammy very much did, and rushed through the tunnel in the bottom of the well to Queen Himiko’s palace. She reached Queen Himiko’s chambers too late, and found the queen dead, her crystal ball beside her, and a cowering Rao seemed to be losing hope, thinking that the forces of darkness couldn’t be fought anymore. Ammy, having realized things, didn’t fall for the fox’s trick, and attacked Rao, forcing her to reveal her true nature as Ninetails. Since Himiko’s chamber was too small for Ninetails’ true form, he instead used the power of the Fox Rods to transform into a more foxlike version of Rao and fight Ammy. Ammy managed to defeat him, but he only retreated to Oni Island. All seemed to be lost until Himiko’s spirit, trapped within the crystal ball, revealed the path to Oni Island. The crystal ball then shattered and Himiko’s spirit passed to the afterlife. From there, Ammy and Issun travelled to Oni Island with Otohime’s help, and once there defeated Ninetails.
But even then things were not over. Ammy still had one Brush God left to find and there was the pressing issue of the dark essences that had escaped from Orochi, Ninetails and Blight’s bodies. They had all flown toward the northern lands Issun hailed from, and despite Issun’s protests, Ammy traveled to the northern lands of Kamui. It was shortly after entering and battling Oki of the nearby Oina tribe that Ammy discovered what was going on in these snowy lands: the demons were bombarding the land with a snowstorm and they would all freeze to death on the Day of Darkness, an impending solar eclipse that came only once every 100 years. Not only that, but the only person who can make the twin volcanoes of Ezofuji erupt and keep them from freezing, a little girl named Lika, has disappeared. To make matters worse, Ammy has finally discovered where exactly the Ark of Yamato landed when it crashed to the earth 100 years ago: in Laochi Lake behind Wep’keer, the Oina village.
Eventually, Ammy and Issun discovered that Lika’s scent lead to a forest that was supposed to be sealed off and forbidden known as Yoshpet. Issun seemed very reluctant to go in, but Kai, Lika’s sister, led the way through the forest to a clearing where the Poncle village of Ponc’tan lay. Issun refused to go in, so Ammy used a magical hammer called the Lucky Mallet to enter the village, where she discovers that Issun was Ishaku, her former Celestial Envoy,’s grandson, and after Issun was pressed too far by Ishaku, and Issun stole a sketch of Sakuya (the same sketch that Issun showed Ammy soon after she reawakened, in fact) and ran away from Ponc’tan. After Ammy left, she and Issun proceeded further into the woods, finally making their way to the Spirit Gate Lika was supposedly seen going in to. Ammy, Issun, and Oki, who had somehow made his way through Yoshpet on his own, entered the Spirit Gate, and exited in Kamiki Village 100 years ago. After accidentally knocking out Nagi, Ammy and Issun do the best they can to get history back on track again; stealing Nami’s clothes to disguise Nagi as her, taking Nagi to the Moon Cave, and taking him to where Orochi waited in the Moon Cave to fight him. She battled Orochi much as she had before, and Nagi cleaved the demon’s heads. However, toward the end, Nagi was nearly killed by a falling rock before Shiranui suddenly showed up to save him. Oki disappeared soon after this event, and Ammy and Issun proceeded back through the Spirit Gate to the present, having found Lika on top of Orochi’s body. As they arrive back, they find the Day of Darkness is beginning, and rush to Wawku Shrine. The news isn’t good; Oki, in his rush to fight the demons Lechku and Nechku broke the gate to the shrine open, and the village might just freeze without the Day of Darkness’ help anyways. Ammy ran though the gate to the shrine and rushed through, freeing the 13th and final Brush God, Itegami, as she went. She eventually found Nechku, and attempted to fight it, but Amaterasu has little luck until suddenly, of all wolves, Shiranui appeared. Shiranui helped Amaterasu defeat Nechku, but the owl was down, not out. Oki appeared and attempted to kill the owl, who then froze time before trying to stab Oki. Shiranui managed to break free of the time freeze long enough to push Oki out of the way and get stabbed herself. Oki stayed with the dying Shiranui until Ishaku came to take her back to the past, while Amaterasu proceeded onward. Oki and Amaterasu reunited at where they would fight Lechku and Nechku, the two cooperating to defeat the owls. Upon their defeat, the final dark presences escaped from them, and the dark presences entered the Ark of Yamato with the others. It was then that the Ark of Yamato, for the first time in 100 years, lifted from Laochi Lake. Amaterasu proceeded up the path into the Ark, but close to the entrance, Issun stopped her. It was then that Issun stated that he no longer could follow Ammy, having seen all of the brush techniques and finished his quest. It was then that Waka appeared, stated that his path to the heavens had finally appeared, and taunted Issun for his lack of resolve before saying that he couldn’t get on the Ark even if he wanted to. Issun then angrily tries to enter but is repelled by a barrier. The path into the Ark then begins to dissolve and Amaterasu and Waka are trapped inside, despite Amaterasu’s attempts to keep Issun in her sights, while Issun is left in lake.
Once inside the Ark, Amaterasu meets the ghosts of the Celestials who were slain in the Ark as she goes and fights the Spider Queen, Crimson Helm, Orochi, Blight, and Ninetails all over again to open the path to the Lord of Darkness himself, Yami. Once in Yami’s chamber, she finds Waka attempting to fight the large, impenetrable sphere that was Yami’s physical form. Yami attacks Waka, knocking away his hat and revealing his long flowing blond hair, a trademark of the Moon Tribe, before attacking him again and knocking Waka off the platform. It is then that the Day of Darkness finally hits, and Amaterasu is stripped of her powers, reducing her to a simple white wolf. Yami then takes this chance to strip Amaterasu of her brush techniques. After this ensues a long, arduous battle where Amaterasu slowly beats her brush techniques from Yami, regaining them one by one and using them against him. After finally regaining all 13 and seemingly defeating Yami, Amaterasu is encouraged by an imaginary Issun to give one of her famous victory howls. However, mid-howl, Yami grabs her, and squeezes the life out of Amaterasu as well as destroying the constellations the Brush Gods were born from in the first place. Yami throws the broken and beaten Amaterasu to the ground and takes his final form. It looks like things are done for for Amaterasu, but suddenly, she begins to hear the prayers of Issun of all people.
Issun had finally realized his destiny as the Celestial Envoy and got his ass in gear, running around Nippon and spreading his paintings of Amaterasu around, giving speeches about the power of gods and how people shouldn’t just pray because they want something. The sudden influx of faith returns Amaterasu to her full strength, her markings and aura becoming the same of those she had back when she fought Orochi 100 years ago. Using this sudden power, Amaterasu finally defeats Yami for good, annihilating him for all eternity. Amaterasu and Waka then travel together to the Celestial Plain, planning to finally bring peace and harmony back to the world.
Time passed. Amaterasu had been working on bringing peace back to Nippon when she sensed something from another island out in the void. The Dimensional Island had long attracted her attention, but it wasn’t until she sensed the arrival of not one, but two gods she recognized on the island that she finally decided to investigate things, and travelled through the Void to the island.
Other: Amaterasu can’t be understood without the help of a Celestial Envoy/Poncle, unless you’re a god yourself, and thus will seem mute to just about everyone.
Even though the Nami and Nagi of her world are very different from the Izanami and Izanagi of other worlds, Amaterasu is very familiar with her father and aunt and the creation myth related to them, and it’s entirely possible that she resulted from that myth. All myths are true (to an extent) in Nippon, after all.
