Full Name: Issun, the 7th Celestial Envoy
Nicknames: Bug, Insect, etc.
Age: Unknown
Height: 1” (or 3 cm)
Weight: Hardly anything
Gender: Male
Race: Poncle
Alliance: Good
Home: Ponc’tan
Franchise: Okami
Physical Description: Issun is a very tiny boy. As stated above, he’s only about an inch tall, and because of this, most people can’t see him for what he really appears. He has the short proportions of all Poncles that make him look like a child, but he’s most likely an adult. He has black hair, and a somewhat prominent nose. On top of his head he wears a large green beetle shell for a helmet, complete with antennae. This is the main feature that causes most people to confuse him for a bug. He also wears a blue tunic and a green cape made from a leaf; as well as brown boots. Strapped to his waist is the sheath for his sword, Denkoumaru. His entire body glows with a green light that changes color based on his emotions. This light and the helmet are really the only parts of him anyone usually sees, and most of his body is usually enveloped in shadow thanks to the helmet.
Weapons: Issun’s weapon in a sword called Denkoumaru. It is a very tiny katana (fit for the very tiny boy that Issun is) with a blade at one end and a brush at the other. Issun uses the brush end to use Celestial Brush techniques, while he can use the sword end to fight. It’s pretty useless for actual battle, though Amaterasu can fling Issun at foes and have him attack them using her own Celestial Brush.
Abilities/Powers: As a Poncle, Issun can communicate with animals naturally, which aided in his communications with Amaterasu, but he can also communicate with the gods due to being the Celestial Envoy. This means that it is his duty to remind people that the gods still exist and that people are still being protected by them.
He is also capable of using all of the Celestial Brush techniques that Amaterasu can, though his techniques are powered more by his artistic skill than any divine power.
He can also bounce to get around (which is oh so much faster than walking), but this seems to come with the species.
Skills: Issun’s greatest skill is painting. He is the greatest painter in Ponc’tan, and for this reason was chosen to be the next Celestial Envoy.
Personality: Issun is rather brash and quick to offer his own opinions on things, often calling himself the “brains of the operation” when it comes to himself and Amaterasu. Despite this, he and Amaterasu have a rather close friendship.
He often speaks without restraint or tact, and expresses some rather loud appreciation for any hot babe he meets. He’s quite the pervert, and doesn’t bother hiding it when it comes to “hot babes.”
His big pet peeve (going far beyond that 95% of the time) is being called a bug or being made fun of because of his size.
History: Issun was originally from the Poncle village of Ponc’tan, where life pretty much centered around training to be the next Celestial Envoy, the voice of the gods. Issun’s grandfather, Ishaku, had been the Celestial Envoy 100 years ago and had aided Shiranui in her fight against Orochi. Upon realizing what a talented artist Issun was, Ishaku began heavily training Issun, meaning to push him to his limits and make him into an even better artist. However, Issun didn’t understand his grandfather’s intentions and became frustrated. He spent a lot of time skipping classes and wandering around Yoshpet, the sacred but very dangerous forest of the Oina tribe. One day he found a young Oina girl, named Kai, wandering Yoshpet close to death. Issun led her out, saving her life, and through this, became good friends with Kai. The two often visited in Wep’keer, Kai’s home village, and Issun befriended the villagers. Ishaku began to get even more angry at how Issun was shirking his duties, and things finally reached a breaking point between them, ending in Issun stealing a painting of a wood sprite, running away from Ponc’tan and running all the way to the main island of Nippon, running as far as Kamiki Village. Upon reaching there, he ended up settling down in the kimono of the wood sprite in question, the spirit of the sacred tree Konohana, known as Sakuya. He rested there until the second coming of Orochi.
It is after that Sakuya awakens Amaterasu from her 100 year sleep that Issun awakes and pops out of Sakuya’s kimono. From there he is introduced to Amaterasu, agrees to tag along with her to revive the spirits of the village, and manages to find out that she has a natural talent for the Celestial Brush techniques Issun has long wished to learn. He decides to stay with her so he can learn the Celestial Brush techniques and steal them for himself, since it’s inevitable that, as Shiranui reborn, Amaterasu would learn all 13 again.
Issun stays with Amaterasu throughout her journey through Nippon, acting as her mouth for the mortals who cannot understand her. It isn’t until they make it to the capital of Sei-an City that Amaterasu finally sees Issun for what he really looks like, thanks to the power of the Lucky Mallet and its ability to shrink things down to fit in the eye of a needle.
Eventually Amaterasu’s travels lead her to Kamui, the land of Issun’s birth. Issun is naturally reluctant to travel there, but he becomes extremely concerned once he sees how strong the snowstorms have become. After it is explained that the Volcanic Incantation is the only thing that could save the village from the snowstorms but that the only one who could recite it has gone missing, Issun continues to stay with Amaterasu. However, when Amaterasu’s travels lead her to Ponc’tan, Issun refuses to enter the village.
After the demons responsible for the snowstorms, Lechku and Nechku, are defeated, the Ark of Yamato rises from Laochi Lake, and Amaterasu realizes that this is the final leg of her journey. Halfway up the rainbow bridge into the Ark, Issun stops Amaterasu and says that this is where they part. He demonstrated Bloom, one of Amaterasu’s celestial brush techniques, and says that he has learned everything he needed to.
At this point, Waka appears and taunts him about his lack of resolve, stating that Issun never had a ticket in the first place, and that the Ark won’t let him on. Issun runs up to the entrance to try to prove Waka wrong, but a forcefield repels him and the rainbow bridge begins to disappear. As Amaterasu fights to keep Issun in her sights, he falls into the frigid lake and watches the door close, trapping Amaterasu and Waka inside.
Issun finally realizes what he has to do, and jumps into overdrive, travelling all across Nippon, giving speeches about the power of the gods and distributing paintings of Amaterasu as he goes, saying that, “We shouldn’t just pray when we want something.” His words and paintings touch the hearts of the people, giving Amaterasu the last influx of faith she needs to regain her true power. This is all she needs to defeat the Lord of Darkness, Yami, and finally, her eons long conflict against him has ended. Without this effort from Issun, Amaterasu would have failed.
As the Ark returned to the Celestial Plain, Issun returned to Kamiki Village and watched it fly off together with Sakuya. As the Ark flew off, Issun stated that he would find his own path to the Celestial Plain someday.
And he did, or so he thinks, anyways. Issun eventually returned to Ponc’tan. His search for knowledge about the Celestial Plain eventually led him back to the Spirit Gate that had once sent him and Amaterasu to Kamiki 100-years in the past in the first place. Issun unsealed the gate, and stepped through, taking him to the Dimensional Island.
Other: Issun's based on the myth of Issun-Boshi, which is about a one-inch tall child who was born to a very, very old couple who wished for a child, no matter how small he was.
