Physical Description
Even if the woman were to dress decently by modern standards, she would stick out in a crowd like a sore thumb. She's very tall for her gender, and would be on the tall end of things for most men in most of her world's eras. Her natural skin tone is actually rather pale, but she spends well over half her time outside so she has a very solid tan. She's also lacking tan lines, even over the areas she is known to wear her "clothes". She has muscular development equivalent to what a male greco-roman wrestler might have.
She has long platinum blond hair. If she were to actually comb the mess more often, it might reach past the base of her shoulder blades. Not only is it naturally curly, but hair care isn't a priority when ranked up against survival in prehistory. Her eyes have a more masculine lean to them than not and even when she's having a good time (which is often) tend to be a bit narrow. They are steel blue bordering on grey in color. She also has slightly accented canines due to the amount of meat in her diet. They're within the ranges of normal and wouldn't draw attention, however.
Ayla wears furs, more or less depending on the weather. Due to a climate shift in her own time, she has begun to dress a little more sanely, but she still shows more skin than most would consider appropriate. Her entire outfit is made of the thick fur of two of the same animal whose pelt was apparently grey with hints of steel blue. The base form of her outfit consists of fur panties and a bra. The bra piece has a long part stitched onto the bottom so that it hangs over her belly button and is more or less straight from there to the back. Lining the bra is leather made from dinosaur hide. Her panties piece has an attachment stitched to the top that hangs down to about her knees. The stitching is concealed on both pieces with a lot of wrapped fur that is something like a thin scarf/shawl number
On her hands she has on fur gloves with the finger tips exposed. There is an extra layer of fur in the form of a "bracer" that comes from her wrists to just below her elbows. She wears boots that come up to just below her knees, the ankles upward having an extra layer like her gloves. She has a very long scarf that seems to be made from several animal tails stitched together. Somehow it doesn't look bad. It wraps around her body at a few points, a bit more just under the breasts. It wraps three times around her neck, covering it entirely, and there is still enough hanging over her left shoulder to reach just past the backs of her ankles. It is the part that looks most like an animal tail.
Of special note, even among people who know her, is her breast size. While she was always a bit above average, they seem to have grown. This is most noticeable from the area you can see the top of her breasts from her bra piece. For those that know Tear from the world known as Auldrant, they now fall just short of that teenager's size. There's a reason for this (see Other).
Weapons
Ayla doesn't carry any weapons on her, nor does the woman generally need to. Being the strongest human of the group that saved their world about just half a year past, she is able to bring down a lot of monsters in her world with one solid (aka critical) hit. Her entire body is in that sense a weapon, although a running gag among her friends is to call her "weapon" a "Bronze Fist".
Abilities/Powers
Born before humans got the boost and knowledge needed to use the limited magic of their land, Ayla has nothing that could be called truly a power. That doesn't mean she is to be taken lightly, but all her "abilities" are natural and are thus better classified as skills. She is able to combine her skills with the magic of allies, but her contribution is a skill, not a power.
Skills
Ayla is a brawler. She is very intuitive as opposed to book learned, but just because she can't talk what would be considered "right" doesn't mean she can't kick your ass six ways from Sunday/Remday. She has some animalistic tendencies, including telling things by smell and being more observant of her surroundings than most. She's good at wilderness survival skills like tracking and hunting.
Ayla also knows how to party like there is no tomorrow, and can hold her liquor rather well. Doesn't mean she won't have a massive hangover the next day, but she doesn't act much more reckless drunk than she does sober. She can also dance rather well, but a lot of people from the modern era of her world might mistake her "dancing" for a weird seizure.
She has a number of battle skills that would be called "special moves" in a fighting game. Those things where you'd have to hit a series of buttons with the right timing. They are not magical in nature, but she can combine them with the magical abilities of allies for some pretty nasty moves. They are listed below as they are predefined.
Kiss - Exactly how this works is unknown, any attempt to get Ayla to answer is met with a topic change at best. Presumably its a form of distraction combined with meditation. Ayla tends to play it up with a flirting pose, but it consists of blowing a kiss at a single ally. It does some very minor curing and snaps the ally out of any "status effect" they might be in. She will often say "Kiss!" as she does it.
Roundillo Kick - Ayla jumps into the air and kicks the enemy, nothing more or less. Its a fancy version of a jump-kick, in other words. Ayla is known for shouting out the name of the skill as she does it, but its not required.
Cat Attack - This skill is why Ayla keeps her fingertips exposed with her attire. She leaps on top of an enemy and claws at them. She is not unknown for biting them as well. She is known for shouting out the name of the skill as she does it, but its not required.
Boulder Toss - Ayla grabs an enemy and chucks them to another part of the battle field. Given the right circumstances, she can harm two enemies by throwing one at another. There is a limit to what she can lift, but its beyond what would be considered normal. She is known for shouting out the name of the skill as she does it, but its not required.
Charm - Ayla pretty much seduces an enemy with her way of moving and a few choice words. Due to her somewhat animalistic nature, she can seduce monsters just as well as humans, if not better. Its rate of success really does depend on who she is dealing with. When successful, they give her some item of theirs. She rarely says the name of this skill unless she thinks it will aid her.
Tail Spin - Named for the way her scarf twirls around her. She leaps into the air and attacks the enemy with a corkscrew-like kick, hitting one opponent and any adjacent to them. She is known for shouting out the name of the skill as she does it, but its not required.
Dino Tail - Ayla moves around the battlefield in a manner comparable to a raptor, allowing her to hit every enemy. Its a bit of a desperation move as the weaker Ayla is, the more damage it does. She is known for shouting out the name of the skill as she does it, but its not required.
Triple Kick - Ayla leaps into the air and delivers three solid kicks to the enemy, using the momentum for each kick to do a bit more harm. She is known for shouting out the name of the skill as she does it, but its not required.
Drill Kick - Ayla can only perform this skill with Crono. Crono begins to spin in a circle to perform his Cyclone technique, and Ayla deftly lands on his shoulders. While the weight difference could be a potential problem, Crono's own ability seems to alleviate that some. Ayla then uses the momentum from the Cyclone to deal extra damage with her Roundillo Kick move.
Thunder Chomp - Ayla can only perform this skill with Crono. Crono casts his Lightning spell and actually hits Ayla with it. Her natural lack of weakness to magic coupled with her innate toughness allows her to channel the electric energy from the spell. She then performs her Cat Attack skill like normal, allowing the voltage flowing through her body to deal extra damage and potentially shock the enemy.
Falcon Strike - Ayla can only perform this skill with Crono. She grabs Crono and tosses him high into the air at a horizontal angle, as if she were performing her Boulder Toss ability. Crono begins his Cleave attack as he shoots forward, and pretty much slices through a line of enemies.
Twin Charm - Ayla can only perform this skill with Marle. Marle uses her Allure skill to confuse and distract the enemy while Ayla uses her Charm skill. In the ensuing distraction, Ayla lifts an item from the opponent. Doesn't have a reduced success rate against opponents only into men, although it tends to work for different reasons.
Ice Toss - Ayla can only perform this skill with Marle. Marle casts her Ice spell and sends the giant chunk of ice towards Ayla. Ayla catches it and lobs it at the enemy as if she were performing Boulder Toss. It provides extra damage in the way of impact.
Iceberg Toss Ayla can only perform this skill with Marle. Marle casts her Ice II spell and sends the absolutely huge chunk of ice towards Ayla. With a bit of effort Ayla is able to catch it and lob it at the enemy as if she were performing Boulder Toss. Basically an upgraded version of Ice Toss.
Flame Kick - Ayla can only perform this skill with Lucca. Lucca casts her Fire spell on Ayla. Due to her natural lack of weakness to magic and an innate toughness, she is able to channel the power of the fire and use it to provide an elemental boost as she performs her Roundillo Kick attack.
Inferno - Ayla can only perform this skill with Lucca. Lucca casts her Fire II spell on Ayla. Due to her natural lack of weakness to magic and an innate toughness, she is able to channel the power of the fire and use it to provide an elemental boost with the fire swirling around her, caught up in the spin as she performs her Tail Spin attack.
Blaze Kick - Ayla can only perform this skill with Lucca. Lucca casts her Fire II spell on Ayla. Due to her natural lack of weakness to magic and an innate toughness, she is able to channel the power of the fire and use it to provide an elemental boost as she performs her Triple Kick attack.
Boogie - Ayla can only perform this skill with Robo. Ayla performs her Charm ability, distracting the opponent from Robo. Robo then uses his Robo Tackle attack to ram into the opponent. The sudden attack from an unexpected source shocks the enemy into being unable to act for a while.
Spin Kick - Ayla can only perform this skill with Robo. Ayla jumps in front of Robo just as he sets off his Robo Tackle attack. She takes the full force of the attack and adds the inertia into her Roundillo Kick attack, causing extra damage.
Beast Toss - Ayla can only perform this skill with Robo. Robo fires off his weapon hand at the enemy with his Rapid Fire Fist attack. Ayla runs to the other side of the opponent and tosses them back into the range of Robo's attack, causing numerous hits and extra damage due to the combined inertia.
Slurp Kiss - Ayla can only perform this skill with Glenn/Frog, and it may take some practice to remaster. Glenn channels healing energy into a whip and uses it to gather his allies (including Ayla) near him. Ayla uses the closer proximity as she performs Kiss. The effect is a slight healing of health and "status effects" being cured.
Bubble Burst - Ayla can only perform this skill with Glenn/Frog. Glenn casts his Water spell, and seals Ayla inside the ensuing bubble. The bubble raises above the enemy thanks to Glenn, and Ayla uses her Roundillo Kick to get out of it, causing extra damage thanks to the water dumped on the enemy.
Dropdown - Ayla can only perform this skill with Glenn/Frog. Glenn leaps into the air with the Masamune pointed downward as if he is performing his Dropdown skill. Ayla pretty much leaps onto his shoulders and jumps off for added height at the apex of his jump, granting extra power to her Triple Kick attack, doing all three kicks before she lands on the ground again.
Final Kick - Ayla can only perform this skill with Crono and Marle. Both Crono and Marle cast the second level versions of their main elemental spells on Ayla. She channels the energy thanks to her natural lack of weakness to magic and innate toughness, using it to boost three kicks on the enemy. She can release one kick for each element and one of her own or combine them all into three kicks.
Gatling Kick - Ayla can only perform this skill with Crono and Lucca. It is almost identical to the Final Kick attack, but instead of channeling Marle's Ice II, she uses Lucca's Fire II. Same basic effect aside from one of the elements used as a power source.
Twister - Ayla can only perform this skill with Crono and Robo. Robo starts his Laser Spin ability, and Crono jumps on top of him as he begins his Cyclone attack. This adds extra momentum and damage. Ayla then uses her own dexterity to Tail Spin on top of the two and add even more momentum. This attack can also be performed with Ayla in the middle, but Robo has to be on the bottom due to weight issues.
3-D Attack - Ayla can only perform this skill with Crono and Glenn/Frog. Glenn snags a single enemy with his whip, preventing escape. Crono disorientates the enemy with Cyclone as well as allowing the enemy to be drawn close enough for the two of them to both attack with their blades. During this, Ayla leaps into the air and brings down three kicks with her Triple Kick ability while the enemy is still disorientated.
Spin Strike - Ayla can only perform this skill with Glenn/Frog and Robo. Also, one of them has to have a magically imbued gem with only the color silver. I honestly don't know on the description, I can't find a video of it.
Poyozo Dance - Ayla can only perform this skill with Marle and Lucca. Also, one of them has to have a magically imbued gem with only the color white. Only the person with the gem on them is able to activate the energy needed for all three to perform the tech. Marle taunts the enemy with her Allure ability, disorientating them. While they are distracted, Lucca uses the opening to use her Hypnowave ability, meaning the tool she uses to do it has to be functional. This causes further confusion to all the enemies on the field, pretty much scrambling their brain and creating illusions. Ayla then takes the opening that grants and Triple Kicks the enemy. The ability is certainly magical in nature, but it doesn't belong to any known element! The enemies who survive are often left very confused and are like as not to attack their own shadows.
Personality
Ayla is... honest. Oh so very painfully honest. She very much lives in the present, often not thinking about things she has done in the past or how her actions could effect the future. She's the type of gal that wants to be directly in the middle of things and she can be fairly abusive at times, but she means well. She doesn't very much understand the concept of personal space. Sometimes she can be a little slow, she's not scholarly by any means, but if she's aware of it she doesn't let it bother her. If she doesn't understand something, she is known for assuming it is a joke.
She's got a fairly simple moral code. Fight, live. Give up, die. She doesn't want to die so she never gives up. She admires people who are strong, and seems to have a small ability to see those that are strong even if they don't recognize it in themselves. She is very stubborn and does nothing half way.
Lately her personality has been a bit more chaotic. On rare occasion she's even cried. She's more easy to enrage and she will throw things at people who piss her off. She will talk your ear off about gender and even species not matter in strength. A lot of her more unstable traits are actually a symptom of her current condition (see Other) and not really part of her personality. A trait she has developed that may not fade is a mother bear tendency...
History
Ayla was born just over nineteen years ago in the era of history known most commonly as "Prehistory" in the small hunting and gathering tribe known as the Ioka Tribe. Her mother died in childbirth and so she was raised mainly by her father. This lead to her interest in more "masculine" things and a dislike of the gathering side of her tribe. She often snuck off when the hunters left the group.
She was considered a bit of a nuisance until one day at about six years of age she saved her father's group from a Reptite attack. The Reptites were anthropomorphic reptiles that had evolved in a similar fashion Ayla and her people had evolved from apes. The attack had been ordered by a young Azala who had recently become the leader of her people. Despite almost wiping out her tribe, Ayla developed a respect for the teenaged Reptite.
After that incident she was welcomed among the hunters and began advocating that people in the tribe should do what they do best. When her father died of a combination of age and injuries, she was not next in line to be the chief of Ioka. However, after seeing who was she decided to kick his ass and became temporary leader. After fending off a few Reptite attacks, she gained the respect of her people.
In the few years following she made quite a few changes in the tribe. She ordered that those who could hunt would hunt and those that could gather would gather. This caused a division among the roles for the first time in history. Many men became gatherers and many women became hunters. A young man a year younger than Ayla by the name of Kino became a gatherer because of this new rule. She also decided that the tribe needed to stop running from the Reptites. Only those who couldn't fight would run. It was thanks to that the traveling tribe became a village known as Ioka.
Ayla was bored with the lack of activity one day when she was eighteen and decided to run off for some fun without telling anyone. It wasn't anything out of the ordinary for her, but what she would encounter that day would be. She encountered a Reptite scouting party and decided to kick their asses, sending over half off them off in a grumpy rage towards a cliff to the west of Ioka Village. She decided to chase after them.
She was running across several clifftops when she heard some human shouts, quickly followed by Reptite screams. She sped up at the sound of battle and found a spiky haired teenager and two others fending off Reptites. They were doing better than most, although no where near as well as she tended to. She chose to observe until it was clear they were in over their heads. She then ran into the area and handed quite a few of the lizard people their heads. It cleared out enough space for the three oddly dressed people to take care of the rest.
After that was handled, she ran up to them and introduced herself. She liked them and made no illusion about it as she complimented how well they fought. She questioned their strange outfits, and when they tried to explain them to her she didn't quite understand, thinking the were telling a joke. She didn't mind, though, and invited them back to Ioka. She had little patience for how long they took, even running back at one point to chew them out.
They asked her about a Dreamstone. She didn't know what they were talking about, so they described it as a red rock. She understood immediately at that, informing them that the red rock was a sign of status among her people and that they had to earn it. She then, and without permission, decided that the group would have a party thrown for them. It was a pretty crazy event, actually.
Well into the night, the red haired teenager who had introduced himself as Crono brought up the Dreamstone again. Ayla laughed about it and said if he really wanted it that bad he still had to earn it. Crono wasn't sure what she meant when she suggesting they have a contest involving "Skull Smash". Crono didn't have to be a genius to realize she was talking about a drinking contest. However, they really needed the rock for their own purposes, and so he agreed to it. He managed to defeat Ayla, and she gave him the rock shortly before passing out. He was quick to follow.
The next afternoon, Crono and his friends burst into her tent saying that an important item had been stolen. She realized quickly it was probably the Reptites and accompanied Crono and one of his friends to chase them down. She and the others found Kino, a seventeen year old from her tribe, sulking in the nearby jungle. After roughly teaching him a few things Ayla told him to go back.
Ayla, Crono, and their third friend worked their way through the jungle until they reached a place where Azala was examining the "Gate Key". Seeing it as the only way to get the item that allowed his friends to time travel back, Crono agreed to tell the truth. Azala didn't even let him continue, claiming no one would speak that easily, and sent her bodyguard Nizbel after them. The three worked together to beat Nizbel into submission and Azala ran off. Back at Ioka, Crono and his friend thanked Ayla for their help and left. Ayla told them they were welcome back any time.
It was a few days later when Ayla found Crono, this odd frog creature, and one of his friends collapsed outside. She dragged them all back to her hut and waited for them to wake up. The first thing out of her mouth was a question over if she could eat the frog, which understandably shook the poor fellow. When they brought up the "blue-haired" one, she jumped to assuming that variety tasted better. The conversation wasn't able to go much further before one of her people burst into the hut saying that the northern woods were on fire.
She ran out in surprise, forcing Crono and his allies to follow her. They found her in the smoldering ruins of the northern forest amongst the people of the Laruba tribe. They were chewing Ayla out for what had happened, saying the Reptites had attacked because of her actions. Ayla became indignant and decided that the fight with the Reptites had to end once and for all. After a bit of pushing, she got permission to use a Dactyl as a steed. Crono realized how insanely reckless Ayla was being and chased after her. He and his friends found her at the top of the cliff where she was summoning the Dactyl. He suggested they fight the Reptites together and Ayla gladly agreed, summoning two more Dactyls for Crono and his friend.
Riding the Dactyls, they reached Azala's fortress. They fought through it until they came upon Azala, who had expected Ayla and set up a sort of trap for her. Ayla, Crono, and their friend fought Azala and her "pet", the Black Tyranno. They defeated Azala just in time for an earthquake to start. To the surprise of Ayla and those with her, what looked to be a giant red star was hurtling towards the earth. Azala informed them that it was the thing that would wipe out the Reptites who had finally lost.
Kino showed up with some Dactyls and insisted Ayla flee the area. Ayla was busy trying to tell Azala it wasn't over. As long as Azala lived, she could fight. This alone showed the level of respect the cave woman had for the Reptite. Azala batted her hand away and told her that she had lost and should be left to die. With insistence from Kino, Crono, and the other, Ayla was finally convinced to get onto the Dactyls. They pulled away from the area just as the "Fire Red" (Lavos being Ayla's language for that) crashed into the fortress.
The group carefully worked their way down a cliff face. Ayla told Kino to go back to Ioka as soon as they landed, so he wasn't with the group. By the time the group reached the bottom, the damage had passed and there was a giant crater where the fortress had once been. Ayla accompanied Crono inside, and Crono commented in surprise on the Gate. This lead to a lot of confusion from Ayla, and he promised they would explain as soon as they went through. There was a chance they could catch Lavos, after all!
They came to an Ice Age like world after passing through the Gate. Ayla was stunned at the way the world had changed, and she finally got that explanation she needed. After realizing what Crono's group was doing, she decided she was going to help. They couldn't have said no if they'd wanted to. It was with that Ayla became an official part of the team.
So Ayla joined Crono and his friends as they hopped between time periods in their efforts to stop the future the group had previously found. When Crono sacrificed his life to save his friends, the wizard Magus joined the group when Frog chose to spare his life. The group would go back to Ayla's time at several points, once to help recharge the Moonstone with the power of the sun.
After the many side adventures Ayla had, three of their group raided the flying palace known as the Black Omen that had risen in 10,000 BCE. From there, those three faced down Lavos who was to destroy the world in 1,999 CE, altering the future ever so slightly. Through some further manipulating of the gates, the princess of 1,000 CE would learn that Ayla was a very distant ancestor. She made a joke about that when Ayla and Kino left, leading to Ayla smacking Kino and comments about stamina.
Ayla and Kino arrived in their time, and they had a lot to do. Ayla retired as chief of her people, insisting that Kino had grown enough to be able to handle it. She remained his adviser. About a month and a half ago, Ayla began having issues with nausea and her breasts began to swell. She knew full well what was going on, especially when a certain time of the month never came around, but it was nothing that she would let slow her down. Together she and Kino helped the people of Ioka, eventually moving them underground due to the drastically changing climate. It even began to snow about a month back.
Kino had been trying to get Ayla to stop being so active after they'd realized her condition. This had actually been met with moderate success and more than a few busted items due to Ayla's violent tendencies with mood swings. She finally badgered the poor man into letting her go hunting one day, something the tribe did need more of due to the climate shift. She was about half a mile out from New Ioka Village when her senses picked up on something odd. Several birds flew out of the trees, for one. She went over to investigate what was going on in time to see a Gate-like rift open up in front of her. It drew her in with unexpected force, sending her to Dimension Island.
Other
If you didn't get the hints, Ayla is pregnant. Her gestation period is longer than normal due to the calender of the Chrono Trigger world, which I've aligned to Auldrant in Tales of the Abyss. The basic meaning I've taken from this is that things take longer to mature. Where as 270 days is the real world gestation period, its about 574 days on Auldrant. This is 75% of the year the way 270 days is to our calender. This means she's roughly in the middle of her first trimester. This explains the breast size change.
Her outfit is different than any of her official arts. This is due to the climate changes brought on by Lavos. This is actually canon to the game, as the Ioka will comment on how its getting colder and food is becoming scarcer. I just advanced it since about six months have passed since the game ended.
