Full Name: Zoe Washburne
Nicknames:[b/] N/A
Age: ~34
Height: 5'10"
Weight: ? (Lean)
Gender: Female
Race: Human
Alliance: Neutral
Home: Serenity (Firefly Class Spaceship)
Franchise: Firefly/Serenity
Physical Description
Zoe is a fairly tall and lightly defined black woman. She has tightly curled dark brown hair, which she keeps at a long height. At the tips it fades towards a lighter brown, and the exact shade of brown seems very dependent on the lighting. She tends to tie her hair just below her air creating messy but functional ponytails. This prevents her hair from getting in her face. She has dark brown eyes.
Her outfits tend to be practical and tough. She favors leather and thick fabrics like heavy duty cargo or jeans. For colors, she is almost never seen out of earthy tones. While her outfits seem tight at times, she dresses in a manner that lets her move well. It is not uncommon to see her sleeves pulled up, but she tends not to be neat enough about it to actually take the effort to roll them up. Her shoes are always practical.
Zoe is usually seen wearing at least one belt, and said belt almost always has a holster for a gun. When actively in a situation considered dangerous, her belt allows a larger gun and also holds spots for spare bullets. One aspect of her outfit that seems to never change is the dark brown leather choker she has around her neck. It has two special meanings to her, which is why she never takes it off.
Weapons
Zoe's weapon of choice is a custom version of a gun from the year 1892 on Earth that Was. It is known as a Mare's Leg, and has a shorter barrel than the standard Winchester Model 1892 it is based upon. The smaller size also allows her to wear it in a large leg holster. Her holster tends to carry spare bullets for it, as well.
She also has a knife on her, but her preference is to use the gun.
Abilities/Powers
Zoe doesn't have any abilities and/or powers. She is simply a normal human.
Skills
Zoe is an excellent marksman. She can use most guns without any teaching, and tends to pick up on how the more exotic varieties work by usage rather than actual lessons. She is also good at things like gun maintenance and can take apart and reassemble quite a few types. While she can use a knife, it isn't so much a skill as a last resort.
Since she was in a war, she is also good at a lot of basic combat abilities. She hides well and is rather good at taking orders. She knows some basic medic skills, although she's not a doctor by any means. She does know enough to potentially save a life.
Zoe also possesses fairly decent leadership qualities, and is able to keep morale going better than most when shit hits the fan. This comes as much from threatening others as not though, so it is perhaps better called a skill with intimidation. She is rather good at keeping her cool in combat situations, as well.
Personality
Zoe seems to be an extremely serious woman, completely lacking in the humor department. She comes across as scary and domineering to a lot of people. This is the most obvious aspect of her personality, and the only side she tends to let a lot of people see. It's true that she tends to be rather stoic and if you get on her bad side she is liable to give you a tongue lashing at best, but that isn't all there is too her.
She actually does have quite the sense of humor, but it tends to be very dry and at times quite morbid. Sometimes it can be hard to realize she is telling a joke if you don't know her well. She is very confident in herself and her abilities, and if she has an opinion on something you can bet she will voice it. She doesn't like showing her softer side to many people, thus encouraging the unforgiving amazon woman image some people get from her.
Zoe is dedicated to the task at hand, whatever that may be. While she is known for voicing her displeasure in a situation, she does what has to be done. She isn't one for useless griping, often only voicing her disagreement with the situation and being done with it. She doesn't open up well, and her loyalty and dedication sometimes make it hard for people to realize she has her own mind separate from the job. She does what has to be done and doesn't apologize for it.
History
Zoe Washburne was born as Zoe Alleyne on a spaceship roughly thirty-four years ago. She spent most of her life on spaceships, and while she didn't really have a planetside home, she would have been best classified as a member of the outer planets. She decided to join the military as soon as she was able, and signed up as a career woman. She was involved in the military when the Alliance, an organization that ran the prosperous inner planets that had sprung up after Earth that Was became destroyed, decided that all the planets needed to come under their central rule.
Things fell as they would, and she ended up on the side of those that were fighting the Unification. During this "Unification War", she met up with a man named Malcolm Reynolds. She fought alongside him during the war and they developed a close (PLATONIC) bond, of the sort you might expect two war buddies to have. She was serving under this Mal during the Battle of Serenity Valley. This battle would end up losing the war for the rebel "browncoats", leading to the unification of the planets as the Alliance had intended.
After this, she remained with Mal. The man didn't want to deal with the Alliance, so he decided to buy a ship to stay out of the grip of their "long arm". He ended up buying a somewhat junky Firefly class starship, a decision Zoe wasn't exactly thrilled with. From there, Mal began building a crew, which eventually lead to consisting of Hoban "Wash" Washburne, Kaywinnit Lee "Kaylee" Frye, and Jayne Cobb. At some point along the ship's history, Zoe managed to fall in love with and marry Wash, despite Mal's objections (to Zoe).
Their standard life of doing jobs both legal and illegal took a shift when Mal decided they needed to take aboard passengers if they were going to keep the ship running, partly a result of (yet another) a job gone bad. On the planet of Persephone he picked up several passengers, the two of particular note being the Shepherd (read as: Priest) Derrial Book and the doctor Simon Tam. This lead to quite a bit of chaos which finally lead to the crew including Book, Simon, and his sister River... at least for the time being.
River was a target for the Alliance, and a lot of what happened next had to deal with keeping River out of Alliance hands. It was about a year or so later that Serenity and Simon and his sister seemed to part ways. This didn't last very long, as things regarding what had been done to River by the Alliance gained a new light. River's ability as a "reader" (read as: psychic) lead to them reaching a planet called Miranda and learning the truth about the mysterious Reavers that terrorized space. Several events relating to this would lead to the deaths of both Book and Wash.
Eventually, the crew of Serenity put out the truth of the Reavers to the world. Despite this, the Alliance was strong enough to deal with it. After a while, everything fell back into more or less normal circumstances. River became the pilot of Serenity in Wash's place, and things settled down. Zoe internalized her feelings about Wash's death, and came to terms with it as well as she could on her own.
At some point, Mal and his crew were offered a job that fell into their oft visited category of less than legal. Said job involved raiding the Alliance facility of a core planet, and would have been laughed off if it weren't for the ludicrous payment being offered for it, which should have probably been a flag in its own right. The group managed to get to the room where the device they were to steal was at, but Jayne managed to get Mal pulled through an odd portal like device. His "public relations" man Jayne managed to get back out, but the group only got away because of River's piloting.
When Jayne reported that Mal was probably dead, there was the first sparks of tension. As first mate, Zoe took command of the ship and got them to where they were supposed to receive the payment. It went rather badly, and that lead to planning the next course of action. She decided they needed to confirm if Mal was dead. This lead to the entire gorram ship getting taken in by the Alliance and the whole crew getting locked up... including River being pulled away elsewhere.
The group managed well enough to get out, and Zoe insisted that they rescue River. She was their pilot, and the only real chance they had of getting away. Simon had to be convinced they would do so, as well, as he made it clear he was leaving the group if they didn't. Jayne was throwing a fit about it, but he managed to get dragged into it as well. Several "complications" later lead to Zoe and Kaylee getting separated from Jayne and Simon.
With no knowledge of what exactly is going on, Zoe and Kaylee manage to get to an exit. Kaylee is worried to the point of panic about Simon, and Zoe realizes that she is going to have to leave her somewhere if she intends on going back to rescue the others. She manages to shove Kaylee out and shout for her to get somewhere safe before the place reaches its final stages of lockdown. Its while Zoe is back in the building that she gets herself cornered in a room with a portal device. She has a good enough head on her shoulders to connect a few things and chooses to go through the active portal... and arrive on Dimension Island.
Other
Everything before the post-Serenity information excluding the necklace is canon. I've chosen to not have Zoe pregnant with Wash's daughter as was originally intended due to not knowing about it and the post-Serenity content already standing. The necklace I've combined two conflicting statements about into one.
