Physical Description
Vincent is white adult male of clearly European descent. His skin is noticably pale. It could ironically be blamed simply on a lack of sunlight, which is the explanation he gives when he is forced to give one. His straight brown hair is on the short end of medium. He keeps his bangs out of his face and his hair has no styling. It covers about three fourths of his neck and doesn't reach his shoulders.
He has brown eyes roughly the same shade as his hair. They are almost impossible to read and as stoic as the rest of his expressions seem to be. If you can manage to get a smile out of him, it will reach them, but it is as slight as his expressions.
Vincent dresses in pants and long sleeves. He tends to wear black boots, but is always seen in solid footwear. He never wears tennis shoes or simple slip-on shoes. He wears plain black leather gloves that seem rather tailored for him. They are well broken in and noticably worn, but they are in remarkable functional condition regardless. His favored colors are black and navy, although he isn't unknown for dark red for a change up.
Weapons
Vincent has a single weapon, and it's a doozy. At first glance, it seems to be an intricate wooden longsword. The pommel and guard are both highly polished silver, with the hilt looking to be pure crystal. It is in fact magically solidified holy water and the reason why Vincent began wearing gloves. On the front and back of the hilt (marked by the guard) extending to the sides a cross is stamped.
The blade itself would be unimpressive if it didn't appear to be made out of highly polished oak (as in the wood). The edges appear as sharp as a highly sharpened steel blade and indeed are. It is also far more indestructable than any normal sword would be. It basically can't be destroyed. It is a holy sword and as such can't be used by any entity unable to use holy items. The hilt functions as holy water and anything weak to it will be effected the same way holy water would effect them. Due to the construct of the blade, it can be used to "stake" vampires... this includes Vincent.
Abilities/Powers
Vincent has all the powers of vampires in his homeworld, with most of the weaknesses and cons associated with vampirism. These are listed in the Other section. The following abilities/powers are things specific to him, including the exceptions to traits of vampires in his world.
He is immune to positive holy symbols no matter how much the believer has faith in them. He is not immune to the negative ones, but whether they are negative or not depends entirely on the mindset of the user. Because many "villains" do not feel they are in the wrong, it relies on them considering the symbol as evil, not as "misunderstood".
The more important ability of his is that he is not default evil. He is as capable of making his own choices about what he does and how he does it as any normal human. He is literally the only vampire in his world that has ever managed to break that aspect of his curse, and in his thousands of years of life has proven to be an anomaly in regards to this.
Skills
Vincent is actually an extremely skilled computer programmer and functions as a work at home tech assistant. He has a college degree for such things, earned through the service of online colleges. It is due to these skills he has set up a false alias for himself. Due to the need to appear in person for certain things, he is also skilled at restarting his life every ten to fifteen years. He doesn't age, and it is a necessity.
He is rather panlingual with languages. His first language is technically that of the middle class in Medieval Europe, but he hasn't had the need to use the language for so long that it is likely he would barely be conversational. His first language these days is modern American English, although he speaks quite a few modern languages. He also knows Latin and all its common variants.
Vincent is skilled in a battle, and after thousands of years of training it is part of his day to day routine. While he hasn't been in a real battle for some years and it would show, it wouldn't take him long to regain it. He is only really skilled with a long sword, and is so used to using his own that he would have to adjust to the balance of a new one. He doesn't know how to fight with a shield and is used to using his own body to take attacks when dealing with a mundane enemy. He is also good at hand to hand combat and disabling his opponents without harming them.
Personality
Vincent is a quiet person with a arctic exterior. He is not overtly rude, he is simply very distant. He doesn't speak much unless it is required of him, and he is almost impossible to befriend. He will treat his allies as valuable comrades on the battlefield, and will protect them as such, but that is a method of practicality not a sign of caring.
However, he is completely pacifistic towards humans. His skill with things such as pressure points and other methods of disabling means he is not defenseless against human beings. He will knock them out. He will defend humans, but he will generally not be torn up if he is unable to save one. If one that he considers a friend rather than an ally were to be in danger, he would fight harder. He tends to internalize any grieving he does, only contributing to his icy exterior. He will have extreme guilt if he is forced to take a human life, but it is impossible to tell with him. When it comes to feeding, he favors rats and in the absence of them other small vermin animals.
He seems often to lack emotion as a result of his attitude. He will speak matter of factly of things such as massacres and it is very hard to tell when he is concerned about something. His voice is not quite a creepy monotone, but he has little if anything in the way of emotional inflection. He doesn't seem to care about life in general.
History
Vincent was born thousands of years ago in the Middle Ages (keep reading!) and in a societal position that allowed him to become a messenger for his kingdom. Vampires were known to exist just like most of the other nasties spoken of in "myth". It was on the even of a potential war that a fifteen year old Vincent was given a message to deliver to prevent said war. Due to an attack by vampires on the road, he never made it. He was bitten and turned and spent the next week or so after rising trying to fight the nature that had befallen him. He failed. The war occurred due to the message never arriving, and Vincent's former kingdom was crushed.
Over the next several hundred years, as the Middle Ages marched on (it'll make sense soon), Vincent earned a reputation. He was put up in comparison with the near legendary Vampire Lords for his ruthlessness. His name was the name whispered to children at night to keep them within their homes. During this time, Vincent managed to catch the attention of and even earn a sort of "friendship" with the second oldest Vampire Lord, a man that had been born in Ancient Egypt by the name of Mkhai.
At some point, some set of situations or another managed to fall just right. A human female that Vincent had been stalking for a few days kept managing to slip away from him. It was pure luck, there was nothing special to her. However, for some reason or another Vincent has never claimed to know, she managed to put a crack in the darkness all vampires were supposed to have. Mkhai took this into his own hands and slayed her for Vincent, and the crack that may have sealed shattered. A fierce fight later and Vincent managed to get away, more in control of his actions and able to make choices then he had been for centuries. One could say he had regained his humanity while still remaining a vampire.
Eventually this unnatural "rebellion" caught the attention of Lucifer, who began to make Vincent as a target. One night the fallen angel managed to corner Vincent and left him with only one option. Treading upon the holy ground of a church. With his enhanced strength, Vincent managed to knock down the heavy wooden doors, and to his surprise found out the sacred ground wasn't harming him. When the panicked reactions of the priest inside knocked over the holy water on Vincent, it burned him as it should. Vincent didn't stop the people inside from fleeing, but he remained there knowing that Lucifer was waiting for him outside. The church had rats, it was all he needed.
The situation caused panic, as no one felt brave enough to burn a church. Eventually they managed to get a message out to the church, and they sent one of their slayer teams lead by one Derek Highcrest. Derek's team got into the church, and it was Derek himself that prevented the final blow on Vincent despite the background connection he had with the vampire. Vincent, during the days before he regained his humanity, had killed Derek's father. It was his desire for revenge that delayed the killing, and it was that delay that allowed the suspicion to nestle in Derek's gut. While the young man was trying to work through the feelings, a series of mistakes let Lucifer manage a way to get the church descrated and attempt to target Vincent. The end result of all it was the destruction of the village and Derek offering Vincent a position on the team.
This didn't go well with the Church, but as time went on they allowed it to pass. Derek was twenty three when a series of adventures lead to the discovery of the fountain of youth. It was a secret maintained by the Church and one that Derek used to extend his lifespan for far longer than was natural. During their adventures they met many entities, some they befriended most they killed. Vincent grew to acknowledge Derek as a close friend, and God grew to acknowlege Vincent as unique, sending the sword he still possesses to him.
Derek fell in love at some point as the world's situation seemed to be changing. The Lords were making some very brave moves lately, and things seemed to be coming to a head. The woman was one Derek managed to save. Vincent tried with as much effort as he could to convince Derek to leave the woman. The curse bore by the Highcrest clan meant that if Derek fathered a child, he would die before the child reached adulthood. The mother would die giving birth to a single son. Derek spouted the many times they'd defied fate and what should be and ignored Vincent. The members of their group saw the schism growing.
The woman became pregnant before the year was out. However, as soon as she found out she left the group. Derek was distraught and went after her. Vincent lead the members of their group (they were unhappy about it) to try and bring Derek back. A series of incidents arranged by the Vampire Lords ended up with Vincent inadvertently causing Derek's death despite managing to seal the Lords. The shock was too great, and he left the group without explanation. The woman carrying Derek's son left as well, and track of her was lost before she could deliver the child.
With the Lords sealed, God chose to take one an action he hadn't in hundreds of years, a direct involvement in the affairs of humans. Within the minds of every human born from that point onwards, history was rewritten. History would be known as it is in our world. Despite the teachings of the parents, the idea of history being thousands of years longer than it actually was became considered so outrageous it was all but lost all together. Vincent remembered due to having been born before then.
He would end up immigrating the the United States in the early 20th century. Life advanced for him as it always had, and he would end up in New York with a job as a work from home computer tech. The sword remained with him. The Lords remained sealed. The stories of the truth of vampires and other such creatures were lost with the truth of history. And that's where he remained.
Other (Vampires in This Setting)
Vampires are perhaps best described as a sort of demon. They were created by Lucifer at the dawn of civilization and spread from there. Vampires are undead, possessing no pulse. They have accented canines that are within the outer ranges of the human norm. This did create some suspicion that a normal person was a vampire when they were still known to be real, but holy water and ground made it easy enough to prove. Vampires are pale, but for most it simply seems as if they do not get enough sun.
The weakness of vampires are pretty classical to what is known as the modern weaknesses. Sacred symbols can burn or restrain vampires. This goes for unholy symbols as well, even those considered as such, but only if their proported powers include the suppression or harm of evil creatures. No matter what the symbol, the wielder must believe in its power. The beliefs of the vampire are not important. The stronger the faith of the wielder, the more power the symbol has. True athiests get no advantage from sacred symbols. It should be noted that protective circles and the like are also effective, but only if the person who cast them believes in them. If the person within has a strong lack of belief in them, this effects their usefulness.
Vampires are severely allergic to garlic in the human sense of allergies. They can not be killed by it, but they can be knocked unconscious and unable to act if forced to eat it, creating a false death via anaphalectic shock. Vampires can not eat most human foods, as it tends to turn to ash in their mouth. Garlic does not, and the effect from eating it only lasts for a temporary time frame. As for where the food goes, it disintegrates within their systems.
Holy water works upon vampires even if the user does not have faith in it. All that is required is that it has been blessed and consecrated properly by someone who does. It and garlic are the two best "wards" for non-believers. Holy water effects your standard vampire as acid would. Submerging them in it would kill most within minutes.
The standard methods of killing a vampire are a stake through the heart or a decapitation. These both work on all but the Vampire Lords, whose special powers are not listed here. One is also able to kill a vampire via minutes of submersion in holy water. Putting them out in the sunlight is another reliable method to kill them, but older vampires can fully cover themselves in a color that reflects the light. Any skin exposed would burst into flame and most consider it unworth the risk.
All of these weaknesses are less effective the older a vampire gets and more effective the younger they are. The age is figured by how long they have been a vampire, not how old they were when they were turned. Vampirism in this world has the unique factor of aging people at a rate of one year per year forwards or backwards towards whatever age they would have been in the prime of their life. As a result, any vampire past a certain age appears to be in their twenties. Unless killed, vampires are immortal.
When it comes to turning humans to vampires, blood must be drained from a major artery (wrist and neck being favored for ease of access) just past the point of death. Any more or any less won't turn, but any less will inflict a severe illness known as a Vampire Fever. This illness is guaranteed to kill unless the victim is treated intensively for three days with a regiment of holy items such as holy water. This treatment is intense in pain, of a sort most humans can't even imagine. The pain itself causes the risk of death, but no treatment guarantees it. It is also quite painful even without the treatment, but not as painful as the treatment is. Many beg to be killed before it can run its deadly course.
When a human (only humans can be turned) is properly infected (by accident or otherwise), they remain dead and rise on their third night. The only way to prevent the turning is to kill the person the way you would a vampire or by burning the corpse. It does not have to be burned to ashes, a mere funeral pyre will do the trick. Many slaying groups consider this the standard method of dealing with someone killed on the field merely as a safety precaution.
After the victim raises, they have not fully succumbed to the evil nature all vampires have. The known record for fighting the urges is two weeks, where the victim gets progressively weaker similar to as if they were starving to death. Their first victim will always push them past the point of no return. While the way Lucifer has set up the curse means all vampires are evil, the evil can manifest in any number of ways. It does tend to grow from the personality of the person previously, so a virtuous individual is likely to be more merciful in their killing acts, rarely turning victims and granting swift death.
Vampires are far stronger and swifter than normal humans. They heal at a highly accelerated rate, with vampires who have lived past their natural healthy life span (varies as in humans) able to heal your average wound in around three seconds. Wounds caused by things such as holy water take double the time to heal similar damage of non holy origins would take, so a simple scratch would take around six seconds.
Vampires have a limit of three days between feeding. They can live on a low quantity diet, but for maximum abilities they need to drain as much blood as a human carries every three days. If a vampire does not feed for three days, they are weakened and begin to skirt a reaction known as "The Hunger". At the end of the third day they are more irritable and likely to attack with the slightest provocation, even if they fight it. They can last no longer than two weeks before they end up in a berserker rage. Their eyes will turn to red and they will kill anything with blood coursing through its veins until they reach the amount of blood double what would put them at maximum effiency for the days they have missed. This means that any vampire who has gone the full two weeks has to drink the blood of approximately five fully grown adult humans. While in The Hunger, vampires pre-existing advantages go through the roof, a result of the berserker "rage". They heal nearly four times as fast, as well as having enhanced strength and speed. Vampires in this state ignore potential dangers and are not in their right mind.
Other
Not explaining how he got to the Island, I will decide that for his intro. Vincent is an OC I have had since I was 13 and is probably my most treasured.
I have no images of him. If you wish to draw him contact me first as I want to give you far more detailed instructions. He is very close to my heart.
