Full Name: Klonoa
Titles: Dream Traveler, Klonoa of the Wind, “Strange Dream”
Age: n/a
Height: n/a (about three feet)
Weight: n/a
Gender: Male
Race: n/a (“Long Eared Cat”)
Alliance: Good
Home: Breezegale, Phantomile
Franchise: Klonoa (Door to Phantomile (PSX version) and Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil canon)
Physical Description: Klonoa is a catlike, rabbitlike being whose species is easily up to debate. He has rather distinct long, rabbitlike ears that hang down past his knees. Most of his body is covered in short black fur, save his face, hands, feet, and the tufts of fur at the ends of his ears and tail. His eyes are yellow and have catlike slits for pupils.
No matter what outfit he’s in, Klonoa is always wearing a particular blue cap with a Pac-Man logo on the side. It is very rare for him to remove this cap, and if he actually had hair, he’d probably have really bad hat hair by now.
He usually wears a blue short-sleeved shirt that zips up in the front and shorts of a slightly darker blue shade. The shorts have yellow buttons on them, though it’s hard to tell what purpose they’re there for. He also wears yellow gloves on his hands and red tennis shoes.
Weapons: Klonoa’s weapon is referred to only as the Ring, and is literally a large ring with a green gem set into it, much like a ring someone would wear. The Ring is large enough that Klonoa could easily fit his whole arm into it should he need to. The Ring is capable of channeling the wind and using it as a weapon. However, the Ring requires some sort of spirit inhabiting it in order to be properly used, as it cannot fire Wind Bullets without some kind of spirit in the bullets themselves. The spirit is always some sort of sentient being with the right abilities to channel the energies needed to fire a Wind Bullet. The main purpose of Wind Bullets as Klonoa uses them is to inflate enemies and use them as a more solid weapon. He can also pick up large objects this way. He can also use Wind Bullets directly as a weapon, but he can only fire one at a time, and has to wait for the spirit in the bullet to return to the Ring to fire another one.
Abilities/Powers: Klonoa is capable of travelling between worlds, usually through his dreams, though when he is pulled to a world, it’s typically not of his own choice. In the worlds he is pulled to, the state of dreams is always in danger, and he always returns to his own world once things are righted. He has no choice in the matter of returning, either; should he choose to try to stay in the world he was sent to, he will be forcefully sucked up by a dimensional warp due to being nothing but a “strange dream” in that world.
Skills: Klonoa is capable of flapping his long ears in the air to help him make some longer jumps.
However, as a non-skill, Klonoa can’t swim. He will sink like a stone.
Personality: Klonoa’s a bit like your average Shonen hero. He’s good hearted and innocent, with a bit of naiveté thrown in. He’s easily able to befriend others and doesn’t often show sadness, with it taking a rather major event for him to break down in any sort of way. He’s a bit of a determinator, and is willing to go against all odds to make sure justice is served.
History: No one’s really sure what happened in Klonoa’s life before he found the Ring. He lived in Breezegale, a town that was the only remnant of a long forgotten Wind Kingdom. One day, he just found a strange Ring out in the woods. Even after finding the Ring and learning how to use it, nothing happened to Klonoa in this world. One thing that he always ended up doing in this world was musing on the nature of dreams, and why he can’t ever remember them.
Sometime later, Klonoa got pulled to another Phantomile through his dreams. It’s unknown if he had any other travels to other worlds before this, due to actions by the Prince of the Moon Kingdom, Huepow. For the most part, the reasons for Klonoa’s arrival boiled down to the machinations of Ghadius, a dark spirit who had recently awakened and intended on trapping the whole of Phantomile in an eternal nightmare by awakening the imprisoned being of nightmares, Nahatomb. It was eventually decided by the rulers of the Moon Kingdom, a hidden and mystical kingdom in Phantomile where the dream energy from forgotten dreams is stored, that they would bring the fabled Dream Traveler to their world to stop Ghadius. Upon his arrival, Klonoa’s memories were wiped and replaced by fake memories of Huepow, who took the form of a sprite in order to fool Klonoa and better use the Ring’s powers. As far as Klonoa knew, he had been living with Huepow and “Grandpa” (really, the elder of Breezegale who agreed to go along with the deceit for the sake of Phantomile) his whole life.
One night, Klonoa had a prophetic dream of a strange ship crashing into Bell Hill. The next morning, he awoke to just that. He and Huepow headed to Bell Hill, passing through a tower owned by another Breezegalian named Balue who was obsessed with a diva from the Moon Kingdom named Lephise and was building the tower so he could visit her at the Moon Kingdom.
At the top of Bell Hill, Klonoa found Ghadius and his right hand lackey Joka talking. It turned out that the ship belonged to Lephise, who had crashed into Bell Hill in her attempts to escape Ghadius. However, upon searching Lephise, it is found that her pendant is missing. Ghadius realizes that someone is eavesdropping on him and Joka and leaves Joka to take care of Klonoa and Huepow. After finishing off the monster Joka summoned, Klonoa finds a pendant inside the giant bell on Bell Hill. He takes it to Grandpa, who tells him it’s in the shape of the crest of the Moon Kingdom, and then to ask Granny of Forlock Village about it.
Klonoa and Huepow manage to finally make their way to Granny after returning the flow of water to Forlock after breaking a spell that had been cast on Jugpot’s king, Seadoph. They find her captured by Joka. After defeating Joka, Granny explains the pendant’s purpose to Klonoa: it’s the key to open the path to the Moon Kingdom. Klonoa inadvertently reveals Grandpa has the pendant, and Joka flies off to Breezegale. Klonoa doesn’t make it back in time to stop Joka from killing Grandpa and taking the pendant. With the aid of Pamela, a magical fish from Jugpot, Klonoa makes his way to the Temple of the Sun. He manages to make it to the top and defeat Joka just before the Temple summons the Moon Kingdom to the world. With Pamela’s aid, Klonoa flies to the Moon Kingdom.
Upon arrival at the Moon Kingdom, Klonoa notices Huepow is acting oddly. However, he doesn’t question further, and makes his way through the massive castle. Eventually, Klonoa runs into some inhabitants of the Moon Kingdom… in the form of the Queen, Huepow’s mother. Huepow is informed of the fact that Ghadius has taken over the Kingdom and is feeding nightmare energy into an egg Lephise is trapped in. Huepow takes his true form and finally tells Klonoa about being the prince of the Moon Kingdom. Huepow returns to his ring spirit form and continues on with Klonoa to the top of the castle. They find Ghadius in the process of summoning Nahatomb. Klonoa manages to defeat Ghadius, and Pamela and Karal come to the top of the castle, carrying Balue, Seadoph, Granny, and Moire. It ended up being not as over as they had thought, as Ghadius, with his dying breaths, gives his nightmare to Nahatomb, allowing the monster to manifest. With the aid of the Moon Cannons and one final attack by Huepow, Klonoa manages to defeat Nahatomb and free Lephise.
Klonoa and Huepow returned to Breezegale, and Huepow finally revealed the truth about Klonoa to him. Klonoa couldn’t believe it, but Huepow only continued to explain what he’d hidden from Klonoa, and that when Lephise sang her Song of Rebirth, Klonoa wouldn’t be able to stay in their world. Lephise began to sing her song just as Klonoa said he didn’t want to go, and a warp opened behind him, forcibly pulling him out of the world.
Klonoa woke up from his dream then, and realized everything Huepow had said was true, because he could remember everything now. He went through a depression after that, and it was a while before he managed to pull himself fully out of it. In fact, it took him being pulled away to another world through his dreams before he finally got over it.
Klonoa arrived in Lunatea through quite likely his least favorite method ever: the Sea of Tears. He was rescued from the water by a priestess-in-training with a lion tail named Lolo and her companion Popka. Lolo becomes Klonoa’s ring spirit, and the two of them travel to the Spirit Bell on another island in the Sea so Lolo can ring it and complete her priestess training. After Lolo rings the bell, the two of them travel to Baguji’s island, where they are told of the situation with Lunatea and the mysterious 5th Bell that is soon to appear. From there, Klonoa, Lolo, and Popka travel to La-Lakoosha where Lolo is made a priestess by the High Priestess and is told to collect the essences from the four bells around Lunatea. On the way to the Bell of Tranquility, Klonoa encounters Leorina and Tat, a pair of sky pirates. Leorina summons a monster to occupy Klonoa’s time and collect data on the Ring, and then leaves. Klonoa rings the Bell of Tranquility and collects the essence from it, but not before hearing a mysterious voice ask him to help it.
From there, Klonoa, Lolo, and Popka travelled around Lunatea, collecting essences. Leorina manages to collect enough data to make her own Ring at one point, and uses it to collect the essence of Discord from Volk. While travelling through Mira-Mira on their way to the Bell of Indecision, Lolo is forced to face the fact she hadn’t gotten anywhere with her own power, and ends up refusing to help Klonoa when he fights a monster to be worthy to ring the Bell of Indecision. Popka gives Lolo a lecture that snaps her out of it, and she eventually runs down to help Klonoa. They defeat the monster, and go to Baguji. Unfortunately, Baguji turns out to be Tat in disguise, and Tat steals the three essences they had. The statue of Claire the Ancient in the Sea of Tears breaks apart to reveal the 5th bell, and the three run to the Sea of Tears to stop Leorina from summoning the Kingdom of Sorrow by ringing the 5th bell. They fail, and the Sea of Tears drains away, revealing a portal to the Kingdom of Sorrow.
Klonoa manages to make it to the flying Ishra’s Ark, where Leorina awaits. Just as Leorina resolves to fight him with her own Ring, the power of the four essences overcomes her, and she transforms into a giant monster against her will. Klonoa defeats the monster, and Leorina returns to her humanoid form, albeit very badly injured. She realizes the error of her actions and resolves to help Klonoa stop the Kingdom of Sorrow from returning to Lunatea by helping him stop the Ark.
They eventually end up in the alternate dimension where Hyuponia, the Kingdom of Sorrow, resided, and find it an empty and desolate city, populated only by Moos and other such creatures. Klonoa climbed to the top of the city, where he found the King of Sorrow… a lonely and sorrowful being who only wanted the people of Lunatea to accept Sorrow. He sent the 5th Bell to Lunatea so he could lift the veil the people of Lunatea had placed over themselves. Klonoa defeats the King in battle, but not before promising to lift Lunatea’s Veil. Klonoa rings the bell in the top of castle, and the King fades away as Hyuponia appears in Lunatea as an island in the middle of the Sea of Tears. Leorina dedicates herself to rebuilding the kingdom, giving up her criminal enterprises for the most part.
The time soon came for Klonoa to go. He and Lolo shared one last tender moment before the warp Klonoa had been waiting for appeared. This time, he passed through the warp willingly, and returned to his own world.
Soon enough, the time came again for Klonoa to travel to another world. And this time, he was pulled to the Dimensional Island… though for what reason, no one’s quite sure yet.
Other: Okay, so after a discussion about canon, me and Gantz decided we’re both signing up Klonoas. The way we decided to handle it is that the console games (Door to Phantomile and Lunatea’s Veil) are the main canon, while the GBA games (Empire of Dreams, Dream Champ Tournament, and Klonoa Heroes: Densetsu no Star Medal) are their own canon (I have no idea where Moonlight Museum would fit in here; Wikipedia says it’s Pre-DtP, but I haven’t played it, so I couldn’t use it as canon anyways). The Klonoa I’m signing up is the one from the main canon, while the one Gantz is signing up is from the GBA canon. As such, they’re AUs of each other.
As far as the Ring Spirit issue goes, that’ll be handled once Klonoa appears on the Island.
