Sanae is very idealistic. Normally a typical Otaku (save for the divine powers), she can get very... "devoted" to something that she's excited about.
History
Sanae was born and raised in a rural area in Japan. Becoming the Shrine Maiden for the Moriya Shrine at Fourteen years of age, Sanae was seen as a Goddess in the flesh because of her powers. As time went on, Kanako began to become concerned about her existence. People were starting to lose faith in her, which put her at risk of disappearing. Taking action, Kanako, Suwako, and Sanae moved the shrine to Gensokyo, hoping that at least the Youkai would put faith in Kanako and keep her from disappearing.
Things went well for them for a while, but they ended up making a very big mistake. They gave Reimu an ultimatum: step down or get the Hakurei Shrine demolished. ...Needless to say, Reimu would have none of that. Dragging Marisa and Michael along, Reimu smacked down Kanako after Marisa beat Sanae. Michael took on Suwako afterward, though by then, the Incident had already been resolved.
The Moriya Shrine crew ceased their overt operations for a time, but Kanako intended to create an Industrial Revolution in Gensokyo. Traveling to the Palace of the Earth Spirits, Kanako gave the corpse of the Yatagarasu to a Hell Raven by the name of Utsuho. They left Utsuho to her own devices after that. After that Incident was resolved, Marisa, partnered with Alice, came to the Moriya Shrine. Sanae decided to have another round against her, but lost.
Eventually, a large flying ship appeared in the skies above Gensokyo. At Kanako's behest, Sanae went to investigate while practicing Youkai Hunting (Yes, this Sanae is Sanae A), joining up with Reimu, Marisa, and Michael. After Michael took on Byakuren and won, Sanae continued to investigate, ultimately taking on Nue and winning.
Shortly afterward, she investigated a large mysterious figure, which was discovered to be one of Suwako's experiments, a giant robot known as Hisoutensoku.
When Kanako found out about the Dimensional Island, she asked Sanae to go investigate, train herself, and see if she couldn't drum up some more followers and faith. Using their power, Kanako and Suwako used a weaker point of dimensional integrity (where Yukari gapped Marisa, Alice, and Michael) to send Sanae to the Dimensional Island. Who can say what will happen to her there?

(As stated above, Sanae is like Sanae A from Undefined Fantastic Object, i.e. somewhat obsessive about her duties to Kanako and not bothered by pummelling Youkai.
