Full Name: Atsuro Kihara
Nicknames: Otakuro (by Yuzu), Nerdlinger (by Kaido), Captain of the Royal Guard
Age: 17
Height: ?
Weight: ?
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Alliance: Neutral Good, leaning toward Chaotic Good
Home: Tokyo, Japan (original home; now lives in the Demon Realm with Abel)
Franchise: Devil Survivor
Physical Description: Atsuro is an average sized Japanese teenager with short brown hair and dark brown, almost black eyes. He typically wears a white hat that actually has the on/off symbol (for most electronics) embroidered in bright green so that it looks like it’s glowing. When the lockdown hit, Atsuro had been wearing a blue zip-up short-sleeved shirt shirt, grey pants, and red shoes. Attached to a white watch on his left wrist is a long USB cord, which he keeps attached to the front of his shirt. He also wears a blue wristband on his right wrist. Typically, Atsuro carries around his laptop in an orange shoulder bag. The laptop stopped working because of the Lockdown, but he still keeps it around.
Weapons: Atsuro’s sole weapon of sorts is his Communication Player, or COMP for short. This COMP was a specifically modified one programmed by Cain, and its most notable function is the ability to summon demons contracted by Atsuro, though with Abel practically being the summoning server now, what with the level of control he has over it, “contracted by Atsuro” now pretty much equals “any demon Abel says listens to Atsuro”. The other very important function is the Harmonizer, which puts Atsuro on an equal level with other demons, and allows him to fight with them. The COMP has various other functions, such as a mail function that comes standard with them, and a function that allows Atsuro to “crack” and use spells other demons used.
Abilities/Powers: Any “powers” are just spells activated by Atsuro’s COMP; as a normal human, he doesn’t have any actual powers.
Skills: Atsuro is a fairly good (at the very least) programmer. While he’s not as good as his “mentor”, Naoya, he can still hack into things if he works at it, and can program more than a few things. Once the war started, these skills became mostly useless, though.
He’s also picked up some knowledge of the demonic tongue from the time he’s spent in the Demon Realm, though his speaking skills with it aren’t all that good.
Personality: The most notable part of personality compared to the four people he spends most of his time around is that Atsuro is actually not typically as depressed as he probably should be. Maybe because that’s just the kind of person he is, or maybe because he’s just trying to keep the group’s spirits up, but Atsuro tries to keep his own spirits up. Though these days, he doesn’t have much of his same happy expression as he did when K1 was still K1 and not Abel.
Atsuro’s pretty loyal to his friends, as well. It’s the whole reason he stuck with K1 and tried to save Keisuke. As such, he’ll try to protect them if possible.
He’s also a little obsessive at times. There’s a reason Yuzu would tease him with the name of “Otakuro”, and it’s not just because he fits much of the typical geek stereotype in Japan (though that has a lot to do with it).
…And there’s more but this is a bit rushed, so ThisTroper RPer will leave it here for now.
History: Atsuro spent much of his early life online. His parents were never home, because they worked overseas in Silicon Valley, so much of his time was spent online. He never did go out much, and most of his friends were people he met online. It was through the internet that he met two people who would prove to be rather important years later when the Lockdown started: a person who went by the handle of 10-BIT and someone by the name of Naoya Kimura.
10-BIT was a man who Atsuro had become good friends with online, to the point that they even had a couple of offline meetings. And then, one day, 10-BIT just vanished. Before vanishing, 10-BIT sent Atsuro a PM saying he’d discovered an incredible cover-up and would contact him if he found anything more out. Eventually, Atsuro began to get worried about 10-BIT and found out that his family had gotten worried enough to call the police. 10-BIT had disappeared somewhere, and no one had any clue where he’d gone.
Naoya, on the other hand, was a genius well known in the programming community. Atsuro met him via a programming forum, and almost couldn’t believe he was talking to the Naoya. They talked for a bit, and Naoya arranged an offline meeting between the two of them. What Atsuro hadn’t expected was for Naoya to bring along his cousin, who was about the same age as Atsuro was. It turned out this Keiichi went to the same school as Atsuro did, too. Somehow or another, Atsuro became friends with Keiichi (who started insisting that Atsuro call him “K1” instead of Keiichi), who also introduced Atsuro to Yuzu Tanikawa, a childhood friend of K1’s. Atsuro and K1 were basically best friends all through school. Atsuro often got into trouble due to K1’s tendency to not think a lot of things through before going through with them. Atsuro, on the other hand, often dragged K1 along on various “nerdy” persuits, usually involving the part of Tokyo known as Akihabara (an area known for its electronics and otaku-related pursuits, such as maid cafes). Yuzu tended to get dragged along as well, but her activities often weren’t as odd and/or embarrassing as the ones K1 and Atsuro tended to do.
And then, in the summer of their second year in high school, things went to crap. Atsuro hadn’t seen K1 all summer, though apparently K1 had been staying with Naoya for a while that summer. Then, one day, Naoya suddenly called them out to meet with him for some reason, but it ended up turning out that Naoya couldn’t meet them. Naoya had instead given Yuzu three COMPs. Three homebrewed COMPs with most of their functions locked. K1 encouraged Atsuro to go ahead and hack into them and find out what Naoya had hidden within after the group received an unsettling email called a Laplace Mail which predicted the future, and while Atsuro went ahead and got to work on the COMPs, K1 and Yuzu wandered around town. While trying to hack them, Atsuro discovered that the three COMPs had to be together in order for the functions to all unlock, and called K1 and Yuzu, asking them to come to where he was waiting for them. He finally unlocked all of the functions on the COMPs. What Atsuro hadn’t expected was the COMP to suddenly load another program the moment they switched on after the other functions were unlocked. And then, three monsters, a Pixie, a Kobold, and a Kabuso, appeared from the COMPs. Atsuro attacked them back in self-defense, and was surprised when not only did the “monsters’” attacks not kill him, but he was able to defeat one himself. It was after this that Atsuro, K1, and Yuzu realized why Naoya had wanted them to have these particular COMPs as Tokyo experienced a blackout later that night and was subsequently locked down.
The events of the next few days were turbulent. Upon the first day of the Lockdown, Atsuro and friends discovered that the military had locked down a large part of Tokyo and weren’t planning on letting anyone out of the Yamanote Circle, claiming that it was due to poisonous gas, but really it was due to the demons that had appeared within Tokyo the previous day. During this time, Atsuro met an old friend of his from middle school named Keisuke Takagi, who for some reason since middle school had become meeker than he once was. Sometime after that, Atsuro caught a glimpse of what appeared to be 10-bit.
Through a function called the Death Clock and the Laplace Mails of the COMPs, Atsuro, K1, and Yuzu discovered that they were going to die on the third day of the lockdown thanks to a demon named Beldr. At around the same time, Midori Komaki, a cosplayer and camgirl Keisuke had been trying to protect, had obtained a COMP of her own and was using it to try to protect people, but instead was making people mistrust her. Because of this, Keisuke had joined up with K1’s group in order to possibly protect Midori.
The third day of the Lockdown came, and while looking for a way to defeat the supposedly immortal demon Beldr, Atsuro saw 10-BIT again, but this time after a group of demons had attacked several people at a shrine. 10-BIT had been mortally wounded, but before he died, he managed to tell Atsuro that all of the info he had found out was inside a COMP, which he gave to him. Atsuro didn’t have much time to grieve, as the four of them still had to find a way to defeat Beldr. The four eventually found it in a wooden cell phone strap made with “devil’s fuge”; Mistletoe. K1 was given the devil’s fuge to wield into battle, and the time came that Beldr would officially revive. If they didn’t kill him now, the four of them would be among the three-hundred dead from Beldr’s rampage upon those trapped within the Lockdown. K1 managed to kill Beldr using the devil’s fuge, but at the moment K1 killed Beldr, something strange happened. Beldr’s body exploded into energy, which was then absorbed by K1. None of the members of the group knew what had just happened, but Atsuro and Yuzu could both somehow tell that something had happened to their friend. (Keisuke, since he hadn’t known K1 for anywhere near as long, didn’t notice any changes in him). After defeating Beldr, the four learned that because they had killed Beldr, K1 was now forced into participating in a war for the Throne of Bel.
The next day, things started really going bad. It started off with the Laplace Mail that morning predicting that Midori would be killed by a group of humans. Keisuke, to put it simply, did not take that knowledge well, and left the group after flying into a rage Atsuro had rarely seen in him, especially since meeting Keisuke again after the Lockdown started. A few hours later, while rescuing Midori from the humans who were going to kill her, Keisuke appeared, and summoned a demon known as Yama using only the force of his will. None of the humans that were trying to kill Midori were killed, but this began a long line of killings Keisuke would perform in order to judge the people of the Lockdown and protect demon tamers. These killings would eventually attract the attention of Tadashi Nikaido, also known as Kaido, the leader of a gang named the Shibuya Daemons, who would eventually have a few of their members killed by Keisuke. Kaido decided to hunt Keisuke down himself as revenge. Atsuro and Midori (who had joined K1’s group after K1 finally convinced her that she wasn’t helping people, she was only making things worse) tried to convince Keisuke to stop, but nothing seemed to work. And then, a day later, Keisuke was tracked down by Kaido and killed after a battle between Yama and Pazuzu, a demon who, like Yama, had been summoned by Kaido’s will. K1’s group appeared on the scene just as Keisuke’s charred body was being thrown to the side. K1, Atsuro, Yuzu, and Midori retaliated by defeating all of the demons Kaido had summoned, and K1 ended up killing Pazuzu.
Atsuro and Midori didn’t have much time to grieve for Keisuke, though, because soon after that, Atsuro figured out the password to 10-BIT’s COMP with some help from K1. The knowledge inside was about Japan’s PSE laws, laws regulating the sale of electronics. It turned out that every PSE approved electronic had a special chip inside it that would set off a special electromagnetic field at the push of a button. This field, when combined with those of several other electronics, would basically turn Tokyo into a giant microwave. This was the government’s final option in order to take care of the demons and the COMPs that could summon them all at once. If the lockdown was not lifted soon, everyone within the Yamanote Circle would die.
The next day, K1’s group defeated Belial as planned. Once again, K1 absorbed Belial’s energy, and it was at this point that Atsuro really began to notice things. He doubted Yuzu had noticed things, but K1 was his best friend; he was able to tell something was odd about him. He couldn’t put his finger on it, but he had noticed something. That night, Naoya sent K1 an email calling K1 to join him. Earlier, Naoya had explained how it was God’s fault that the Lockdown was happening and that even if the Lockdown was lifted, God’s trials would continue. And K1 had eaten practically every word of it. Atsuro knew K1 trusted Naoya a lot. And while Atsuro didn’t really like Naoya’s plans, or the fact that Kaido was working with him, the plans Atsuro himself had been making had been pretty much destroyed by Keisuke’s death. Just the way Keisuke had died made Atsuro rethink a lot of what he had been thinking of doing. And Atsuro had decided that he was going to stick with K1 no matter what K1 decided to do on the last day of the lockdown. Good thing he had, too, because when K1 said that he was going to join up with Naoya, both Yuzu and Midori had left him. K1 really hadn’t minded Midori too much, but Yuzu leaving had crushed him.
The seventh and final day of the lockdown came. The day consisted of, not in this particular order, Mari Mochizuki, Atsuro’s old tutor, joining the four of them; K1 knocking out Amane, the Shomonkai’s maiden; K1 defeating a Bel demon housed within Amane’s soul, the now group of five killing the three demons keeping a portal to the demon realm from opening above Tokyo, Naoya negotiating for more time in the lockdown (which had been shortened from its deadline of 18:00 to 12:00), and K1 defeating another Bel demon. It was after K1 defeated Belzaboul, a fly-like demon who liked putting his spawn in people, that things started getting weird. Two high powered angels and their underlings appeared and started attacking K1 and Naoya. While this in itself wasn’t too weird, especially considering what they were trying to do, what was weird were the names that the angels kept calling K1 and Naoya. Several times they called Naoya by the name of “Cain”, a name Atsuro knew he had heard somewhere, he just couldn’t remember where, and they called K1 by the name of “Abel” more than a couple times. Naoya appeared to know what they were talking about, but K1 didn’t appear to have a clue. After the two angels were defeated, Naoya had pulled K1 away for a few minutes. Five minutes, to be exact. Kaido eventually got tired of waiting for Naoya to finish up with whatever he had been doing and went to check on them, and thus he was the first to have his mind broken by what had shown up where Naoya and K1 had gone off to. During those five minutes K1 and Naoya had been gone, an almost identical twin of K1’s had shown up. Almost because his entire body was riddled with horrid scars K1 didn’t have. And something had obviously gone on with K1 too, because he seemed different somehow, the same way he had after defeating the Bel demons previously. After a quick introduction of the mysterious twin none of them knew anything about, whose name was Keiji Kurosawa, or K2 for short, Naoya ushered the six of them up the stairs to the top of the Hills building, where K1 would defeat Belberith and summon Babel. Belberith was defeated, and once again, Atsuro noticed something unsettling. Except this time the change was even more noticeable. Because there was something almost lifeless about K1’s eyes now. After that, K1 summoned Babel, and the group was taken within the summoning server itself to fight Babel. The battle went normally even as Babel began summoning the Bel demons K1 had fought before, until after K1 defeated Belberith. Atsuro had expected Belberith to be the last. Instead, a Bel demon Atsuro had never seen before appeared, and K1 flew into a demonic rage at the very sight of the demon, Belphegor. Keiji had managed to get K1 to stop, but not before K1 beat the shell of a demon to a bloody pulp. And for the first time, but not the last, Atsuro was actually afraid of K1. Something had happened to his friend and he didn’t know what.
After Belphegor was dead, K1 defeated Babel, and at that moment, what remaining K1 on the surface was lost, and Abel took hold. Abel was now the King of Bel and thus King of the demons. The Lockdown was easily lifted after this, and Abel eventually took his armies to the Demon Realm after leading the very few of them left (several of them were slaughtered during the march out of the city by the King of Bel himself) out of the city. Abel spent the next month or so showing his dominance to the demons of the Demon Realm.
The first full moon in the Demon Realm had been surprising to say the least, and it was the group’s first glimpse of what a fully demonic Abel would be like. Atsuro figured out pretty quickly that it was Seth (the name that Keiji had taken shortly after K1 had become King of Bel and taken the name of Abel) who kept whatever humanity (and essentially, what was left of K1) under hold.
When the next full moon came, Atsuro thought he was prepared, though nothing could prepare any of them for what the events of that day would be. A demon that Atsuro and Seth had been sent off to negotiate with ended up causing Abel to nearly lose it due to making him believe that Seth had been killed by Naoya, who now went by the name of Cain. Abel was eventually calmed down, but not before he nearly killed Cain and actually did kill his long time demon companion and now-advisor Kikuri-Hime.
Another full moon came to pass, and then a new moon came. Surprisingly enough, Abel in one of his most human moments announced that the five of them were taking a trip to the mysterious island he and Cain had spent that odd space of five minutes in that lead to Abel killing Belphegor and Seth joining the group. Atsuro had no idea what to expect on the island, though he was still looking forward to it. It was a vacation of sorts, after all. And after the endless preparations for the war against God, they needed a vacation badly.
