Franchise: Big Eyes, Small Mouth (BESM) 3rd Edition Original Character
Physical Description
He looks like a war refugee, which fits. That's basically what he is. He is quite well described as starving to death for his weight. His hair is a mess, looking like whoever cut it was just hacking chunks off. When clean its a beautiful indigo color, but it generally borders on black due to filth. His clothes consist of a tattered brown shirt one size too large and tattered black pants with numerous holes held up by a rope used as a makeshift belt.
His eyes show the pain of the life he has been through and are colored a gorgeous shade of dark blue. He has huge bags under his eyes as a result of nightmares and the way he is abused to the brink of death by the GA. The way he slouches makes him look about an inch shorter than he really is. He has no shoes.
He looks dirty, but there are cleaner spots that run down his face under his eyes due to how much he cries. His eyes are red and generally puffy. It's quite possible he'd clean up well (aside from the weight), but he dislikes being immersed in water as the "pods" of the psycho-slaves are filled with a liquid substance.
Weapons
None, and he wouldn't have the slightest idea how to use one. He dislikes them.
Abilities/Powers
NOTE: Just cause he has a bucketfull of powers doesn't mean he likes to use them! In fact, he generally won't, at least not until he gains some shreds of confidence.
Well, to start with, Makoto is a psychic. His abilities manifest in many ways, most of which developed through the training he was forced to undertake. He has significant power that can be "tapped" into by outside forces providing they have the ability, be it natural or technological. He does have some powers that make this more difficult. Keep in mind that using his powers drain him ala MP or PP in RPGs.
He can block a psychic attack using his own psychic powers. Its success varies on the power of the attack. An attack does not have to be physical, just anything that effects him in a way he doesn't want. If a bunch of attacks goes at him at once, he can only block one. He is fairly decent at figuring out which one is the strongest to try and block it, but its not fullproof. He seems to favor blocking "status effect" attacks over damaging ones.
He can use his power to eject an invading presence in another person's mind. In his world this meant he could remove someone from being psychically controlled by another, but it could feasibly be used to excorcise a demon. It's a matter of who has the stronger mind, and despite his personality, Makoto does have an amazingly strong mind tempered by his psychic powers.
Makoto can summon a force field of sorts, generated by his psychic power. The force field is fairly limited in that it can only prevent people from teleporting next to him or anything incorporeal passing through. This includes metaphysical attacks like psychic energy. A weapon could still hit him, although if it was magical it would just function like a normal weapon. The field would block the "magic" part. If an attack could pass through an "energy" field, they could not pass through this. It surround hims but doesn't go much further past that. It is rooted in the ground so an attack from underneath would not work. It also requires psychic energy for every "turn" it is maintained.
The teen is capable of healing with his mind, but it takes intense concentration and is more mentally draining than most of his abilities. The concentration required means that all he can really do is hold a simple conversation while doing it. He can't move quickly and certainly can't attack or dodge. As such, he prefers to do this after a fight is over.
Makoto can turn himself invisible, although the invisibility is only to sight and smell. He can still make a bunch of noise if he falls down, people will still feel it if he touches them, and if for whatever insane reason people wanted to bite him, they could still taste him. He can't do much like this, as it requires the same level of concentration his healing does. It drains him just as much as well.
He is able to control other's minds, but its a skill he detests using due to knowing what its like to have no control over how your powers are used. He is able to control the mind of any sentient entity that is not mechanical in nature (mechanical doesn't mean robot. Living dolls apply to. Basically, non-organics), but he can only do so for up to ten minutes. Each minute requires an expenditure of "maintenance", but he can take actions of his own while controlling another. Like many of his powers, its a battle of mental strength to establish the control. Its also a constant battle. If the controlled fights it, they can often break the control before the ten minutes is up. If Makoto uses it for the full ten minutes, it is extrodinarily draining.
He has a strong and permanent shield up against invasion into his mind. He can't lower it, even if he wants to. An invasion is anything that tries to enter his mind, be it an attempt to read his mind, send him a psychic suggestion, or control him via his mind. However, if the message is not malicious, he can still pick it up. That's the only case where he can choose to put up the block. Areas that scream with psychic messages of the non-violent variety are all but impossible for him to block, although he can block a lot of it.
Makoto is able to sense other psychics, although it has been known to flag those who are not psychic as such or those who are as not. Makoto does tend to trust it, but will often not say anything until he has had a chance to observe. His situational awareness means he can often see other clues to this end if he knows to look for them.
He can move objects with his mind through telekinesis as long a they are a solid. Liquid or gas are uneffected. Its VERY draining, and requires some concentration. He can hold a full conversation and function pretty well, but he can't attack or defend himself. And he can't perform any other skills that require him to concentrate. Heavier objects require more effort. He can only lift a little more than he would be physically capable of were he in shape and healthy.
The teen is capable of telepathy as well. He can send and well as receive thoughts, although if he is trying to read the mind of a person who wouldn't want it, its harder due to natural blocks people put up. If a person is the type that guards their mind (even without realizing!) it takes more effort. He can read the mind of anything as long as its sentient enough to have thoughts. More simple creatures tend to read in feelings and concepts rather than words. It requires the same concentration level as telekinesis. Reading surface thoughts is much easier than digging into a person's mind, the latter taking more energy.
He has two main "attacks" he can perform with his psychic power as well. The first is called "Psycho Burst" and can weaken a target's mind (although they can usually recover). It is purely an attack using his mind, meaning most armor is useless unless it is specifically designed against psychic attacks. It can effect ghosts that would be unharmed by physical attacks. However, a strong mind can block it and if Makoto fails to "connect" with the attack, he receives the damage instead. If he's lucky he'll only receive part of the intended attack, but it can hit him full force. It easily takes the most energy, but its only one expenditure per usage. The "damage" is felt in the mind, and is roughly equivalent to being physically punched by a strong boxer. No specific spot would hurt. The pain expressed is more "general".
His secondary attack is referred to as "Heart Drain" and is extremely useful if Makoto wishes to keep fighting for an extended amount of time. It effects the person in that they feel their mental energy being drained. Understandably, he gets more of a boost if the person has developed psychic powers. He won't willingly go past causing a person to pass out from mental exhaustion, and doesn't like to go that far. The only real pain it causes is a tightness in the chest.
Skills
He may look weak and fragile, and in a way he is, but his body doesn't seem to know when to quit. He can take a beating and a half and still survive. Doesn't mean he won't be in massive and indescribable amounts of pain, but he'll live. It seems harder to knock him out and his body is resistant to going into shock.
Being a longtime psychic means he has a greater mental energy to draw on than most. If someone else were to suddenly become a psychic with his same basic power level, he could outlast them.
He has eidetic memory. Once he learns something, he will never forget it and has good potential to draw out the information again. Sometimes his lack of confidence or worry creates a "block" over the information, but its there.
Makoto is extremely aware of his surroundings. In fact, one might say he's overly aware. He's worried that something is gonna jump out at him and eat him, or worse. However, it allows him to notice things before most people or pick out details others might miss.
Weaknesses
Makoto is a total blunder on the battlefield. He often makes mistakes about what he should do. He'll walk into an attack by accident and almost always misreads body language. He'll block his face when they are aiming for his stomach. He is a better fighter from a distance and should never be put on the "front line".
He can't physically attack to save his life. He "hits like a girl", so to speak. Even trying his hardest he'd be lucky to leave a minor bruise on a person.
He also has an immense phobia of anything he perceives as connected to the "Global Alliance", an organization from his world he escaped from. Full explanation in the History Section. The fear is well founded, they are not happy that he got away and could potentially pursue him across the dimensions.
Makoto suffers terrible nightmares. The kind that make him scream like he is being burned alive. He is rarely able to wake up from these on his own and they have made him scared of sleep, contributing even more to his ragged appearance. He only sleeps when he absolutely has to. The nightmares are of the pain inflicted on being used as an unwilling battery of the "Psycho-Slave" machines. Full explanation in the history section. His screams and thrashing from these nightmares could wake up an entire city block.
Personality
Makoto acts much like an abused puppy. You look at him hard and he'll wince. He likes to find the darkest corner of a room and curl up into a ball, often rocking back and forth. He follows orders well, but is always fearful he'll do something wrong, ironically causing himself to do more things wrong than he otherwise would.
If you were to yell at him he'd react like you were beating the living crap out of him. He doesn't like to talk and probably has the lowest self esteem of 99.9% of the world. He constantly apologizes, and if he is criticized for doing so he will apologize again. He doesn't trust people and is afraid that if he makes a friend they will die. He's extremely hard to get close to and hasn't had someone he would consider a friend for as long as he could remember.
He a huge disaster, and even people who like to tease others will often get bored with his completely spineless nature. He cries a lot, but never loud enough that people can hear. He never looks people in the eye.
Giving him food is a good start to getting him to trust you. However, he'd quite likely eat himself sick for fear that he would never be able to eat like that again.
History of Enid
A group of scientiests had gathered the worlds psychics and they all predicted that the world was headed for catastrophe on a level worse than seen in the movie, "The Day After Tomorrow". The global warming induced superstorm would not merely die, but rage over the planet. They were laughed at. Instead of arguing it, shelters were built by and for the supporters of the group that would one day be known as the League of Arcologies, or LOA. They were the only truly safe ones when the predicted disaster hit.
The LOA have developed machines that can only be powered by psychics, dubbed "psycho-frames". They are, quite simply, mechas in the anime sense of the word. The LOA are trying to find and recruit psychics, believing that if they create a strong enough psychic power, they can quell the stroms that have and are ravaging the planet.
Many people fear the psychics, and a group of the more "rabid" banded together to create the Global Alliance. The GA believes that the superstorm was not predicted, but caused by the psychics. They insist that the LOA must not be allowed to gather psychics, fearing that the power would morph into something terrible that would be used to overthrow the fragmented world government so that the psychics could control everyone. They say a giant sattelite should be built and sent into space to calm the weather. The "Butterfly Project", named based on the Chaos theory and weather, does not have the necessary technology. In secret, the GA is kidnapping psychics to force them to use their powers to guide the laser.
At one point, the GA and the LOA were disputing over a neutral territory. The GA had much more funding and predicted completely crushing the LOA, but it was then the LOA introduced the psycho-frames, barely managing a victory. The GA secretly decided fire must be fought with fire and took apart some stolen psycho-frames. The versions they rebuilt are better and don't need a psychic pilot. Instead, they need a psychic battery. With that, a "normal" person can pilot them. To give power to these "Psycho-Slaves", the GA kidnaps any psychics they detect and shove them into stasis into these robots. The act of using the psychic power is indescribably painful to the psychics, akin to burning alive without the relief of death. The war has become a stalemate due to the Psycho-Slaves. Many question the GA's methods, but the irrational fear of psychic power seems to keep a general support for the GA.
Makoto's History
Makoto was born right after the first Psycho-Slaves were created. He had a typical life for a little boy growing up in Enid. His parents sided with neither the LOA or the GA, and scraped and suffered to try and find enough food for the family. However, poor Makoto began showing psychic powers at around four. His parents tried to get him to hide them, but somehow both sides of the conflict got word. The LOA wanted to protect him, but agents of the GA got there first, kidnapping the child. It was the last Makoto saw of his parents, and he has no idea if they live.
Makoto was forced into intense training to develop his psychic powers. If he didn't comply, not only did he get no food but was rather horribly abused. When he reach around eight they shoved him into a psycho-slave. It was the beginning of years of pain that have blurred together in his mind. At night they would toss him into a holding cell and he would sleep a fitful sleep. It was not much rest, the nightmares caused by the memories of the pain the psycho-slaves caused him were terrible. In fact, the mental drain of the machines were so great that it slowed the development of his mind. While his looks seventeen, he is more accurately described at being thirteen.
Makoto was having one of his terrible nightmares one night when members of the LOA used the psycho-frames to bust open the compound. The slaves scattered, and Makoto was one of the handful lost as the GA fought with the LOA machines. He wandered into a more wartorn area of the land susceptible to storms. He was injured and weak, and as he felt himself slipping away, he made a wish that he had been granted a happier life. A portal responded to this desire and dumped him onto Dimension Island.
