Physical Description
The first trait of Atem's that will catch most people's attention is his hair. It sets new standards for anime styling and is hard for even skilled cosplayers to reproduce. It's odd in that it is natural, as in he doesn't do anything special to it. It has a general spiked star shape to it, with the majority being black. The edges are purple with a hint of pink, although its not uncommon for it to appear more magenta. Down at the neck the purple is a bi ton the darker side. He has stiff spiky blond bangs, with one side hanging down far more than the other. They are roughly thes ame length, although the style can make it hard to tell. The side that hangs down comes a little past his neck. There are three lightning like jagged prongs that come up from his bangs. One in the middle and two to either side, with the middle one being the most jagged. They are part of his bangs, as when you see him from the side they are seperate from the main hair. The arc forward just a tad.
Atem has fairly harsh eyes, and his soft expressions rely very much on the rest of his face. They do hold emotion fairly well, but Atem's most common expression seems to be a harsh gaze. In truth, a kind smile is just as common, but often not remembered. His eyes are really his most vibrant feature. His skin is heavily tanned, making it clear he grew up in a place with a lot of sun and has an ethnic background of people who also got a lot of sun. The eyes are a dark purple in color.
Atem's preferred style of clothing falls rather firmly into "punk" fashion, and has been described by some as "fetish fuel". Its somewhat understandable, considering he tends to like tight clothes, leather, metal, and chains for his outfits. His most common outift tends to consist of a "muscle shirt" style tight shirt in either navy or black, tight blue jeans, and a leather jacket. The jacket he wears more like a short cape, and he keeps it with a silver snap button at the throat. The "cape" seems to have the power to defy, as one site put it, both wind and gravity. He's generally only seen in black leather boots with silver studding arranged on the boot and leather straps that connect via silver snaps to stay on.
His accesories vary, but you can pretty much guarantee it'll involve metal and/or leather. He generally isn't seen without his bracer-like bracelts, which are actually fairly similar to what he wore as a Pharaoh, just modernized. They are straight black metal, the edges being raised silver. Four large round studs are arranged evenly in the center of the black area of the bracers. He often puts on multiple copper or silver bangles as well. He'll sometimes strap leather straps to his upper arms. Around his neck hanging from an extremely sturdy but small silver chain is an expensive looking silver cartouche. Silver as in the metal, not just the color. It is etched rather professionally with the hieroglyphs for his name, although they use the phonetic hieroglyphs rather than literal ones.
He generally wears a black leather belt with evenly spaced rows of small silver studs, one at the top, one a the bottom. The belt doesn't buckle in the traditional fashion, instead it clicks together via a silver rectangular piece that is in the same position as a buckle would be. He is often seen with a second belt of identical design, although is hangs at an angle from his waist. A leather card deck pouch is attached to it, and keeps with the style of the blet. It is attached to the right side, or the side of the belt that hangs down more. From his left side, a moderately sized metal chain hangs from the sideways belt, hooking at one of the studs in the front and one in the back. Its pointless beyond contributing to Atem's sense of fashion.
The parts of his wardrobe that never change is really just the cartouche and leather jacket. He keeps the same theme with all of his wardrobe though, and very heavily favors black, navy, and dark blue for color choices. He generally doesn't use Yuugi's sefet (Ancient Egyptian blade), but he hooks it through his properly worn belt for a makeshift sheath if he has to.
Weapons
Atem has two weapons, although generally he'll only have one at any given time, allowing Yuugi to wield the other. If he has the sefet, he'll hook it through his properly worn belt. His other weapon are the deck of forty Duel Monsters cards he shares with Yuugi. In his home world, the monster spirits once used in battle in Ancient Egypt had become little more than a card game enhanced by hologram technology, barring the interference of some magic or power that caused more literal damage. However, on the Island the cards function the same way they did in Ancient Egypt, and are literally capable of summoning monsters and allowing spells to be cast.
One thing that makes Atem's deck different than Yuugi's, a fact Atem makes sure to maintain by switching these three cards into the Side Deck Yuugi carries, is that there are three special cards within. These cards were capable of summoning literal power even in the modern era of his own world. They were the cards of the Three Phantom Gods, commonly known as "God Cards". The cards have a tendency to literally smite most that attempt to use them, and one pretty much has to have a connection to Atem's past to use them. They are unusual in that they require three tributes to even summon, although theoretically they could be brought forth on the Island without them. The gods would not react well to this. Atem doesn't like to use them unless the situation requires it due to their overwhelming power.
Its possible Yuugi could summon and control the cards, what with being Atem's reincarnation. However, it is not a situation Atem would let occur, as the gods are quite capable of killing those that displease them. The cards themselves are the blue backed "THE GOD OF OBELISK", the red backed "SAINT DRAGON - THE GOD OF OSIRIS", and the yellow/gold backed "THE SUN OF GOD DRAGON". However, it should be noted that even in their home world they are known by a variety of names. THE SUN OF GOD DRAGON, for instance, is often referred to as simply "Ra". They are massively powerful, and even those completely dead in terms of spirit sense can feel the power coming off them when they are present.
Atem can also use the Millenium Pendant as a catalyst, and indeed enabler, of many powers relating to darkness. This can, however, be a problem because he has given the Pendant to Yuugi. The Pendant itself represents the power of unity, and he believes his connection to Yuugi will allow the Pendant to afford the shorter teenager a measure of protection.
Abilities/Powers
Atem has the ability to summon a Persona, a physical manifestation of his psyche. The power was gained after the Millenium Puzzle, and therefore Atem, were forcefully dumped into the mysterious TV World. His Persona resembles an Ancient Egyptian guardian statue. It is shirtless, and its skin almost appears to be smooth stone. Atem's third eye is permanently on its forehead. Its name is Temu and seems to be drawn from an aspect of Ra, specifically the god Atum, which is actually who Atem was named after. Temu's powers, or spells, or focused around offense and lowering the opponent's ability to function in a fight. There is a lean of intimidation in Temu's skills as well, understandable when you consider Persona are basically another self of their user. It, and as a result Atem, is resistant to electricity. However, it is weak against light based skills. Temu's image is in the pictures section.
Atem has other powers, although since being removed from the Puzzle/Pendant they have weakend considerably. And all the following powers require he have direct access to the Pendant to harness, which as previously mentioned can be problematic with it in Yuugi's posession. The only latent power of the Pendant is the ability to sense inner darkness. Atem can gauge how dark a person's heart is via the Pendant. Not only that, he can find the main source of their darkness. He uses those powers to set up his Yami no Games (Games of Darkness) and assist in his Mind Crushes.
The Games of Darkness are highly dangerous and often life threatening trials in which Atem preys on the inner darkness of the victim. It should be noted that there are two types of Darkness Games, all dependant on if the other person has access to the power of a Millenium Item. The first is one that can always be backed out upon, but the very nature of the games means most people lack the ability to turn away from the darkness to do so. Most people meaning no one has ever turned down a proposed "game" from Atem.
Basically, Atem uses his powers to set up a trial that puts the other "player" at an extreme disadvantage due to playing around their darkness. He often seems to put himself at a disadvantage, and is more than willing to put his life on the line as a wager in such games. In games where his life isn't at stake, the outcome of a loss on his end (not that it has ever happened) varies from game to game. It tends to revolve around letting the other player get away with some injustice or another. If he wins, there is also no penalty beyond the other person having to stick to the agreed conditions beforehand. However, if one cheats by breaking the rules of the game set before starting, Atem subjects the other player to a "Penalty Game", which consists of trapping the person in an illusion born from their own inner darkness.
The other type of Game of Darkness is when two Millenium Item users use the powers of their Items to face off. The loss of one of these games also varies. If Atem wins, generally nothign comes of it as the other user is harmed in some way of their own doing. He is known to use the power of the Puzzle/Pendant to expel darkness from another person, as what happened in a fight versus Yami no Bakura/Dark Bakura. Although that could be argued the power of unity being used to save Bakura from his attempt at sacrificing himself. However, if Atem were to lose the result is often much more dire. Examples include the fight vs Pegasus' Millenium Eye, where Atem's soul would have been sealed with a card via "Mind Card" or one of the many fights against Dark Bakura, where the evil spirit would have taken the Millenium Puzzle.
Atem doesn't need to be in a Game of Darkness to merit a Penalty Game like punishment. Although in cases like those he refers to the power as something else. This power is known as a "Mind Crush", and while its first usage shattered the pieces of a person's heart and forced him into a coma where he had to put them back together, it is shown that it can function exactly like a Penalty Game. It seems that the Mind Crush effects a person based on how much darkness they truly have. Seto Kaiba was revealed to actually have a kind heart via his little brother Mokuba. Player Killers of the Duelist Kingdom, however, who were in it for purely the greed and were corrupted by darkness, earned the Penalty Game like punishment.
The Millenium Pendant also has the power to find those its user considers close.
One thing that should be noted is the sensing darkness and finding friends powers are ones Yuugi could actually access. However, neither Atem nor Yuugi realize this and they won't until it comes up in the RP.
Skills
Atem is skilled in all forms of combat that existed in the New Kingdom of Ancient Egypt thanks to his memories. This means he is capable of figthing with swords (particurlarly the sefet), spears, bows and other various projectiles, etc. He is also extremely skilled in fighting with words and is well known for figuratively disarming the opponent with his "side comments" and taunts. This lends to his already high skill with intimidation.
Atem's main skill, however, is in games. He is not often referred to as "Yuugi-ou" or "King of Games" for his lack of skill. He can jump into a game he's never heard of and come out the winner against an expert in the game. He's done it against the creator of Dungeon Dice Monsters, Ryuuji Otogi. He finds it extremely loathful to step out of a game before a conclusion is reached, and is a master at turning the table at the split second seemingly by his strength of spirit alone. Atem very very rarely loses a game, and he will not purposely lose unless a life depends on it - which actually hasn't always been true.
Atem's greatest area of skill is in Duel Monsters, which he had even before regaining his memories. In fact, he considers himself a Duelist above all other skills. His skills in the game have made him a literal legend in the Duel Monsters community, a development that would not be changing in the future of his world. He instintively knew that the cards were not merely cards, but were connected to a sentience. At first he thought of this as the "Heart of the Cards", but after regaining his memories realized that it was likely a residual memory of the monster spirits the cards housed. It's likely the only person capable of beating him at the game is Yuugi - a fact that Yuugi would adamantly deny.
Atem is a fan of Capsule Monsters and Dungeon Dice Monsters as well, and is in fact friends with the creator of the latter. He is more skilled than Yuugi with those games, but he is not as good at them as he is with Duel Monsters.
Personality
Atem comes across as arrogant to many. Just his way of speaking is arrogant by Japanese standards. He uses the cocky "ore", a masculine pronoun considered somewhat rude espeically when used by teenagers. He also rarely uses honorifics, which is accepted as a standard practice of politeness in Japan. For Atem to use an honorific towards you, you have to earn it. The only one he doesn't use an honorific towards out of a close relationship rather than arrogance is Yuugi.
His way of speaking pretty heavily belies his personality. He's assertive and confident to the point of seeming arrogant and cocky. He does have a rather soft side, which can be seen most clearest around Yuugi. He tends to judge others harshly and has zero tolerance for those that refuse to fight a fair fight. He respects those who are willing to put honest effort into their endeavors, and seems to have a level of respect to those willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for their friends, likely a result of his own past.
Atem can be described rather well as harsh exterior, soft interior. Everyone thinks he is invincible and tough, but the teenager actually has a pretty average level of self doubt. He's more willing to do what needs to be done than most and sees a lot of things with clarity quicker than others. He's extremely observant and can piece things together without much effort.
He's also an extremely loyal friend and will fight to protect that and those which he cares about. In fact, those he cares about the most being in danger is about the only thing that will kick him into action emotionally rather than calculatingly. He hates it when innocents are put in the line of fire, particularly if its because of something he is involved in. He sometimes has trouble accepting that others have strength and can fight as well as he can, although his acceptance of that also leads directly into many of his self doubts.
Atem has a rage mode. Oh lord does he have a rage mode. Rage modes are what causes him to access his Mind Crush power, and there have been many cases where if he'd been able he may have killed someone in his rage mode. He does have a "quirk" in that if he truly despises a person he prefers to let them live. He finds death far too easy an escape in many cases.
Atem also "likes" Yuugi, but despite the other teen's actions isn't sure if Yuugi is okay with that relationship actually going anywhere. He knows how Yuugi tends to hold back in things and realizes that if he wants the relationship to advance, he's going to have to take the reins. Unlike Yuugi, Atem never had anything beyond platonic feelings for Anzu, but he is pretty sure that is whre part of Yuugi's hesitation comes from. It's rather unlike the former Pharaoh to approach a situation cautiously, but he's so concerned about hurting Yuugi that he is afraid of being assertive about things. It leads to some awkward and altogether cute situations. But he's not wrong about having to take the lead. If he wants the relationship to move forward, he is pretty much going to have to take the first step. Despite having befriended others since coming to the Island, his personality means he doesn't think there is anyone he can talk to about it.
Yes, Atem thinks he need relationship advice but is too worried about the waves it might cause if he were to ask for it. That and he's stubborn.
History
In the New Kingdom era of Ancient Egypt, ~3,000 years ago, Atem ruled as a young Pharaoh. He held one of seven holy treasures his father had created to help protecte the kingdom, with the help of his brother and Atem's uncle. It was known as the Millenium Pendant. He had six priests, each of which held one of the six other "Millenium Items". He had ascended the throne upon his father's suicide, which the man had performed to atone for the truth behind the creation of the MIllenium Items. The blood and bones of 1,000 sacrifices, nearly the entire population of an Egyptian village, had been melted into the gold used to create the items.
A man who fancied himself, and likely correctly for his skills, the King of Thieves showed up in Atem's throne room toting the sarcophogus of the young Pharaoh's father, he set the events that would lead to Atem sealing himself into the Pendant into motion. The Thief King was the only survivor of the massacre that had created the items, and wanted revenge upon the throne. Atem's uncle had not realized there had been survivors, but he saw it as an opportunity for his son (Priest Seto) to take the throne. Not that Seto knew the man's identity.
The Thief King had access to a powerful monster spirit knwon as Diabound. It had formed from the hatred and lust of revenge of his former people. His lust allowed the demon nown as Zorc Necrophades to surface, and when it was clear the battle could not be won Atem used the power of the Millenium Pendant to seal the demon and himself. The Pendant shattered into the Puzzle, and Atem sealed the spell with his memories and name. If they were ever regained, Zorc would be revived.
~3,000 years in the future, a man named Sugoroku Mutou finds the shattered Puzzle in the Tomb of the Nameless Pharaoh. Able to extract it where so many have failed, he took it back to his shop. When his grandson found it, it would be eight years before the Puzzle was solved and the consciousness inside awoke.
Not even fully aware of itself as a seperate presence at first, the consciousness would begin to materialize as its own being as it acted on Yuugi's suppressed emotions. It wouldn't be long before it realized it was a seperate power, a realization that would help its "host" later on in the ability to be two souls. He became known as "Yami no Yuugi" or "Dark Yuugi", but after both souls fully accepted each other a friendship would form and he would become known as "Mou Hitor no Yuugi" or "The Other Yuugi". They begin to work towards regaining The Other Yuugi's lost memories.
With the power of friendship and unity granted from the Millenium Puzzle, Atem as he had learned his name was gained the power to finally defeate Zorc. He returned, still within the Puzzle, to the real world with Yuugi and his friends. The six Millenium Items were handed to the Pharaoh and as he and Yuugi were leaving the ruins, a portal opened up. It swallowed the connected teens as it caused a cave in.
They would meet several people after this, but at one point the Puzzle and as a result Atem, would be thrown into the mysterious TV World at the hands of a man named Tohru Adachi. Atem had no idea how much time passed as he wandered his TV World, but Yuugi and his friends found him just as he was being confrotned by his shadow, his incarnation of his hidden desires. Atem was placed under a MInd Crush and he chose the present with Yuugi at the cost of his past, thus allowing him to recover... and fully seperate from Yuugi and the Puzzle. It also showed for the first clear time that Yuugi and Atem had feelings for each other.
Other
This is a revamped profile created thanks to Yuugi and Atem splitting into two seperate entities. There have been changes made, but they have all come about as a result of the RP. The previous app for Atem and Yuugi will be deleted right after this is posted.
I blend the three Yu-Gi-Oh! canons for Atem's canon. The majority is Duel Monsters, the anime that was dubbed. His backstory prior to Duel Monsters comes from the original anime from Toei. A few powers and such are from the manga.
Card stats, powers, and etc come from the anime. As such, things are very likely to conflict at times with how the game is actually played. This is especially true of the God Cards.
Also, it should be noted he no longer considers himself a Pharaoh. In fact, there will be developments of him learning to be a normal teenager. The nicknames are more for posterity than things he likes or anything of the sort.

Its pointless beyond contributing to Atem's sense of fashion.
