A storage shed began to come into view, and Amaterasu ran head long toward it. She swung her tail, causing a line of ink to appear briefly in front of the door before a sharp cutting sound rang through the air. The pieces of the door fell to the ground and allowed Amaterasu access to the shed. A large television was immediately visible.
Not wasting any time, the wolf skidded to a halt and then bucked, sending Teddie flying off of her and toward the television.
----------------------
The end was so close. Souji could feel it from the direction Magatsu Izanagi beckoned toward. That endless expanse of darkness felt welcoming. Magatsu Izanagi stood patiently, its hand extended to Souji. All he would need to do was take the hand and proceed into the abyss. Just one step; he could let the current pull him in from there.
It was so tempting to just give in. He was so tired, his body exhausted from rejecting himself for so long. He'd experienced so much unnecessary pain as a result of his human self. Souji Seta's role had ended. He'd done what the world needed him to do, and now he could safely fade into oblivion. There was no point in continuing.
And yet...
He found himself looking toward the other path. The spikes reached up from the ground, their thorns beckoning toward him. Shadowy figures stood in the distance, some of them closer, some of them further. Though the path was endless, Souji could see a glowing blue light in the distance, close enough to tough, yet impossibly far. It was nothing but a path of unnecessary hardship and fear.
Why do you hesitate?
He turned around to face the other Izanagi. It still beckoned with its bloodstained hand toward the abyss. The more Souji looked toward that abyss, the more he entertained the thought of taking the hand. This was what Izanagi had meant after all. The world didn't need Souji anymore, so it was best to just let the true Izanagi take over. Even now that they'd supposedly "merged" he was just a useless part that caused Izanagi human pain. If he discarded his humanity, he'd be free.
Something fluttered past Souji. It turned mid-flight and began to flutter around him. He tried to track its flight as it flew. It seemed to be trying to say "No, look again. There's more there that you can't see." It began to fly toward the thorny path, and Souji looked that way. Upon reaching the blue light, it began to hover around it, confusing Souji. The longer he stared at the light, the more defined it became, until he could finally see the light's source.
It was a glowing, blue card.
------------------
While the honden began to buzz with energy, Souji remained asleep, his condition worsening with each passing second. The longer Souji entertained thoughts of descending into the abyss, the more his temperature increased. He had begun to reach dangerous levels now; if his fever did not break soon, he would surely die.
A spark arced across Souji's body, but he was so far into his coma that he didn't respond at all aside from the slight twitch the electricity forced from his nerves. No more bolts came after that. They didn't need to. Izanami would now be aware of something very dark and very familiar in the room where Souji was; a kind of dark energy similar to that Magatsu Izanagi gave off.
The energy would grow stronger and stronger. And yet, there was another energy in the room fighting against it, and it was the only thing keeping Souji from becoming completely consumed.
The center of this energy was an object floating above Souji's upturned palm. A blue card span soundlessly there, waiting for him to crush it.
"Per..."

(OOC: No honorific mistakes were made at any point in this thread, it was all intentional. XD)
Teddie tried to shout out an objection, but it was swallowed by the television. No resistance was offered from the screen. The blond's foot caught the edge of the set, knocking it off balance. It wasn't by just a little bit either, and the television hit the floor with a cracking thud. It was on its back, and an examination of the front would reveal a crack down the center. Definitely wasn't getting used again under any normal circumstances.
---------
Teddie let out a yelp as he pretty much landed head first on the other side of the television, still in human form. He was whining out a list of complaints and rubbing his head when he blinked several times. He could barely see a damn thing. He stopped with the rubbing, the pain for the moment forgotten, and rubbed at his eyes. He lowered them. Still foggy as all hell.
He put his hands on the ground (carpet?) and pushed himself too his feet, wobbling a bit from the bump to the head and the overall intense weakness he was dealing with. The fog perplexed him. It shouldn't be this bad unless it was raining. That was the only time he'd ever had trouble seeing, and even then it really wasn't this much. And he didn't feel upset, if the fog was this bad he should have felt upset. He felt weak, but not upset. Why was he so dizzy, anyways? He shook his head. He'd actually never been on this side in this form, although he wasn't sure why he hadn't reverted like he had every other time before...
His eyes suddenly widened.
He couldn't change forms.
----------
"Kihara-kun?"
Atem looked back over his shoulder. Yuugi had dropped back again. Atsuro was lagging behind again. Atem got a tight look on his face. He hadn't pressed the matter about what Sugoroku and Atsuro had talked about. It was possible that Atsuro didn't even know he knew. But the black haired teenager had been even more mopey then usual since then.
Ryoji and Minato were even further ahead of them, while Anzu, Jounouchi, and Honda were behind them, but ahead of Atem. Sugoroku's back was still giving him issues, and when he'd been asked about it he'd said that he'd just slow them down - Souji was their friend not his. Anzu held a fist to her chest as Yuugi dipped back to Atsuro. She gave a weak smile and ran back towards him as well.
"Come on, Kihara-kun! Seta-kun will be alright, okay?" Anzu said. She was obviously putting on a smile.
Ryoji grimaced and looked at Minato. They'd been coming for several days, and Souji had only been getting worse. Before anyone else could react to anything, however, the front of Atem's shirt began to wiggle like something was writhing beneath it. His eyes widened and he dug the Ring out from under it by the rope it hung from. As soon as it was unobstructed, every prong was completely horizontal, all pointing straight towards the Shrine.
"Something's wrong," Atem stated the obvious.
----------
Izanami had come back by this time, and was piling on the blankets. Souji wasn't sweating. He still wasn't sweating even though even without the fever he'd be ridiculously warm at this point. She was in the middle of putting on anotehr blanket, panic drowning her features, when the spark hit. She actually yelped in surprise and hopped back, the movement knocking the blankets loose from Souji's hand.
Her eyes widened in realization and she darted forward. In a flash the woman standing there wasn't a silver haired young woman with braids, but a woman with flowing silver hair and a white bandage-like outfit. She grabbed Souji's hand, jerked back at the energy, and instead settled on throwing herself over his heavily blanketed body, her head on his far chest and her arms around his neck. She shouted into his chest.
"Izanagi! Don't you dare give in to that! Not after what you went through to prove it to me! Don't put me through what you went through!!" It had hit her by this point. She knew that sensation. It was the energy shadows put off. The inherent darkness of humanity they tried to deny and yet simultaneously wanted to stop fighting. The very thing that Souji and his friends had risked their lives to convince her humanity could over come. Izanagi was no longer the issue. Izanagi had never been the issue. She didn't want to lose what he'd gained in this incarnation. She didn't want to lose...
"Souji!!"

Amaterasu stared down at the television once it fell. She considered repairing it out of kindness toward the owners. Those plans changed once she felt a wave of powerful darkness wash over the area. She whipped her head up. While she had not fought enough Shadows to be able to recognize the sense, she could tell that there was something very wrong with it and it was coming from the shrine.
The wolf broke off into a run, leaving the shed as it was.
-------------
Atsuro looked up at the sound of his name. He gained a slightly confused frown at how Yuugi had doubled back toward him. He knew why Yuugi, and now Anzu, had come toward him. He was letting himself be too obvious. He was trying to not worry them, dammit.
Minato looked back toward Atsuro as well. There was something really wrong with Atsuro, and as much as he felt like he should know it, he couldn't quite put his finger on it. The guy was probably just depressed.
Then the Ring reacted. Atsuro and Minato turned toward Atem, both of them staring at the Ring. Not long after the ring reacted, a white wolf rushed past the group toward the shrine. Minato didn't take long to follow after her.
-------------
It was a card. He knew that card. And he'd lost that card. It wasn't supposed to be his anymore. That butterfly fluttering around it was lying to him.
That's right, Souji. All that's down that path is false promises. Magatsu Izanagi put its hand on Souji's shoulder and dug the steel tips into his flesh. Why won't you listen?
His head began to ache. He began to massage his temples. It was really hot here. He felt like he was burning to death. And he could swear that the other side kept getting closer to him with every passing second.
"...dare give in to that! ...u went through to pro ...n't put me through what you...!!"
The words came to Souji through a filter. It was almost like television static, while at times it sounded like he was hearing that familiar female voice from somewhere underwater. She cried out his name and the memories settled in place long enough for him to remember where he'd heard it before.
"Sayuri?"
------------
Souji's breathing began to become irregular. The card in his hand, while it had shone brightly for a moment, had become dim. Cracks were starting to develop in the card, and with a shattering noise, a glass shard like portion broke off completely. Souji let out a cry of pain, the most he'd reacted since this started, upon the breaking of the card.
Black mist began to rise off of his body in large clouds. It was identical to the mist that humanoid Shadows gave off that easily pointed them out as being as such. He began to gasp for air, almost as if the smoke was choking him.
And finally, at the sound of his own name, he showed the greatest sign of life he'd shown over the past few days.
"...Sayuri...?"

Anzu continued to force her smile, but Yuugi's expression made it seem like he was trying to come to some sort of decision. There was definitely worry there, but there were traces of Atem's expression as well - just softer. Yuugi had his mouth opened when Atem dug into his shirt and pulled out the Ring, but he stopped due to the action. Amaterasu's passing kicked them all into gear. Anzu hesitated the most, at least of the people from Yuugi's world, but chased after. Ryoji looked startled for a moment before dashing after Minato. He didn't quite understand what was going on, but it was clearly bad.
----------
Sayuri had gripped tighter as Souji cried out in pain, not even aware of the mist that had enveloped Souji's body. Her face was still buried in his shoulder, and the grip was tight enough that if he survived, he'd probably have mild bruising. Her eyes widened despite being buried when he gasped out her name, and she jerked her head up. Her eyes were wet.
"Souji! Souji, come out of it!"

"Sayuri, I... I..."
He couldn't even get a full phrase out. He was completely delirious and the amount of energy it was taking for him to even crack his eyes open was too much for his weakened body. He felt himself falling back into the darkness again, and the pull was too much for him to resist. Something had devoured what will he had left.
For the last time, he closed his eyes.
-----------------
That's right, Magatsu Izanagi coaxed. You don't need her, and she has never needed you. She used you in this life for her own devices, and now she only uses you to satisfy herself.
It was now that Souji realized he'd slipped into a current of water. No, it wasn't water. But it was something pulling him toward the abyss. He didn't look toward it quite yet.
The light in the distance was beginning to fade, and the butterfly had flown back in Souji's direction. He couldn't help but feel it was trying to help him, somehow. But it couldn't call out to help him.
Useless pest, Magatsu Izanagi stated.
--------------------
Souji wasn't dead. Not yet. As more and more of the card began to crack, Izanami would feel the life fading from Souji's body. There was nothing left that she could do to help him.
-------------------
Minato stopped a short distance from the residence Souji had been resting in for the past few days. Amaterasu was growling at the building for some reason. He started taking steps toward the building, and once he found he could get to it, tried to open the door. Instead, he was answered by a nasty shock. He swiftly pulled his hand away.
There was something sealing them out of the room, and there was something wrong with Souji inside.
Since he was unable to slide the door open, Minato settled with banging on it instead.
"Izanami! Let us in!"

Sayuri's scream of Souji's name wouldn't be heard through the veil Souji was trapped behind, falling ever further past anyone's grasp. It wouldn't be heard past the microspace the battling forces within the Shrine had created within the residence.
----------
Whether Souji would be aware of the specifics at the moment wasn't important. It was true either way. There was a tendril of blackness almost like a long fingerless hand wrapping around one of his wrists and both of his ankles, pulling him down further into the darkness. The angle was odd, sharp, as if it wanted to pull him straight down but something forced it into a downward angle. The angle shot straight towards the butterfly and the light.
Come, come... it's all a weakness, fragile, fleeting... embrace eterinity... pain that way, humanity is pain...
The light could do nothing but weakly beckon and pulsate in argument.
----------
Anzu had both her hands up to her mouth, covering each half equally as she stared on, clearly unsure what to do. Jounouchi and Honda exchanged a glance for half a moment before Jounouchi was running up towards the door, having to nudge past a nearly broken looking Ryoji to get up to it. Yuugi looked absolutely aghast, but instead of rushing forward he brought his hands up to his mouth to cup it. Atem was standing next to him, holding the Ring. He looked deadly serious as he stared at what the others were doing.
"Why don't you just try to kick it down?" Jounouchi spoke to Minato, proceeding to illustrate his point. The door shook, but it didn't give, and Jounouchi was jerking his foot back and hissing. He'd apparently hurt himself.
Yuugi's shout came right after Jounouchi's kick, "Seta-kun! Let us in! Please, we're here to he-"
All conversation dropped at that point when a bright flash of dark energy that would probably have Amaterasu spinning on a dime to face a surprised looking Yuugi. The flash was bright enough it had everyone else's attention. And the only one that really looked like he had any fucking clue what was going on was Atem, who seemed surprised but of a different sort. He jerked his head towards the door as the prongs of the Ring facing it jingled. One of the prongs had turned to point straight at the Puzzle.
"Jounouchi-kun! Now!" Atem suddenly shouted.
Jounouchi blinked for a moment before realization crossed his face. He spun around as he lifted his leg and hit the door with the side of it with a movement that it made it painfully clear to everyone there the boy could hold his own in a fight if it came down to it - a fact Minato and Atsuro would likely be aware of, but Ryoji took a sudden surprised step back. The door splintered for a moment before falling inwards.

Before Souji could even argue, the tendrils were wrapped around him, forcing him in. He couldn't pull himself free of the current. The words continued to coax him into the darkness, but they were just formalities now. The most they could do was make him stop struggling against the inevitable.
"No, I--"
Embrace the abyss, Magatsu Izanagi coaxed, adding its words to that of the darkness. Sleep now. It will be over soon...
---------------
Minato took a step back as Jounouchi tried to kick down the door without much success. There was some kind of barrier or something blocking their way in. It didn't seem to be a way in... and then Yuugi's puzzle reacted. Minato wasn't sure what it did, but it seemed to have dispelled the barrier enough for Jounouchi to kick the door down. Minato ran into the residence and into the room where he'd seen Souji last.
He wasn't entirely sure what to make of the scene when he arrived. Izanami had thrown herself over Souji's body and was crying into his chest, calling his name. There was a black mist rising from his body that was uncomfortably similar to the mist Shadows gave off. And in his hand, a cracked card.
He crouched down by Souji and put his hand on Izanami's shoulders before shaking her lightly. "What happened?! What's happening to him!?"
Atsuro came in after the others and stayed back from them. He didn't know what to make of the scene and had no idea what to do.
"Souji?" he hesitantly called.
------------
Something bubbled through the darkness. A familiar voice. No, multiple familiar voices. The loudest one was the one he'd known the longest of all of them. It wasn't even directed toward him, but that concern for him... he could hear it. It was coming from the direction of the light.
"Minato? Atsuro?"

Everyone piled in after Jounouchi got the door down, running past the blond teenager who headed in after them. They ran around him, crowding him, as Minato shook the shoulders of an already rising Sayuri. She blinked in surprise at their arrival, looked towards Amaterasu, and then jerked her head back towards Minato.
"He's falling prey to the exact thing he told me humans could rise above! You're his friends! You're..." she looked like someone had murdered her dog, bit back a sob, and shook her head, "You're the only ones that can get through to him! I can't do anything... I'm... I'm just a goddess!" Her expression turned serious, "Don't let him forget what he taught me before!"
"Seta-kun!" Anzu said. She was actually closest to the teenager, having used her smaller size to nudge past even Minato. She fell to her knees beside him and looked towards Yuugi. There was only a slight pause over Atem as her eyes passed him, barely noticable, "Yuugi, that thing with the Puzzle before? Can it help again?"
Yuugi bit his lip, "I don't know. Atem?"
"The Items are reacting to the darkness around here for some reason," Atem said, shaking his head to indicate his lack of understanding.
Yuugi looked lost for a moment before shaking his head, "Seta-kun! Can you hear us! Don't give in! We're here for you!" After a moment of no response he looked at everyone, "Everyone, you too! I think he needs to hear all of us!"
Ryoji was by the doorway, just staring, "I think we're too late..."

The words were still being muffled through the darkness. He could hear everyone now, but he couldn't make out words. But he could easily hear Magatsu Izanagi, coaxing him to stop struggling as the tendrils cut into his arms. He reached out his arm to grasp the shining card.
It was so far, yet simultaneously so close. He had to reach it, but he couldn't reach it, and he was being pulled under...
--------------------
It was almost surreal to Atsuro seeing Izanami break down like this. He'd spent enough time around gods and spirits to know that it took something major to make them break down like this. Of course Souji meant this much to her though, since he was her opposite number. But he couldn't think of anything to do to help her.
Minato turned toward Ryoji. "We can't just give up like that! Not if he's not dea--"
He was cut off by a high-pitched whine from Amaterasu. The wolf began frantically pawing at Souji's body and nudging him with her nose. Her barks began to become rather panicked sounding. The reason why would soon be rather obvious.
Souji had stopped breathing.

Anzu looked desperate as Atem's response lacked in any real explanation. She looked at Yuugi in expectant desperation. Both her hands were at the top of her shirt, pulling it forward and into a bundle. Her knuckles were white. It was clear she was expecting Yuugi to have the answer.
"Pull yourself together! Don't you know how many people you have fighting for you?!" Jounouchi shouted at Souji at Yuugi's encouragement, almost drowning out Minato's response to Ryoji just before it was cut off.
Honda rubbed the back of his head and looked towards Yuugi as well. He had no more idea what to do about the situation than Anzu. Yuugi was always the one that pulled them together with things like this...
Ryoji looked the most trapped of all of them. He was worse than even Anzu, and the look he gave Minato as he tried to adominish him wasn't one of hope. His eyes said he'd given up, that he didn't get how Minato could keep fighting.
Atem was looking down and clenching his fists. The last time he'd felt this useless... the last time he'd genuinely felt this trapped, he'd died. There was no Items to save them this time. He didn't know why the Puzzle had reacted before, but now it was useless. If Yuugi couldn't do anything, then...
And then Amaterasu whined. Everyone's heads jerked up as she began to paw at Souji. Izanami had frozen up, her eyes distant. It wasn't a slow turn towards Souji's still body, but it almost seemed it. For almost everyone, if not everyone, in the room, time had seemed to slow. Izanami's eyes were distant.
"He's slipping..." her voice was hollow, when suddenly her eyes snapped back into focus and she looked down at Souji, "Souji! Souji, you're you!! I wouldn't be able to... dammit, Izanagi, there's a soul there that you're just discarding!!"

He was almost entirely pulled under now. With his strength almost entirely gone, he couldn't find himself resisting much more. The uncomfortable heat was fading, but so was his awareness of the world around him. The words of Magatsu Izanagi settled in all around him.
So this was his fate, as a worthless sha--
"Dammit, Izanagi, there's a soul there that you're just discarding!!"
------------------
Minato's head snapped toward Izanami at her comment. A soul?! But Souji didn't have one. That's why they were in this mess, wasn't it?! But there wasn't time; he still wasn't breathing.
"It doesn't matter what you are, Souji! Because you're our friend. So... wake up!"
Amaterasu continued to nudge him with her nose. She looked as lost as anyone else there, though with the extra benefit of not having human vocal cords to encourage Souji with.
Souji's heart began to slow its beat...
------------------
He pulled against the current, arms outstretched toward the glowing card. There were important things he knew now. He couldn't die here.
Souji Seta had been a created personality for a god. He was Izanagi's avatar. His purpose was as a vessel for the god he shared a consciousness with. He was easily discardable and had fulfilled his purpose, and now all that was left was for him to leave this world. That was how it worked.
Except that wasn't all true.
The black tentacles holding him snapped at his pull. They were strong, but only as strong as his will let them be. This was all in his head.
Before he knew it, he was free. He broke off running toward the card in the distance, before the other end could get a chance to pull at him again. Magatsu Izanagi screamed at him to return, but he kept running, through the thorns of the world's hardships and to where the glowing card and its butterfly guardian waited. As he grew close, the interior of a shrine appeared around them.
He could see someone approaching from the other side of the shrine, and as he approached, he realized it was him. Another him, wearing the same expression as he did. They held their hands out toward the card.
"I don't know about you... but I'm tired of not knowing who I am," Souji said. The other Souji nodded. They clasped their hands over the card, shattering it.
----------------------
"Per... so... na."
Souji's hand clenched over the blue card, shattering it. He gave a gasp as the blue fire surged up around him, scattering the smoke that had enveloped his body and bringing air into his body as it formed into a familiar white garbed Persona. His eyes opened just a crack so he could look up at Izanagi-no-Okami.
"Thou have regained thyself, and in doing so, regained thy ability to summon. Use thy power well, lest it be lost once more."
And with that, the Persona disappeared once more. Souji turned toward the others.
"Sorry about that."

The words continued to come from the small army of Souji's friends crowded into the room. There was way too many of them for the small space, and it in a way a miracle they weren't tripping over each other. Atem and Ryoji were the only ones that remained silent. Ryoji had jerked his head away and placed a palm against the wall with one hand over his face, all but succumbed to what was clearly the inevitable in his eye. Atem looked like he wanted to say something, but every time he opened his mouth, he seemed to think better of it. Even Honda had joined in by this point.
All shouting ceased the intant Souji poke the four syllables that made up the Engrish pronunciation of Persona. Even Ryoji had to turn his head at the sudden hush that had fallen over the room. He turned in time for Izanagi-no-Okami to materialize above Souji, and almost fell down in surprise. His back did hit the wall, and the only thing that tainted the surprise in his features was the distrusting relief.
Everyone fell in practically at once as Souji opened his eye and spoke, but Izanami moved the quickest. Still in her humanoid goddess form, she threw her self over Souji's upper body, wrapping her arms around his back despite him still being on the floor and burying her head into his upper chest, leaving Amaterasu at his feet and probably ramming the wolf to the side if she didn't move. Personal space didn't exist as most of the rest of the group swarmed around him, Izanami, and Amaterasu. As before, only two held back. Atem didn't look like he quite knew what he was supposed to do as people darted past him, and Ryoji was still in shock at the scene.
Izanami's words were muffled by Souji's chest, which would be getting damp from her tears, "Don't ever do that again! I don't want to get you back just to be torn from you again!!"
The overall relief in the room was downright palpable.

Souji rather suddenly found a goddess sobbing into his chest. Unsure just what to do, he settled on putting a hand on her back in an attempt to pull her closer. Amaterasu managed to get knocked away by Izanami's swift action. The wolf gave an annoyed growl, but settled with sitting down next to Souji and licking at his hand.
"I'm back now," Souji said in a low voice to Izanami. "That's the important part, right?"
Minato rushed to Souji's side with the others. He seemed unsure what to say for a few moments before saying, "Glad to see you're back."
Atsuro stayed back. Souji was the others' friend, not his. He'd let the people who were closer to Souji talk to him instead.
After a few moments of listening to the others, Souji dropped his voice so that only Izanami could hear it. "...After the others leave, we need to talk."

Ryoji looked like a fish out of water, the way his mouth was trying and failing to form words. After a few minutes he settled on hugging his arms, staring at Souji as if trying to convince himself he wasn't hallucinating. He was alive, he'd thought for sure... he shook his head at himself.
Izanami lifted her head from Souji's chest as he whispered at her, looked at him for a moment, before swiftly rising to her feet. She pushed the container of water out of her way with one foot as she smoothed down the front of her odd outfit and looked at the group.
"The fever's broken, and it would be best now if everyone left," she stated. It was rather calm considering the situation everyone had just been through. She didn't look to be willing to brooke any nonsense despite the calm tone of her voice, "My home was not built to house a small army, and Souji-san needs his rest. He just broke a fever, so let's everyone go."
Yuugi blinked and looked over at Izanami. Jounouchi had shot a glare at her and had opened his mouth, but Yuugi spoke before Jounouchi could get anything out, "You're sure he'll be okay now?"
Izanami looked at him, "Souji-san needs his rest," she brushed her hands forward, "So let's go. You as well, Amaterasu. I haven't seen Issun in several days, perhaps you should be looking for him."

Minato looked a little uncomfortable at Izanami's direct request for them to leave. Souji had just woken up, and they were already being chased out? They didn't even get a chance to talk to him? He wasn't even all that sure what exactly had happened back there with Souji. Plus... Teddie was missing. And that bear would never leave Souji's side.
But he complied and walked toward the door, stopping just before passing through to turn back toward Souji. "Call me when you're feeling better."
Souji nodded. "I will."
Amaterasu stood up with a whine, shook herself, and bounded out the door. She didn't seem very concerned at all, or maybe she was just focused on finding Issun. Atsuro followed her out, since he wasn't entirely sure what he was doing here anyways.
It would only be after everyone had left that Souji would sit up. He groaned as he did so; he'd been laying in that position for so long that his muscles were a bit out of practice. He gave a weak cough.
