"A couple weeks now," he said. ((OOC: Pfft... in-universe, at least)) "We technically have the means to return to our old home. It's just we're somehow tethered to this interdimensional space in some way. We always end up getting pulled back here." With a shrug, he explained, "So, we set up base in an apartment here for now until we can figure out what's got us tied to Dimensional Island..."

"I guess that would make sense," Beth replied. "So would an incident with another being from a different dimension be extra-dimensional or international?"
"Who's the rest of this 'we'?" she added.

Otto chuckled. "I guess it could be both if they're from another's dimension's version of another country."
It was only when Beth asked that he realized he never properly explained that. "Oh, me and my team! I'm part of a Time Squad unit; we normally live on a satellite in the 1 millionth century, and we go back in time to correct historical events altered by natural decay or careless time travel," he explained enthusiastically.
"Our captain's Officer Tuddrussel, a really big, strong guy. He's not that smart and can be really impulsive sometimes, but he's really loyal and knows how to stick up for what's right. My other teammate and friend is Larry; he's a robot. He used to be an ambassador, but then he had to get a new job when all the countries merged together. He can be really sarcastic sometimes, but he can be really smart and good friend when you need one. Plus, he keeps us pretty well organized and keeps our equipment running better than either of us possibly could."

"Good point," Beth replied. "It's cool that you know them. 1 millionth Century? I guess that Lawn Chair Day was pointless then. I guess then I'm a living antique to you."
She had a slight point but it wasn't much of one.
((And Lawn Chair Day is an actual event on Facebook.))

Otto laughed. He seemed to enjoy talking to Beth. "Actually, to tell the truth, I'm not native to the 1 millionth century myself. I actually came from the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries," he admitted. After a pause, he suddenly frowned and glanced aside as he drummed his fingers.
"I lost my parents before I even knew them. The only things I know were from stories I heard," he explained sadly. "I spent most of my life in a run-down orphanage run by Sister Thornley--a nun who's just about as holy as a scorpion. She hated me for being a child prodigy and always punished me for reading my books." He cringed at the memory. "I hated my life there; it felt like there was no way out..."
His expression brightened a little. "And then...Tuddrussel and Larry showed up. They were going on a mission, but the accidentally appeared in my room during my time period instead. When they saw I had no one and I showed them how much I knew about history, they took me onto their team. And the rest...pardon the pun," he chuckled, "is history."

"Sorry you had to live that way, but look on the bright side you have your friends and if you hadn't been where you were you might not have met them," she offered trying to make a point. "But have you had any missions here lately?"

"Yeah... Funny how these things work out," he said with a smile.
"The History Instability Alarm's been....ah," he waved his hand in a so-so manner, "relatively quiet lately... A week or so back, we got a mission to help unite Coco Chanel with her old friend Boy Capel to start her new fashion line-up... Later, we got an alert because a young Steve Jobs lost his computer prototype, and it nearly fell into the hands of some greedy business CEO..."

"That had to have been fun. I mean you get to go back and meet all these big and important people. Heck even get to help some of them and that's kinda amazing," Beth replied with a smile.

Otto merely shrugged like it was no big deal. "Ah, just all in a day's work." Back when he first joined, what they did was possibly the most thrilling thing to him. Nowadays, it was just more or less routine, though that didn't make him love it any less.

"It's still cool," Beth replied as she opened her book again. "So anything else interesting in this world besides the fact demons attack at libraries?"

"Everything," said Otto. "Given the wide variety of worlds that connect to Dimensional Island, you can find all kinds of people living on this island! Superheroes, psychics, demons, aliens, medieval soldiers, talking animals--you name it."

Beth smiled.
"Sweet. I'm betting life is interesting too," she offered. "I guess you could say each day is another adventure. You never know where you're going or who you might meet."
And the one place where I'm not completely insane, she added mentally.

"Well, things are never boring here; I can say that much," Otto chuckled.
((Should I just bring another character in to meet them? 'Cause I'm not sure the plot's getting anywhere. XD; ))

((Go for it. Then again I usually don't have a plot of any sort))
"That's better than my life back home," Beth replied before looking down.

It was around this time that a WHIMSICAL VILLAGER wandered into the library. After recovering in the Void City Hospital from his near-fatal wound, the old VAGABOND became a VILLAGER of a village close to the island's central city.
Before finding the library, he'd gone through a clothing store and discovered a section of hoodies labeled "HOMESTUCK GOD TIERS". While he found the name "Homestuck" to be incredibly silly, he had purchased a blue one with a wavy wind design, with the help of a kind old lady who saw he had no money to pay with, to replace his old RAG OF SOULS. The shirt reminded him of his old fallen friend, a brave hero named John.
Snapping out of his thoughts, the villager wandered aimlessly around the library, taking in the scenes.
"It makes for a pretty interesting lifestyle, yeah," Otto said as they continued their conversation. "But you tend to meet a lot of...quite frankly, weird people, too..."
