It was a beautiful day at the Boardwalk. The ocean waters were calm, the sky was clear and bright, and beach-goers happily filed through the carnival, partaking in the various games and rides it had to offer. The sights, the sounds, the overall warm and cheery atmosphere... it all just seemed so fun and inviting.
Lucky pricks.
Not too far from a pizza stand, an albatross sat on a wall. His eyes were trained on the customers, waiting and watching for some klutz to drop their food. Much to his chagrin, it was taking a while. Watching these sunburned pigs scarf down their lunches was getting aggravating, only serving to remind him of his own empty stomach, and every time he heard some snot-nosed brat scream "Mommy! Look at that huge bird!" made him wish he still had fingers to flip them off with. He was starting to consider rooting through a trash can, despite the idea disgusting him to no end, but he would've rather settled for someone's rotten leftovers than fish some slimy cephalopod out of the ocean.
He let out a sigh, which came out sounding more like a soft trill. He probably should've been out and about doing something useful, but... darn it, he was hungry. And tired. And more than anything, he just needed time to think about what he was doing.

He almost didn't notice the shadow falling across him until the paws wrapped around his body. "So cute!" The albatross finds himself being hugged to a rather soft chest before he can get a good look at the face of his captor. It is distinctly feline, with brown spots and stripes in several places on the tan fur, and, surprisingly, smiling warmly at him. "Rod, you should get a look at this!"
She, as the cat is certainly female, turns to look over her shoulder before her breath catches, and she turns to look around everywhere, confused. "Rod? Where did you go?"

"AWK-!!!" Immediately upon being grabbed, the albatross started kicking and squirming furiously, straining to pry his wings free and crane his neck to peck at his captor. All the while, he brayed and shrieked squawked in enraged protest, quickly spiraling into an ear-piercing racket. Who this obnoxious furry chick was or what her deal was were the least of his problems. All the bird wanted was for her to FREAKING LET GO OF HIM.

"...wow, you're noisy." She bops him on top of the head with a finger, moving an arm from around him to do so. "Say, have you seen a fox around here? I'll give you some bread if you did."

Clearly still irritated, the albatross freed one of his wings and flapped it in a desperate attempt to pull away from the cat. It wasn't really working, but he at least managed to smack her a couple times with the oversized appendage, and his frustrating inability to escape only made him squawk louder.
Eventually, though, the albatross fell silent. His body was tense as he did his best to contain his anger, breathing slowly but shakily through his nasal tubes. As he mentally calmed down, he found himself questioning why this weirdo was asking a bird about a missing friend. Who in their right mind would ask a bird for that kind of help, even on this crazy island?
Well, he certainly didn't have an answer, but once he managed to contain his temper, he could at least prove that she wasn't asking a dumb bird a dumb question for nothing.
"Put me down."

"Not until you answer my-" The cat suddenly stops, as if realizing something. "...oh. You can speak? I was just gonna have you be a little puppet." She carefully reaches into the side pocket of her backpack, pulling out a blueberry muffin. "Hungry? You looked like you were eyeing food there, for a bit. At least, until I grabbed you."

"Yeah, I can speak. Let's all stop and marvel at this completely unprecedented phenomenon. Walt Disney, eat your *** damn heart out," the albatross responded bitterly. "Now can you PLEASE let go of me? I don't know where your- Wait, you were gonna do WHAT with me?!"
When the cat girl pulled out a muffin, the albatross eyed it suspiciously. The last thing he wanted was to look desperate, so he hesitated for a moment and kept a stern appearance, never letting slip how enticing it looked and how starving he really was. "Uh... Yeah. Sure."
Take what you can get, he figured. Whatever it took to avoid dumpster diving. Again.

"Okay, then!" She places the muffin on its cup upon the railing, making sure it wouldn't fall over before letting go of the bird. "So, I feel as though we got off on the wrong paw. My name is Selena. Selena Madaki!" She holds out her padded hand, smiling warmly.

The albatross sighed with relief as he was released, perching upon the wall again. He was just about to lean over and start pecking at the muffin when the cat formally introduced herself and offered a paw. In the long, drawn out silence that followed, he just stared at her paw, confused and deadpan. Was she expecting a handshake? You kind of needed HANDS for that, and while her capability to deliver on that was dubious at best, his was even more so.
Instead, he simply looked up, casting his flat expression at Selena directly. "Dallas."

She blinks a couple times before tilting her head in curiosity, letting her hand fall back to her side. "...like the city?"

"Eh. City's alright," Dallas muttered before scooping up a bite of muffin. "Haven't been back there in a while. Been sticking to the ocean for the past couple months."

She opens her mouth to correct him or rephrase her question, but thinks better of it, instead reaching over and scratching the top of his head gently. "Really? What's that been like?"

"Well, I- Hey!" Dallas backed up a bit at Selena's touch, looking affronted and angry. "No more touchies, okay?"
Returning to his muffin, Dallas explained, "Anyway... I guess I miss the city to some extent, but I can't really go back there... the way things are now."

"Oh." She scratches her cheek, frowning slightly. "Sorry to hear that... and sorry if I upset you. You're just... really cute."

Dallas merely sighed at Selena's comment, then resumed eating his muffin until it was reduced to crumbs and a wrapper. Once he was finished, he looked back up at the cat and flatly said, "Well, thanks for the food. I guess I oughta get going now."
