Since I've seen this mistake being made on the board a lot, and as a fan it irritates me, I wanna clear something up.
The anime was not based on the cards. The manga was not based on the cards. The cards, known as Duel Monsters in Japan, were based on the manga. The manga came first.
On that note, and I don't expect non-fans to believe me, the anime is NOT just about cards. The manga is even less about cards. I don't know about the dub, never seen, but while the franchise does use the cards as a plot point to revolve around past the Yami no Game/Season 0 arc, it is not about cards. In fact, the Dawn of the Duel/Egypt arc of the manga apparently had little to do with cards. The whole gold duel disk/Dia Dank thing was anime only.
It is not a franchise made to advertise the cards, although I won't deny it helped with it once they were made real. The cards came after. AFTER. It was NOT made to advertise! It's a real pet peeve of mine that people think the cards came first. They didn't. Do not pass the series off as "a blatent advertising ploy"!
And on that note, wanna know why the series shifted to a card focus? Cause that aspect of the manga became popular so Kazuki chose to go with that! He gave in to public demand! The series was actually supposed to be about ALL games, but he let it shift in a more fan friendly direction!
SO PLEASE STOP SAYING THAT THE ANIME WAS BASED ON THE CARDS!
/end rant.

Actually when we talk about it that way (or at least when I do), we're mainly talking about the way the Abridged series is written.

Actually, you weren't the one that sparked this rant. Someone said that "it's not a rip off of YGO just cause its based on cards" or something of the sort. For one, I don't run around calling shows rip offs of each other, I was rather assaulted by that by being both a Pokemon and Digimon fan (both fandoms tend to accuse the other franchise of being a rip off. In actuality, the digimon digital pet came first, than the Pokemon game. The Pokemon anime came before the Digimon anime but I think the V-Tamer manga which is actually based around the V-Pets of Digimon came before the Pokemon anime.) so I don't run around calling a franchise a rip off of another.
But the comment clearly stated that the person thought the YGO anime was based on the cards. I blame 4Kids and their tendency to market. *sigh* So many people completely ignore the show thanks to 4Kids making it about nothing more than 30 minute commercials by yoinking character depth and such.
Granted, I'm willing to admit GX was a marketing ploy. Wasn't written by Kazuki (didn't even start as a manga for that matter), went from plot to "lulz lets have Duel Academy lulz" and focused FAR too much on themed decks. Basically I think Konami (?) wanted to advertise and got a glorified fanfiction made out of it. *mutters*
5Ds wasn't headed up by Kazuki either...

A lot of people say the same about Pokemon. The games aren't based off of the show, the show's based off the games. GOD DAMN YOU, 4KIDS!
