He's trying to hold it back, Souji thought to himself. He clenched his sword tightly, his knuckles turning white. Minato was reaching for his Evoker. The situation already seemed to be going downhill. K1 didn't really know what to do other than return Brigid to his COMP. They wouldn't need her here. Since he couldn't directly fight the Shadow if things went downhill, he stayed behind Minato and Souji.
"Atem, we're your friends..." K1 said. It wasn't in a particularly loud voice, though, and probably went unheard.

Atem, however, did hear. It wasn't the greatest thing for him to hear with his psyche in the knot it was. Thoughts of having to protect them because they were his friends flitted across his surface mind. The Shadow's glare was deeper, "You can't."
Atem remained quiet. He knew how to fight with words, he'd done so on many occasions. Anything he said would be used against him by the Shadow. He didn't have his cards, and the split had kept the weapon with Yuugi. Heck, at the moment their outfits were different, Atem was still wearing the vest number Yuugi had the night he'd been dropped here. It seemed to have developed into a Mexican stand off.
And then the Shadow noticed the gun in Minato's hand. It wasn't just any Evoker, it was the specific one that had been used to force it out during that first Dark Hour. The Shadow glared at it hard enough Atem had to look. A thought crossed Atem's mind involving a way to supress this living darkness. And the distorted black energy around the Shadow exploded. Oddly enough, it retained its human form. Mostly, as the glare it was giving was darker than humans seemed capable. The Pendant around its neck glowed and Yuugi's eyes got wider than seemed possible.
"Atem, no!"
The Shadow threw its hand forward as if it was reaching for the Pharaoh's neck, the intense energy coming off it causing the cloak to flutter. Atem caught the movement out of the corner of his eye in time to see the Shadow's outstretched hand. The "tattoo" that took the place of the eye on the crown lit up with the same colors that had caused the wall to vanish and give the group a short cut. The dark energy flying off the Shadow was oppressingly strong, more than comparable to when a Shadow went beserk.
"Mind Crush!" shouted the Shadow, and Atem's eyes scarcely had time to widen in realization before he collapsed into a heap.
And Yuugi was running forward, Nefertum's card out with speed that it had never really been clear the teen could manage, "And it appears 'I' have to be saved by my partner yet again," it spoke in an unnervingly dark and distorted voice before the energy coming off it finally forcing a loss in form. Yuugi braced himself for the impact of the energy... and managed to not get knocked down by it despite his proximity.
The transformation was far quicker than had occured for Yuugi's shadow. And this entity seemed less... formed. The basic shape was roughly the same. Calling it black was still an insult. It still had the werewolf-like legs, but the malformed hooves created a better illusion of a dog's back legs. The "claws" formed from the hooves, however, were sharper and longer.
The werewolf legs were a bit meatier than the painfully thin one's Yuugi's Shadow had possessed, but the front of the thighs had four golden spikes coming out from under the blackness, and they appeared painfully sharp. The upper body kept the comparison to a horse, and the arms were still proportionally thin despite being more muscled. The hands were formed more like hands rather than the digging paws of some mammals. Instead the silver "claws" were like the mutant Wolverine, except there were four as they came up from the top of the knuckles rather than between them.
The head had almost nothing in common with an anteater like Yuugi's had. It was almost all jackal, the ears tipped in gold caps. The Eye of Ra that Atem was known to sport during Mind Crushes was there and constantly shimmering as it did during his attacks of the same name. He had no weapons, but an extremely visible "barrier" of electricity sparked around it. It was, perhaps unsurprisingly, shaped like an inverted pyramid. And no one would know this at first, but it would protect the main Shadow. Without someone like Rise around, they couldn't know this without trial and error.
And the way it protected would be to counter every attack with Mudo. The Shadow would still be harmed by the full force of each attack, but every one would be countered with Mudo...
The influx of dark energy drew back towards the shadow. It was clear the fight had started... and Atem remained collapsed on the floor. The only indication that he lived was the presence of the Shadow, it was to dark to see the rising and falling of his chest and no human had the ability to sense the dangerously high heart rate...

And that was time for Souji and Minato to both rush into the battle. Souji crushed the tarot card in his hand and summoned Alice. He stared up at the form of Atem's shadow. Okay. That barrier was going to be a problem. Hopefully Atem's shadow wasn't like Mitsuo, otherwise this could take a while, and it didn't seem like Atem was doing too well.
K1 summoned Lakshmi from the COMP. She could heal everyone while Cerberus went on the attack. Hopefully...
Minato pulled the Evoker out of its holster and held it up to his head. He was shaking again. Why was he shaking? He'd done this numerous times before without any problems. Why now? He took a deep breath, and steadied it enough that he could pull the trigger. The familiar blue mist swirled around Minato, and formed into Orpheus, and then...
And then all hell broke loose.
A splitting pain wrenched through Minato's skull. He grabbed his head like he had a massive migraine, and began to stumble. This was just like that first night... No, it felt different.
Orpheus roared above Minato's form, and let out a loud screech, like microphone feedback. The persona's form began to flicker, and it looked like it was going to disappear. But in fact, it was quite the opposite. And Minato realized that he couldn't control Orpheus. It was like he was someone without the Potential: his Persona had gone rogue. And it was about to attack him.

Moments before Minato managed to stabilize the gun, Nefertum's form had appeared above Yuugi. Yuugi pointed towards Atem, "Make sure it doesn't kill him!"
The Persona shot towards Atem, letting the staff hover between its hands and casting Dia on the Pharaoh. Yuugi wasn't referring to Atem's shadow with "it", either, although that's what the circumstances indicated. He was referring to the darkness Atem's mind was trapped in. He knew what Mind Crush did... he only hoped the Pharaoh could quickly reassemble the pieces of his heart. The way he had collapsed... it was the same thing that Atem had done to Kaiba. Even if Kaiba had deserved the attack, Atem didn't. Was this what Atem really wanted to do? Act like Yami Bakura?
Yuugi ripped the sword out of the makeshift sheath. In that the former belt choker fell to the ground with the force he had the sword drawn. He was acting far more on emotion than logic. This was somehow his fault. When he was in danger, Atem always came to his rescue. But he had hesitated. He hadn't tried to encourage the Pharaoh to face his Shadow. It was only rage that was holding back tears. Rage at himself. The thoughts that had been going through his head lately, had Atem been feeling them too? And yet he couldn't step forward and admit them. If he had...
As the seconds passed for those thoughts to occur, they provided some kind of shield against Orpheus' scream. He only barely heard it. He jerked to a stop and turned around. Minato's Persona too!? Were they going to have to fight two beserk shadows!?
Perhaps oddly, Atem's Shadow seemed more concerned about Orpheus than the other combatants. In that it targeted the rogue Persona with what looked like a few rings of purplish-black energy. If it worked, which considering the berserker mode the Persona was in probably would, it would lower its attack. Atem's Shadow had just used Tarunda on the Persona.

Minato's Evoker clattered to the floor. It was no good, he couldn't control Orpheus. Something had gone horribly wrong, and now he couldn't control it. He couldn't even keep a hold on the Evoker. He was practically useless in this fight. Not only that, but he had to worry about Orpheus himself attacking him.
The berserk Persona attempted to bring the large lyre slamming down on Minato's head, but he was able to dodge out of the way. Before Orpheus could attempt to attack again, though. Cerberus jumped onto the Persona in an attempt to knock him to the ground.
"Minato! Get a hold of yourself!" K1 yelled.
"I'm trying! He's not responding!" Minato climbed back to his feet. "There's something wrong with him!"
Souji glanced K1 and Minato's way before returning to the battle with Shadow Atem. "Keiichi, take down Orpheus! I'll work on Shadow Atem!"
K1 didn't have time to question this thought process, as Orpheus had managed to throw Cerberus off and was about to come around for another swing.

It wasn't bad enough Atem was lost in the maze of his own psyche. It wasn't even bad enough that it resembled his mind room prior to regaining his memories. It was that his Shadow had a presence there as well. Running into the suppressed emotions had given them voice in the world of his Mind Crush. He was having to face it, and if he lost here it wouldn't just be the death of his body. He'd be lost for all eternity.
The concern over that had caused his physical self's heartrate to greatly increase. His blood pressure probably wasn't doing to well either. The Shadow of his mind had him cornered, and the only time he could remember being more fearful was when he lost Yuugi due to his own actions.... he looked down at the objects in his hand for a split moment. It wouldn't be easy getting these back together with his Shadow pursuing him here.
Yuugi hesitated briefly, and was more grateful for Souji's suggestion than he could have expressed in the best of times. K1 had two demons, right? He wasn't sure what the storage abilities of the COMP were, but he hoped the teen could handle it. Minato's Persona seemed to be maintaining his form, despite the collateral damage its "weapon" was doing to the room. That had to be a good sign, right...?
Nefertum maintained position over Atem. There was nothing more it could do with Dia. Yuugi sensed this and pointed towards Atem's Shadow. Attacking with a sword seemed an unwise move with the electrical barrier. Nefertum pointed its staff and Garu fired at the Shadow. It reacted with a smirk, an impressive feat considering its appearance, despite the Garu attack hitting at full force. The reason for the smirk became evident when a spell circle laced in black appeared underneath Yuugi, accompanied by a pulse in the energy around the shield.
Thankfully the teen had a resistance to Dark skills due to his Persona. But it had started making something painfully apparent. And Yuugi felt the energy reaching out to him, but managed to shake it off with a bit of concentration evident in both he and his Persona. Neither had time to relax as the Shadow held out an open palm and a large lightning bolt shot at every person in the room save Atem. This included the mostly ininvolved K1 and Orpheus, making it more than a little clear that the Shadow was well aware of the Persona's status as a seperate battler.
"Everyone!" Yuugi shouted, wincing from the Mazionga attack but forcing himself to remain standing. It might have been touching in other circumstances. It was clear the teen was trying harder than usual, somehow reaching into parts of himself he hadn't been able to before.

The Mazionga attack didn't hurt K1 too much, at least not much more than the club from the other day had, but Orpheus and Minato both got hit fairly badly. The Persona collapsed to the ground, and Minato fell down on one knee, supporting himself with his sword, which he'd stuck in the ground on the way down. Orpheus still stayed materialized, though.
Souji frowned. Oh, this was going to be fun. Since this shadow was using Mudo skills, Alice was going to be practically useless. The best thing to do would be to keep her out long enough to block the Mudo attacks from Shadow Atem.
He rushed at Shadow Atem, sword in hand, and attempted to slash through his leg.

The attack did hit, and did an average amount of damage for what it was. But the barrier pulsed and the familiar circle appeared under Souji... only to vanish in glass like shards of energy and appear behind Shadow Atem's floating form. The Shadow waved an arm and the attack dispelled, but the reaction indicated something... Atem's Shadow wasn't immune. Yuugi winced from the few areas the lightning had hit the worse. Souji had used a sword, it had been reflected. He had used Garu, it had been reflected. This didn't bode well. The attacks seemed to hit, but they bounced back that odd ability. He felt almost as if something were clawing at his soul every time it hit, almost as if said soul was trying to leave everytime it hit. Part of his being seemed to prevent the full feeling, as well. He wasn't sure how he knew that, but it seemed he was resistant to it. He shuddered at the thought of not being.
"Nefertum, heal Minato-kun!" Yuugi shouted, once more thinking about his friends before himself. The Persona looked up from its stance in front of Atem and held out its hands in the familiar pose. It was likely a split second before the Mazionga attack ripped through the troops again. And with Orpheus' current condition, poor Minato was probably going to be in a very familiar kind of blinding pain...
And Yuugi didn't fare much better off. He winced, one knee giving as he fell into a kneeling position. As he'd ordered his Persona to heal Minato, he'd been making his way to Atem's mostly still form. He was only a foot or so away from the other teen, but he didn't think he could stand right now. -----
Atem winced as the fist came rushing at him. He knew how much damage he, and by result likely his shadow, could do. He didn't favor fighting with fists, but he could beat the crap out of someone if he wanted. Some of his earliest adventures with Yuugi, before even he was fully aware of himself let alone Yuugi, had shown that.
"Pharaoh, pull yourself together!"
Atem jerked his eyes opened and looked towards... Mahad!? Mana stood right behind him, and they had taken battle stances.
"How...?" Atem wasn't used to being completely lost like this.
"This is your heart! Your memories can help you!" Mahad stated. Atem looked down and realized two of the "pieces of his heart" had formed into Mahad and his apprentice, "Work on getting yourself back together, we'll fight here," he punctuated his words by firing a blast of dark electric energy at the Shadow.
Atem opened his mouth to argue, but it faded to a soft if somewhat bitter grin. This fiasco had been caused by him being unable to accept that his friends could fight just as well as he. He nodded and resumed his attempts to get his heart back into one piece. It seemed to be going better now...

Souji breathed a sigh of relief before realizing that even with Alice, this fight would take much too long. And with that Mazionga skill, Minato wouldn't last much longer.
"Fine," Souji said. He pulled out his tarot card and flipped it to change his persona. Alice dissipated and the image was replaced by that of a skull faced angel. Upon breaking the card, the skull faced angel appeared flying above Souji. It blew its trumpet, and the trumpet fired a much more powerful blast of wind than Nefertum had done so far.
The Dia from Nefertum had come almost not soon enough, as it healed Minato just before the electricity came rushing through everyone once again. Orpheus seemed to be just barely hanging on. On the small bright side, he was too injured to attack Minato now.
"Lakshmi, get over there and heal him!" K1 ordered. The goddess-like demon ran over to Minato and got to work using Diarama on him.

That one actually hurt. Shadow Atem, that is. The Garudyne ripped into the Shadow. The force of the wind was enough to blast it into the wall, although it was more the fairly confined battle space the group had than anything like critical damage. The expected result of the barrier occured, but the magic circle didn't even get to fully form around Souji before shattering into the familiar glass shard energy.
Minato wasn't holding on, but Yuugi had to accept that he couldn't do any good if he got himself knocked unconscious. He gestured towards Nefertum, and the Persona cast Dia on its surface self. Yuugi jumped up and began running towards Atem. He didn't know how much time he had until he got tagged again. He didn't even bother taking his sword, it was weighing him down. As such the weapon lay abandoned where he had been. He was maybe two steps from the Pharaoh now.
He didn't have to worry too much this time, however. As the Shadow shifted tactics ever so slightly in order to completely take care of one of the combatants. As such, the ridiculously large lightning bolt that fired from the Persona's open palm hit only one opponent. Ziodyine shot straight at Orpheus... -----
"Mahad, Mana, pull back! Don't get yourself killed!"
Mana was trying her best to maintain a shield on Mahad. The magician priest was not having the world's greatest luck with his continued attacks on the Shadow. Mahad spoke while trying to concentrate his energy, "Better us than you!"
Atem shook his head, "No! I lost you once!"
The Pharaoh had paused on the puzzle of his heart. It was almost done, only a handful of pieces remained, but he was having trouble fitting them in. He jerked as he felt a hand on his shoulder, and all but whirled around in shock. Shimon had his hands on his shoulder.
"We're already dead, but you aren't. You'll still alive."
Atem realized all six of his priests were there. And at Shimon's words... he turned towards the Shadow, who was beginning to morph its shape. He knew that kind of reaction... whatever it was doing, it was getting stronger.
"Don't throw your life away," Priest Seto stated flatly, somehow combining the expression with urgency. He was quickly headed over to where Mahad and Mana were fighting.
"You're not the only one fighting," stated Karim.
Shada handed a piece of the puzzle that had skittered away to Atem, "You exist in two times as it is now. You have to choose one. Before now I would have encouraged you to travel to the Land of the Dead where we reside now..."
Atem blinked, turning towards the puzzle and putting in the piece. His eyes widened when he realized one piece was missing. Seven glowing pieces framed it. The one he just placed in pulsed as Isis spoke.
"You have to choose... and only your full self can make the choice. Past, or present? Who is most dear to you... we know, but you must make the choice. You will be saying farewell to one or the other..." she looked almost sad, "That decision will fill in that hole in your heart..."
"MANA!"
Atem jerked his head and saw Mana get launched backwards into a stone wall. He looked down at the Puzzle and saw one of the seven pieces dim significantly. Priest Seto took a defensive posture, "If even one of your memories die, they'll all die! Get your ass into gear!"

That last attack was what did it. Orpheus faded away, but not without causing immense pain to Minato as he did it. Having your persona electrocuted to death, or ripped apart, or just plain killed, even if it wasn't "permanent", was not a pleasant experience. The scream Minato let out as Orpheus "died", because of this, was not fairly pleasant either. K1 winced, but the threat of Orpheus was gone, so at least he could help the battle with Shadow Atem.
He lifted his COMP...
"Don't, K1!" Souji yelled. "I can handle it." He lifted his hand again and Trumpeter fired another Garudyne attack at Shadow Atem.

Atem felt... frozen. Frozen with fear. It was not a feeling he knew well, and he couldn't even recall if he'd ever truly known it. If he wasn't in derailed mind panic mode, he might have found it humourous how much the priest that had once held the Millenium Rod really did resemble his present life. Even if both of them would deny it with every fiber of their being.
But he knew Seto was right. He could even see a crack trying to form in one of the seven pieces in the Puzzle. If his memory of Mana died, he would lose all of his memories. Maybe he wouldn't die, he'd survived the loss before, but the effort it had taken to regain his memories were not something he wanted to go through again. Things might not go as well this time. And if he lost his ancient memories, what of the ones he had gained with his... with Yuugi?
"Don't plan on throwing your life away again?" Seto stated darkly at Mahad, who hadn't run after Mana despite an obvious desire to do so.
"I'll do what I have to in order to protect the Pharaoh. But you know as well as I do that my ba and ka rest with the one he cares for the most," Mahad fired off another blast of energy, but it didn't seem to do anything. -----
Yuugi collapsed to his knees by the Pharaoh right as Minato screamed. He jerked his head to the side, and had to force his attention back to Atem. Somehow... somehow he knew the Pharaoh was on a precipice. He looked at the Puzzle, it pulsed with a small light. Almost as if it were calling something. Yuugi looked at the others. He was going to have to explain why he stepped out of the fight like this later, but right now...
Nefertum vanished. Yuugi didn't want to expend the energy to maintain his Persona. He grabbed the Pharaoh's hand, "Atem! Can you heare me!? Fight! I..." his voice dropped down, likely an unnecessary measure with the chaos going on around them, "... I don't think I can lose you...." -----
"ATEM!"
Atem jerked his head to the side. A small glow was forming in the one empty spot of the puzzle of his heart. Yuugi was standing there... no. In the distance. And he didn't seem all there. He looked at his priests, and then at Yuugi's figure. That's what they meant. Past or present. He looked at the Shadow.
"Is it such a bad thing to rely on others?" -----
The Shadow that Atem's friends were fighting flickered for a moment. The barrier dropped for a split second, long enough for Garudyne to impact with it. It had barely recovered from the last Garudyne when it was thrown into the wall again. This time with more force. It slid do the ground and the darkness drew in on itself, revealing Shadow Atem's "human" form. He barely seemed conscious. With the chaos immediately gone, it was likely the focus turned to Yuugi, who had by this time put both his hands around the Pharaoh's own.
"...really has the power of unity, prove it! You're always telling me to not give up before the fight is over. So don't!" -----
Atem glanced at Seto, "...is it really okay?"
Seto narrowed his eyes. Was the Pharaoh really asking him? He'd once deemed him worthy to hand the crown over to him. In a moment rare for either of Seto's lives, he softened his gaze, "You screwed up once. Don't go dragging us down in the afterlife by doing it again."
Atem gave a soft smile. That was Seto's way of doing things. He glanced at Yuugi's figure and then at his priests and Mana, "Thank you... maybe being thrown to this Island wasn't such a bad thing after all..." he turned as the missing piece of his heart puzzle filled in... -----
And his eyes opened in the waking world. Which lead to an extremely cute but awkard can of worms moment as Yuugi all but tackled the laying Pharaoh in a hug, "You're o-okay!" he said through sobs, not even caring that the Puzzle was digging into his chest.
Atem blushed a bit. Unlike Yuugi, he was aware everyone was staring at them... "Um... partner..."

This was about the time that it hit K1 like a brick what Yuugi and Atem's relationship was. Oh, they were way more than just good friends for sure. Especially the way Atem was blushing... it was a damn good thing that Midori wasn't there at the moment, otherwise...
Minato just gave a small smile. It was kind of sweet.
Souji sighed and pressed his hand to his face. "While this is nice and all, Atem's shadow is still here." And it can still go berserk at any moment... oh the fun of someone's emotions having sentience.

Yuugi jerked up as Souji spoke. Right. They were there, and... his face lit up like a proverbial Christmas tree. Atem looked a little nervous as well, but he climbed to his feet. Well, that wasn't going to be easy to live down... and somehow it didn't seem like trying to tapdance around it was going to ever work again. He glanced over at his Shadow. Awkwardness aside, things weren't under control just yet. He noticed Souji's exasperation. Things were under more control than Souji realized. He hadn't been involved in the Mind Crush, he didn't know that there was little more to do in this situation.
Atem walked forward and stood less than a foot from his Shadow. The next statement was humorously reminscient of one of Souji's friends, "If you're me, than you aren't going to give up that easily."
Shadow Atem opened its eyes and looked up at Atem's harsh gaze. It had the pained expression many a Shadow got after it got its butt handed to it. It was more than aware no hand was going to be offered, and it stood up on its own. It remained quiet, but was looking Atem in the eyes. Yuugi was trying to figure out how to hide his face without being obvious about it. Wasn't having any luck with it, but he got to his feet.
"You're right. I fight like I do because I'm afraid of losing my friends. But I think we both know that it isn't a bad thing to rely on them from time to time. Right?"
The shadow looked away. It was... kind of entertaining. Atem had completely exerted an animalistic dominance over his Shadow. In character, but entertaining nonetheless. As if the comparisons to Kanji weren't already there. The Shadow turned its head back towards Atem before fading in the familiar glass like shards. Temu's card floated down to Atem before the teen felt a wave of exhaustion wash over him and he fell to his knees, having to use his hands to avoid completely collapsing.
"Atem!" Yuugi shouted, taking a few steps forward before suddenly remembering the little display earlier. What little control he'd gotten over his blush was lost and he stuttered as he tried to continue, "A-a-are you.. o-okay?" Oh lord he was never living this down.
"I...Fine..." Atem managed to lie. And not with his usual confident flair. The teen was barely conscious.
Yuugi walked over and extended his hand. He wondered when the Puzzle was going to connect them again, "Seta-kun, maybe we should get out of here?" he requested after seeing the look on Atem's face.
(OOC: Don't forget that Yuugi's sword is still laying several feet back from where Atem woke up at. Like I tried to do. >_> If no one thinks to grab it it'll be left there.)

Souji nodded. "Don't forget to get your sword before we leave, though." He turned to K1. "Could you summon Kikuri-Hime and get us out of here?"
K1 sighed. "Give me a second," he said before walking over to Minato to help him off of the ground. He outstretched a hand, which the teen gratefully took. "Are you alright?"
"...Y-Yeah." Minato said. He started walking over to the rest of the group, leaving his Evoker on the ground. K1 picked it up.
"Hey, Minato. You forgot this," K1 said. Minato turned around and looked at K1 before walking over and taking the Evoker from him. Minato looked pretty beat. They needed to get out of there ASAP, especially with the condition Atem and Minato were both in. K1 pulled out his COMP, and with a few button presses, returned both of his demons to his COMP before summoning Kikuri-Hime. "Kikuri-Hime, can you take us out from here?"
"...I can try. This area is right under the one we came in from, so it should be possible," Kikuri-Hime said.
"Then please try," Souji said. Kikuri-Hime nodded, and began to concentrate, trying to thrust the group out of the TV World.
