Full Name: Clockwork Keykeeper Doll #1
Nicknames: Eriol
Age: Several centuries old
Height: 4’ 2”
Weight: 134 lbs
Gender: Genderless, but appears, sounds, and identifies with male
Race: Clockwork Doll
Alliance: Neutral, as in, he can’t decide what he is. His random fits of hysteria don’t help with this matter at all.
Home: Originally China, now considers his home where Himitsu is.
Franchise: n/a
Physical Description: Appears to be a boy made out of wood. Besides the head, which is a perfectly carved sphere, his whole body appears to be large blocks of wood that have been attached in different areas to create a doll. All of these blocks have been painted skin color to look even more like a boy. The hands and feet are just large blocks of wood, however, the hands have opposable wood fingers, while the feet do not have any toes at all, just being blocks of wood. Like a clockwork toy, Eriol has a bronze wind-up key in his back that is constantly spinning and has to be rewound every century. The large clockwork head is the most complex part of his body. His artificial grey eyes, while they do not blink, can see, allowing Eriol to see where he is going. His mouth also moves and can actually mouth words instead of just opening and closing. Of course, he has a voice box so he actually sounds like he's speaking. He has shoulder length blond hair too, and it's all real human hair. Unlike the other keykeepers, who have rounded ears, he has pointed, triangle shaped ears, or he did once, anyway. He actually lost his ears years ago, and the space where they once were is covered by his blond hair. He no longer wears the yellow bird hat the Creator gave him centuries ago, having discarded it upon deciding the Creator was no longer his master. Because of injuries sustained on the Island, Eriol has lost almost the entire left side of his face, and if he were to remove the black eyepatch he now wears, there would be a large gaping hole where his eye used to be. For clothing, he wears traditional Chinese children’s clothes, like the other keykeepers, though he’s gotten into a habit of wearing an apron when he cleans now.
Weapons: Eriol’s original weapon was a bronze key he received from his Creator, a magical clockwork key that could conduct and weaponize lightning. The actual key itself was damaged to near beyond repair due to various events, but Himitsu, Eriol’s new master (elaborated on in History) was able to repair it. He no longer uses it much for battle; in fact, he doesn’t even have it himself most of the time. Himitsu usually hangs on to it, because Eriol tends to regress back to his old self just a bit when around the key.
In absence of the key, Eriol uses a broom. Hey, he likes cleaning.
Abilities/Powers: Eriol can’t actually use magic, as, as an automaton, he’s devoid of a true life, and only things with true life possess the magical aura needed to cast spells. Unlike things with a true life that are somehow devoid of a magical aura, though, this doesn’t mean that he is unaffected by magic at all, quite the contrary.
This is worth mentioning because, despite being devoid of a magical aura, Eriol can sense magical creatures and auras, which is a rarity among automatons. And not only that, but his spiritual senses are top notch, despite the fact he possesses no true life. Eriol’s two brothers have this same ability.
The only unique ability that Eriol possesses that his brothers don’t (it was removed in later dolls after the Creator realized that meant Eriol could escape any seals placed upon him) is the ability to emit a small magic cancelling field. It’s not a large one, and it’s useless against large scale spells, but against, say, a paper seal, like those used to seal away evil spirits, it’s very effective.
Skills: He’s good at cleaning. :3 As in, he’d probably be able to clean a large mansion on his own, and make it spotless. What can I say, he likes cleaning.
Personality: Most people only knew Eriol as the destructive, more than slightly insane doll. In truth, that personality was mostly brought on by the Creator. Without the Creator’s influence, Eriol revealed himself to be rather similar to Yui in personality. He gets flustered easily, and is always rather polite. He always seems to be cheerful, except in the most serious of situations. And he LOVES cleaning.
History: Eriol was created by a reclusive man known only as the Creator, a man who had travelled to China to learn the secrets of making the inanimate alive. At first, the Creator was delighted at his creation. And then Eriol started showing destructive tendencies. It wasn’t the destruction that bothered the Creator. It was the lack of regret at such an act that bothered him.
The fact remained that Eriol bothered the Creator, who had begun to believe that Eriol was his punishment from God for meddling in His domain. He kept the doll around for the testing of various parts, but he did not treat it much like a person. More like furniture. Eriol tried to help out as much he could, but eventually, he was forgotten as the Creator made his second doll, this one named Kerro. But Kerro did not have a true life either. Kerro was doted on much like Eriol was until the Creator began work on his third doll. Kerro, meanwhile, befriended Eriol.
During the time between Kerro’s creation and the birth of the third doll, the valley was repeatedly attacked. Kerro was even injured while on an errand one day (Eriol was not allowed to leave the home; he needed to be on hand at all times should the Creator need to test a new part) by an invader. It was at this point that the Creator designed weapons for the dolls to carry: small keys that could form into fully functional weapons that channeled different elements. It’s rumored that he actually did not design the keys themselves, and instead obtained them from someone else. In any case, Eriol had been gifted with a bronze key that could manipulate lightning.
Somehow or another, Kerro managed to convince the Creator to let Eriol wander the village, and Kerro took Eriol out to explore the sights. Then one day, the two were called back to the Creator’s home by one of the Creator’s animate clockwork birds. He had finally finished his third doll, Yui. And Yui was perfect. Yui was given a gold key to use to defend himself, and his hat had a rabbit motif. The rabbit was the Creator’s personal symbol, and Eriol quickly realized that he would be thrown away. Eriol still stayed around the house, but as he watched the Creator dote more and more on Yui and not at all on Eriol and Kerro, Eriol began to snap. And one day, he finally did. Eriol, who had been trying his hardest to get the Creator to even look at him with the same love and compassion he did Yui, finally decided that the only way to get any attention from the Creator was through violence. Eriol went berserk and slaughtered many of the townspeople. Only Kerro managed to stop Eriol, by freezing his feet to the ground. None of Yui’s attacks had worked, Eriol just dissipating them with lightning each time. Once Eriol was detained, the Creator decided all three dolls were too dangerous to live. Even Yui had seemed a bit off during the battle. And Yui had proved himself to be just like Kerro at that time as well. Those decades of work had gone to waste. The Creator called Yui, Kerro, and Eriol to him, and Yui and Kerro he managed to get to stand still long enough that he could unwind them. Eriol did not, though, and the Creator had to resort to spell tags to restrain him long enough to unwind the doll.
Eriol stayed asleep for nearly three centuries before being awoken by a foolish child who had gotten lost. Eriol destroyed the child, and then turned his rage upon Yui and Kerro, or at least, Kerro. Yui was no longer within the catacombs the Creator had placed them within before the man had run away back to Europe. So instead Eriol turned his rage upon Kerro’s still lifeless body, and slaughtered the doll in its sleep, finally tearing out the wind up key that powered it.
The century mainly consisted of Eriol chasing Yui all over the world. Somehow or another, though, the three clockwork dolls, including Kerro’s still broken body, were pulled to the Island. Eriol is still not quite sure how it happened, only that he woke up inside of a church, which he converted into his home. Several events followed, starting with Eriol being chased from his new home, and ending with a severely broken doll and his similarly broken dead brother being found outside the ruins of the Hospital by a woman known as Himitsu. Himitsu took Eriol to her shop, and somehow managed to convince the doll that the Creator was scum for treating him in such a way. Eriol found himself working at the shop, mainly cleaning, and never accepting any pay. He now felt that Himitsu was his master, and that he deserved to work for her. His personality mellowed out quite a bit once he started working for Himitsu; the removed pressure of the Creator caused his personality to substantially change. Eriol is now completely happy with working for Himitsu, and wouldn’t trade it for anything. As long as she doesn’t double-cross him, anyway. But he’s sure she won’t.
Other: Since he's completely made out of wood (not counting the clockwork skeleton on the inside of his body), he's weak to fire, mold, and any other traditional weaknesses of wooden objects. For this reason, he has to be repaired every so often. He can repair himself, but it takes time.
Even though Eriol’s body is almost completely wood and metal, there is a small part that seems strange compared to the rest of it. Specifically, it’s his heart. The hearts of the dolls the Creator made are supposedly stolen from the chests of dragons. It’s just a folktale spoken of often in the valley the Creator lived in…
…maybe.
