Full Name Cain, General of Bel
Nicknames: Naoya, CAIN (COMP User Name)
Age: 25
Height: ? (Tall)
Weight: ? (Average due to muscle, technically slightly underweight)
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Alliance: Chaotic Evil
Home: Palace of Bel, Demon Realm
Franchise: Megami Ibunroku/Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor
Physical Description
The man previously known as Naoya is tall and a bit underweight. He doesn't appear that skinny, however, due to slight muscular development. His muscle weighs him in at normal, but when taken into account he is still a bit below the norm. He is often described as looking dark, evil, creepy, and/or psychotic. He appears more so than he did around three months ago since his "brother" (technically cousin) ascended the Throne of Bel. He is rather pale, a result of not going out much in his life before and having spent the majority of the past three months in the sunless Demon Realm.
His harsh and narrow eyes are colored the red of blood. They carry well his most common expression, that of a harsh mirth, like one might expect from an amused serial killer. He was always known for his dark smirks, but these days he wears more of a flat and dangerous amusement. He is still known for the rare toothed grin, but unlike his life prior it is a sign of dangerous things to come. It usually means blood is about to be spilled. He has another somewhat common expression, a flat and unreadable regard. It is comparable to that of a barely obedient wolf, and it is only given to the King of Bel, Abel.
He has silver/grey hair with tinges of steel blue that fades to a slightly darker shade near the tips. It does not appear to be kept well and carries a slightly stringy appearance. Often times a large clump will fall over his right eye. In the past three months his hair has grown a bit, so his small strip-like bangs hang down to his upper collarbone. The length of his hair falls just past the base of his neck and tapers to a bit of a point with the longest of the unkempt clumps.
Cain is most often seen in a well tailored suit that allows freedom of movement while not losing the sharp look. When he returns to the Island, his suit is black with a dark grey shirt underneath. The shirt has grey buttons and the tie is the same stark black as the shirt. He wears polished black boots with steel toes. The one part of his attire that remains the same from his life before his brother became the King of Bel is his poncho-like cloak. It is considered a trademark by the royal family of Bel, and is in fact a tradition started by Cain himself.
The cloak is charcoal black and even has a hood. The hood can be pulled up, but the fact that Cain never seems to do so makes it seem more for appearance than usage. From a distance, what appears to be neon green dots surround the cloak in a swirling fashion, especially if he were to keep the cloak closed. A lot of these apparent dots rest just below his shoulders, followed by a larger grouping just below. If one looks closely, the dots are in actuality numbers embroidered the same way as old LCD displays and many modern calculators. They jumble together for an interesting effect.
A month or so after his brother ascended the Throne, Cain modified the cloak to parallel it with the newly made cloaks for both of his brothers. A black chain connects to a clasp on the right side keeps it over his shoulders even when his arms are not through the sleeves, a change from the red string from before. The cloak has wide sleeves that Cain used to use all the time. Since making the modification he uses them far less.
Weapons
Cain has one of the few remaining Communication Players (COMPs) from his home reality, as production was halted and the devices ordered destroyed due to their connection to the Tokyo Lockdown three months prior. The device was created by a game company for use as a game system slash email client slash web browser similar to the Playstation Portables of a more familiar world. Of those functions, Cain only really uses the email ability now. It is useful for maintaining contact with the King and the other human members of his court over long distances.
Even among the COMPs remaining in the Human Realm, they only have their original functionality. The modded functions that Cain relies on are accessible only to those King Abel has granted them to. As the King of Bel with direct power over Babel (the driving entity behind the modded functions), Abel can cut off any COMP's ability do do anything relating to demons. Previously modded COMPs only have empty folders where the functions once rested.
Cain also has something that any world would consider a weapon. A rather long and slender dagger with a well molded metal black hilt. The blade itself is a standard silver in color. The length of the dagger is such that if Cain were to rest the tip parallel to his longest finger, the base of the hilt would come just short of his elbow. The blade is amazingly well balanced and seems to be the work of a master weapon smith.
Abilities/Powers
Cain does not innately have anything that could be called a "power". However, he is able to access quite a few functions via the COMP, the functions he was the main source of creating. The most important function is, without contest, the Harmonizer. It allows him to fight on equal footing with paranormal beings such as demons and angels. While it was programmed to work with demons and angels from his own reality, the programming seems to work reasonably well with those of others. It also grants him the ability to cast spells as if he were a demon.
The other functions the COMP has programmed into it is the storage and summoning of demons, the Shadow Cathedral that allows demon fusing, and the Demon Auction. The latter is all but useless as Cain has control over any demons that Abel has brought under his rule (which by this point in time consists of most of them). King Abel has ordered the demons to listen to Cain unless one with a higher authority gives a differing command. While this is generally limited to Abel himself, some circumstances allow Prince Seth greater authority.
In their home dimension, Cain sees little reason to bother with the demon storage function, and only does so on the Island under Abel's orders shortly before they returned.
Skills
Cain is almost inhuman with his ability in battle tactics. While the title of General of Bel was granted at an impulse, it is not one that is unearned. He is more than able of commanding an entire army as if he has been doing so since birth. He is ruthless and has no qualms about sacrificing over half his forces to defeat the enemy. He only shows mercy at a direct command from Abel. Mercy being not killing and letting go, as certain inclinations of the man causes him to enjoy taking prisoners.
Which refers directly to one of his other skills, one that it would not be inaccurate to call a hobby. Cain has memories of every life and the skills obtained in each. The main is a master of torture, of knowing how far he can push a victim, of when they are bluffing being near death or being truthful. As an interesting side effect, he is also quite skilled in medical abilities, able to apply first aid to prolong the suffering of a victim. When one dies from the torture this man inflicts, it is almost always by his choice.
Cain is one of his world's greatest, if not the greatest computer programmers. He is more than capable of writing a word processing program with better functionality and less bugs than Microsoft Word in less than twenty-four hours. If the need were to ever come up, he could easily wipe out his Human Realm's information networks. He would be happy to do so if it proved a tactical advantage, as well.
He has great abilities with innumerable weapons, but his tendencies lean towards older ones for them having been around and in usage longer. It is another skill granted by his many lives' memories. His greatest skill is with daggers, but that merely comes from the practice he has had with the one he owns in the last three months.
Cain is multilingual enough to perhaps better be called panlingual. He can not speak every language ever spoken, but he can speak most. The languages he is most familiar with due to his current life and recent experiences are Japanese and Infernal. He can pronounce the demonic tongue with uncanny skill. He still has the "accent" any human would have with the language, but even the demons admit he is better at it than he should be for the impossible to recreate reverb and inflections the language possesses.
He is also skilled in demonic court politics, a necessity with his brother's rank.
Personality
Cain is dark and unrelenting. He previously bore the name Naoya to humor those around him. No matter what life he has been in since his first, he has always considered himself to be in truth the man named Cain. He has a downright creepy dark wisdom, the memories of hundreds of lives accumulated into the way he thinks and acts now. It is far beyond his years, and one could put him mentally older than any man living without much effort.
In truth, his personality has not changed all that much, but he has dropped the facade he once showed the world. There is no doubt to anyone he meets now that he is a sick, twisted, and at least somewhat depraved man. He maintains the trait of being goal-orientated, holding a willingness to crush those that stand in his way. He is still convinced God despises him, but that hatred has shifted a bit to smug superiority. God now has to fear him for corrupting His favored child into becoming the King of Bel.
He will still abuse and manipulate people emotionally, and he has added a tendency to do so physically to his nature. He seems more arrogant than before, but it is merely the dropping of the illusion he presented the world around him.
There is, however, one very large difference in his personality. It relates directly to how he interacts with his brother Abel, the King of Bel. Cain will actually hold his tongue, pull back from a situation, and will even ask Abel's opinion on some matters before making decisions. He regards him more as a leader, as a ruler than he would have dreamed of when Abel was still known to the world as Keiichi or K1. His attitude becomes more guarded, and he seems to step more cautiously. It is not fear he shows when Abel shows his darker natures, but extreme caution. Even if Abel were to act almost indistinguishable from Abel, Cain's altered mannerisms are enough to set anyone that knew Cain previous to his brother's ascension would cause worry.
History (canon spoilers mixed with unmarked fanon)
Cain's history begins with a tale well known by the western world. The story of Cain and Abel, of Cain killing his younger brother out of seemingly petty jealousy. The Cain that entered his current life as Naoya Kimura is the Cain from so long ago, the most current incarnation in a long line of reincarnations. When Cain killed Abel, God placed a curse upon him. He would be forever trapped in an endless cycle of reincarnation, and he would retain the memories of every life lived. To prevent those that learned of his true self from killing him, to force him into living every life to its full, he had placed upon him a "mark". The mark would give those who thought of killing him an unshakable feeling of it being the worst thing that could be done. If any were to break it, the curse would return on them sevenfold: They would in an instant remember every life lived and become an ageless immortal. They would not be allowed to die.
God did not place this curse out of spite, for he wanted to be able to forgive Cain. He wanted the second child of Man to repent. If Cain would only do so, God would remove the curse and give His full forgiveness. The deity assumed that by forcing him to live many lives, Cain would have the time to reflect and repent his actions... it didn't work, as it would allow Cain to plot his revenge.
After God placed the curse upon him, Cain seemed to vanish. At several points even God lost track of His child. Cain did meet others, but most of his life was spent in solitude. Before his bitter and lonely death of old age (of more than a few centuries with the age Man could live to then), he knew his parents had many many more children. He heard that the birth of his second brother impacted Eve quite a bit, as the first woman considered "Seth" to be Abel's replacement. Cain never so much as saw his other siblings.
His curse was fulfilled, and he reincarnated many times. His bitterness towards God increased rather than his regret, and he decided after a few lives that he would never repent. He would instead take revenge upon God. He was struck with an idea he considered simply ingenious upon meeting one of Abel's incarnations the first time. God favored Abel, his brother was His favorite child. If he could turn Abel away from God, if he could damn his brother's soul, the revenge would be perfect. Somehow or another, he always seemed to fall short of his task. Somehow, Abel would slip through his fingers. To this day Cain isn't aware it was via loose divine intervention in relation to the reincarnations of Seth. His goal would finally come to fruition in the modern era.
Naoya Kimura realized the curse of his soul at the approximate age he always had. The age in which he would have his first memory. The shift surprised and pleased the adults, and he was always being complimented for his maturity. None of them could possibly know that he had not been a child since that Genesis so long ago. Naoya met his three year old cousin when he was ten, the boy named Keiichi Kimura. He knew in an instant he had once again been forced together with the soul of Abel. As had become a custom for Cain, he took the chance.
The problem was the distance at which he lived from his uncle. He spent two years planning, using computer programs as his focus of study. His parents, whom he had only treated with hollow respect for his childish form, were put at a full arm's length. He had become ice towards them, having never cared for them much and now considering them already dead. Around his twelfth birthday, he used the skills he had gained and hacked into the public transport system of Japan. He knew full well his parents were out. The breakdown of streetlights (and various other systems, so as to muddy the true purpose of the hack) across all of Tokyo that day seemed a tragic accident. Dozens of lives were lost, and among them were those of his parents. He considered them unimportant, necessary sacrifices to his cause. He has little doubt that Abel know the truth of those events now, but he has never clearly answered even when the issue was directly raised.
As he had known would occur, he was sent to live with his aunt, uncle, and now five year old cousin. At first, the way he took Keiichi under his wing was out of pure manipulation. The boy had to trust him if he was to corrupt him in the manner he needed. However, something unexpected developed that even the man who had lived hundreds of lives had not foreseen. He became somewhat attached to the younger boy, a fact he has only admitted to Seth in private. The two people that regarded themselves as their parents were often away from home, but Cain was not bothered. It granted him more time wi-to manipulate Keiichi. When Naoya moved out when he turned twenty, the thirteen year old was all but eating from the palm of his hand. They continued to keep in close touch.
When he was approached by the religious cult known as the Shomonkai, he saw the opportunity fall into his lap. They wanted him to create a Demon Summoning Program, and Cain saw how beautifully this would spiral out of control. At one point he hit a wall, but a woman named Aya helped him with a song sung in the language of the time before the fall of the Tower of Babel. A language even Cain was unable to speak for the way the languages had been sundered. It was with that song he was able to complete the program. It needed emotions, but Cain was able to easily get them via a connection to the internet. It was through the program and the summoning server that the modded COMPs were created, devices that would allow anyone to summon and potentially control demons.
It was the evening of the program's completion that he called up Keiichi and the two teens he knew were his brother's closest friends. An annoying girl his cousin (like) liked named Yuzu Tanikawa and his irritating self-proclaimed apprentice Atsuro Kihara. He informed them that he wanted to meet up with them the next day. Events came up involving one of the functions of his COMP he had programmed exclusively for himself, his brother, and his two friends that forced him to cancel the meeting. He handed the three COMPs (one white, one pink, and one blue) to Yuzu and told her to give them to the others, that "they would need them". He was not lying, his brother would need it to survive. He gave on to Atsuro for the teen's programming skills, and to Yuzu as a means of manipulation. Keiichi would not function well if Yuzu were killed.
Atsuro discovered the encryption on the devices and decided that it was a "greeting" from "Naoya". He set them up so Keiichi, Yuzu, and he could at least check the e-mail, and as a result received a strange e-mail. It was known as "Laplace Mail" and was able to uncannily predict the future. The prediction that a person would die at the Aoyama Apartments set Yuzu on edge, and when police sirens headed that way she and Keiichi ran to the location as it was where "Naoya" lived. "Naoya" was mildly surprised to see them and informed them they had to return to Atsuro. The COMPs could not be unlocked without being in immediate vicinity due to the way Cain had programmed them, and their lives would be in grave danger if they were not unlocked soon.
Over the next seven days, Tokyo went to hell in a handbasket. Things spiralled out of control in the Yamanote Circle, and Keiichi was involved in the war for the Throne of Bel - What Cain had been planning all along. Cain pulled his brother even tighter around his finger and told him the only way to end the Lockdown that had occurred and save Man from God's future ordeals was to become the King of Bel, ruler over all demons. When Keiichi finally conceded to "Naoya"'s plans, Yuzu and Midori left his group. Cain was amused by this, as Yuzu's departure had merely pushed his brother closer into his arms.
During events of that seventh day, Cain learned of a "lost Bel". Cain realized that Keiichi's throne could be contested if the demon known as Belphegor was let alone. With Nyarlathotep's help, he managed to create a program to send Keiichi to the place they would come to know as Dimension Island.
There were unplanned occurrences, however. Somehow or another he made a very slight error in his programming, and Midori was sent to the Island as well. Beyond that, Keiichi managed to become close friends with a boy around his age, one Yuugi Mutou who was clearly unwavering in the loyalty of his friendship. As a result of their connection, Keiichi also befriended the former Ancient Egyptian Pharaoh known as Atem. They both remained his friends even after learning the truth of Cain and Abel, a truth Keiichi had pieced together from comments made by two angels shortly before he came to the Island.
The friendship bothered Cain, as he knew that if his friends tried hard enough there was potential for him to veer from the path of corruption. He had no doubt God would extend the same offer to his brother, if he only repented he would still be allowed to become the Messiah and glorified figurehead of God. Things only became more complicated when the arrival of a twin neither Cain nor Keiichi had known about arrived. For reasons unknown to any of them, the boy named Keiji had been "chosen" as a "replacement Messiah" due to Keiichi's actions. This kicked Keiichi even further into darkness.
Things were still horribly tense between Keiichi and Keiji when the Shadows from the homeworld of two of Keiichi's other friends made the teenager and Cain their victims. The time when the Shadows were active, the hidden "Dark Hour" between one day and the next, prevented the COMPs from being accessed.
When Cain became once more aware, he realized they were in a mysterious shop he and his brother had grown to despised. They learned from one of the shop owners they hated as much as the shop that Keiji had been kidnapped by the Bel they were there to defeat. With that information, they also learned that Keiji was in truth Seth, a replacement for Abel in this life as much as the other.
They left to rescue Keiji, and found the teenager literally crucified. Keiichi flew into a rage and for the first time Cain saw the growing darkness that made Abel more demon than human. Belphegor ended up committing suicide to prevent Keiichi from torturing him as he wished. Keiji asked Keiichi if he could return to Japan, and the agreement was made. Cain was pleased by this development, he had managed to corrupt both of God's attempts at a Messiah.
Keiichi, Keiji, and "Naoya" parted on sour terms with all the friends Keiichi had made during his time on the Island. They met up with Atsuro, Kaido, and Mari and proceeded with the plans that had been made five minutes before in the time frame of that world after rushed introductions and understandable confusion. Abel's nature became demonic upon gaining the Throne, and the events of the fight made it painfully clear how much of a "kid with the leash" the teen that had formerly considered himself Keiji was to his twin. It was clear that if Seth were lost, Abel would lose what little humanity he retained.
The Lockdown was ended easily enough. Cain watched with mild annoyance as Abel bid farewell to his parents, telling them to forget about him. Seth met his birth father for the first time and the scene was more than a little emotional. It was the first and last time he would see the man, just as it was the last time Abel would see those he knew as his parents. They exited the city after that, although the army of demons was rather quickly cut down due to various bloody events that allowed their exit.
The day after, the group entered the Demon Realm by Abel's power. Mari did not go with them, expressing a desire to tend to the humans that would be getting caught up in the War of Bel. Abel managed to drop the group into the middle of a territory owned by a "Lady Lilith", and Cain had an undesired second meeting with the first wife of Adam turned human. Undesired because of certain... relations he had shared with her in the past. If you know what I mean. The tension between Cain and Abel continued.
The first full moon that occurred in the Demon Realm created a change in Abel that had been expected by no one. He became all but pure demon, with maybe .1% of his already low humanity in tact. It was glaring evidence of what would happen to Abel if Seth were to vanish. A month after that so-called negotiations lead Abel to believe Seth had been killed. It was shown what a 100% demon Abel would be like. Abel regretted the actions, as his long time advisor Kikuri-Hime was killed by his own hands in them. He realized just how much of a weakness Seth was. It was a result of those events that actually deepened the bond between Cain and Abel. Following them Cain taught Seth of torture and the aura of the King's twin darkened rather badly. It was still less than one would expect of one in his position, but it was clear that Abel and Seth were twins.
Another full moon passed. The new moon after that had Abel in the most human mindset he was capable of sporting since ascending the Throne. Abel informed Cain that he wished to return to the Island. The time flux would allow an extended break. Cain did think of advising against it, but chose to comply without argument. Abel, Cain, and Seth would be returning to the Island, and this time Kaido and Atsuro would be accompanying them...
Other
Cain almost never responds to the name of Naoya anymore, and if pressed about it states he never was Naoya. He won't even act as if he has heard most people if they call him by the name given to him in this life. He will only respond to one person who uses that name, and that is Abel. In regards to Abel and Seth, those are the names he considers to be theirs. He would in truth respond to Seth if his youngest brother were to call him Naoya, but Seth never does, not even by mistake. Naoya will only use the names given to his brothers in this life as a way of emphasis when the need arises.
When in the presence of the court or making an impression in regards to his brother's position, he rarely uses Abel's name, a sign of deferment. He refers to him as "My Liege" and "Your Majesty". On the rare cases he feels the need to refer to Abel by name, it is always as "King Abel". He never uses Japanese honorifics for the western name, although he is aware Seth prefers it. Seth is referred to as the "Prince of Bel" or "Prince Seth", a title that Kaido had previously nicknamed Seth with. The demons refer to him as "Lord Cain", "General Cain", and "General of Bel". The occasional "Cain-sama" is also dropped.
