SQUISH.
The sound of bones crunching and flesh being packed into itself echoed around the now silent mountaintop, the blizzard having ceased during the night. After a few seconds, the sound ceased, and peaceful silence reigned for about one more minute before a different gut-wrenching wracket was made. This time, bones snapped into place and reformed, veins grew and connected, cells worked double time to rebuild torn flesh and non-existent skin. Teeth poked out of freshly formed gums, eyeballs filled empty sockets, and organs began functioning once more. At last, after a full five minutes, Alex drew in a deep, shuddering breath as his body gave one great spasm into living again.
Greedily gulping down the freezing oxygen, he forced himself to sit upright with the support of his still-shaking arms, blade seeping back into normal flesh and bone. His clothing had returned as well, just as it always mysteriously seemed to do, and the only sign he'd been injured at all was the massive bloodstain in the snow beneath him. Alex grunted as he shakily stood, stumbling slightly in his new legs and blinking warily at his now clear surroundings. No matter how many times he regenerated, he never got used to the feeling of being reborn anew but exactly the same as before. Which is why he really hated doing so, and which was why he was going to hunt down that beast and make it pay for its meal.
Growling under his breath, Alex glanced around the snow around him, upturning some of it with his shoes. Old blood was just barely visible, along with mostly buried tracks and the dying scent of blood. Frowning, he turned on his heel and followed the trail, a new goal settled in his mind. Alex would follow this monster to the edge of the island if need be, and would relish killing it.
