Given the time of day and lack of congestion, it only took ten minutes for Atem to reach the police station. Adding to the speed was how fast the former Pharaoh was walking, and rather interestingly how little attention he was paying to his surroundings. He was inside his head, replaying the events of the day in his head. It wasn't even solidly in the after noon yet, but he couldn't forget them.
Bakura, Anpu, or Malik were probably dead. If it was either of the first two, the other was trapped in the Ring. It had taken him a while to decide that had to be the case, but given the lack of reactions the Item was having around his neck, it had to be the only explanation. The souls held within the Items could only possess themselves, or at least a piece of themselves. He could only take dominance over his Partner, and Anpu could only take dominance over Bakura.
Odds were that one could work in reverse, but Yuugi had only been able to force it that first time to save Kaiba's life. It wasn't easy, and it related strongly to how the other spirit felt about it... even if Yuugi had managed to force the dominance against his will. Plus, there seemed to be some need for the dormant spirit to be aware. Bakura's reactions in regards to the Ring's original spirit indicated he hadn't been. Atem sighed and looked at the Ring. So who was in there?
He almost walked right past the police station due to his thoughts. He had actually taken a step past in when he looked up and realized where he was at. It said something about his auto pilot, he'd never actually been here before. The former Pharaoh shook his head at himself and backtracked the few steps it took him to reach the door. He grabbed it and pulled it open, the bell programmed into it letting everyone know someone had come inside.
"Excuse me..."

It had been a busy day for Yamada. He'd been hoping that for once, because it was Christmas and all of those Americans on the island thought Christmas was awesome and stuff he'd have a genuinely un-busy day for once. He'd been wrong. It had started off with that skirmish back at the Hotel (it really said something about his life when he could call that a skirmish), and while no one had died, it had created a whole load of paperwork. Which he'd subsequently dumped on Adachi.
Adachi had been acting strange ever since he finally came back to work. Yamada knew he and Takahashi were the only ones who noticed, but Adachi had taken a lot less shit from his superiors since he'd finally come back, and he seemed to be a bit grumpier. Hell if Yamada knew why his behavior had changed like that. Maybe that kid he'd been taking care of finally said "fuck you" and left.
In any case, Adachi had later gone home early, and not even thirty minutes later, he'd gotten himself mixed up in what was quite possibly another one of those torture incidents in the process, tried to help whoever was getting attacked, and ended up accidentally shooting a bystander and the attacker getting away. And just for good measure, the attackee tried to beat Adachi to death and now he was in the hospital again. Christ.
At the moment, Yamada was working the front desk. Anything to not have to deal with some of the chaos going on in the back. Takahashi had gone out to the shrine that the victim had run before her untimely end, and Adachi was paying a visit to the hospital, so of the people Yamada really knew at the station, he was pretty much alone.
He looked up as he heard the front door's bell go off. Some spiky-haired kid with tri-colored hair and tanned skin. Christ, some of the people they got on the island.
"How can I help you?" Yamada asked politely.

Atem noted that it seemed fairly empty at the station. He didn't know how many detectives the force had, but if it made up a lot of it the explanation was probably right there. After all, part of why he was here were those torture cases. He had to find out if Bakura or Malik had been among the victims. He just hoped that whatever was being done to them left them recognizable. Atem grabbed the Ring with one hand. Someone was probably dead, but this wasn't the time to get emotional.
"I'm trying to find two... friends of mine. I heard about the torture cases and was hoping I could make sure neither of them had been victims. They've been missing for about a week," Atem stated. He shook his head, "They can take care of themselves, so I wasn't worried about it until today."
Atem was actually speaking a bit more politely than usual. He was still informal, but he was less rude than usual. There wasn't a feeling that he was putting himself on some higher pedestal, just that he was a teenager who didn't quite know how to talk to his elders right, or didn't care.

Yamada raised an eyebrow at the story. Well, not like things like that were impossible. But they must not have been very good friends if he wasn't worrying about them until a week after they'd disappeared. Maybe he just knew them from work or something.
"So you think they might have gotten mixed up in this, then?" Yamada asked. "Well, we do have a few unidentified bodies... think you can describe them to me?"

Atem returned the eyebrow with a flat expression. He could have lied about when he'd seen them last, but that would be easier to trace. Beyond that, he wanted to be as honest about this as he could. The man has possibly caught his hesitation over using the word friends. He gave a nod as Yamada asked about it. Unidentified bodies... well... Atem chose to start with Malik. The Egyptian teenager had the most recognizable trait, after all. And it would have been noted on a dead body.
"The first one is named Malik Ishtar. He's Egyptian and has medium length platinum blond hair. He's got fairly dark skin and can usually be seen wearing gold accessories. Most noticable would be his back," Atem paused for a moment. How did he want to describe this...? He shook his head. Full honesty, "He has the scarring of Ancient Egyptian symbols and hieroglyphics carved into his back."

Yamada gave a whistle as Atem described Malik's scars. That was pretty hardcore. Considering Atem had specified scars, Yamada really had to wonder what that kid had done to himself to get scars like that.
"Off the top of my head, I can't think of any bodies with that... Some of them did have all the skin on their backs cut off, but even still, that friend of yours has a pretty unique appearance. I think I'd remember someone like that," Yamada said. He tapped a ballpoint pen on the desk as he thought to himself. Yeah, he couldn't remember anyone looking like that showing up in their morgue.
"What about that other friend of yours?" Yamada asked.

Atem's expression darkened as Yamada stated they hadn't found Malik. That meant it was probably Bakura's body, at the very least. He clenched the Ring tighter and closed his eyes. If there was only some way to see what cou... Atem's eyes opened wide and he looked at the Ring. Actually, there was. He looked up towards Yamada and shook his head in apology.
"His name is Bakura Ryou. He's Japanese and has long white hair, somewhat matted. Brown eyes. Last time I saw him he was wearing a trenchcoat."
Given Adachi's attachment to Bakura, it was possible Yamada would know him. Atem knew about that and counted on it. Bakura being missing might even lead to some further information on Adachi and/or Izanagi. He loosened his grip on the Ring as he waited for a response.

"Oh, that kid Adachi-san was taking care of? I didn't know you knew him," Yamada said. "Yeah, we haven't seen anyone like him, and trust me, we would have known if that kid'd been killed. Adachi-san was crazy about him for a while there. Not so much anymore, but Adachi-san hasn't been talking much since he came back to work."
He blinked. If this kid knew Ryou, then he definitely knew Adachi. "Hey, you wouldn't happen to know what's been eating Adachi-san lately, would you? He's been acting weird since he came back to work."
Yamada had to count his lucky stars that Takahashi wasn't here. There'd be no end to the hell he'd catch for small talking with civilians like this.

Atem kept a neutral expression as Yamada chattered on. He could easily tell the man that Bakura came from the same world he did, but there was no need. The former Pharaoh's expression didn't change as Yamada talked about how crazy Adachi had been. It hurt a bit, but his expression didn't change. He shook his head as Yamada asked about Adachi. Now he had to go with the baldfaced lie.
"I only know him in passing. If he was taking such good care of Bakura, I'm curious as to why he isn't turning the Island upside down to find him," Atem's voice was a bit flat. He couldn't conceal all the anger at the situation.
Even worse, neither of them had shown up. Did that mean the bodies hadn't been found. Atem turned his foot to leave when an idea came to him. Those torture cases could still be connected to Adachi, or at least Izanagi. And this man seemed talkative enough...
"There wouldn't be anything connecting those cases, would there be? I mean, so I can avoid running into this person?"

Yamada frowned. Yeah, that was another weird thing. Adachi hadn't freaked out about that Ryou kid going missing at all. And now that he thought about it, hadn't this guy said his friends had been missing nearly a week? That was about how long ago the murders had started...
"Huh? Something linking them? Hmmm..." Yamada thought about it. "Well, all I can really tell you is that none of the victims seemed to be younger than about thirty or so... it's always young adults and kids and stuff. Sorry I can't tell you any more."

Atem shook his head. His end had been a bust, which meant Yuugi would probably fair better. There was some kind of relief there. If Magatsu had left whoever had the Ring alive... of course, if Anpu had been carrying it, Malik could still be dead. He shook his head. He could go back to the apartment. There was something he wanted to check. After thinking about it, there was a chance he could see who was inside the Ring after all...
"Thank you," Atem said, although it was with the most informal speech he'd used to this point. He turned to leave.
