Actual Bill (Click Full Text): www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=s111-3804
I don't think we have to be worried. However, I suppose I can see how some people are freaking. But it seems that most of the people freaking are simply signing an internet petition and calling it good.
I've pirated things before. I think most of us have. I won't got into details here. What I'm trying to say is even with that, I'm not worried about this passing. However, I respect those of you that are. If you are TRULY worried though, this is something more serious than a lot of the usual rants that get spread around here. Not all, but man of them. Its also something that can be directly fought, and by means more effective than an internet petition where signatures can easily be faked... quite likely by pirates.
If it bothers you, then please start a REAL petition. Get actual signatures, not bits of text that get turned into data and pass around on the internet. Contact the people doing the online petition, get them to help you set up a real petition. Go door to door. Too much trouble? Then you're either not that worried or don't care if the bill passes. Face it, folks, internet petitions are junk. They're too easy to fake.
I realize I don't have the world's greatest room to speak on this. Goodness knows there are plenty of things I could have taken real action over and just sat and ranted about. I'd like to think this is a little different as it has to do with the real government, but I may be deluding myself. But I'd like my points to still stand.
Also, if someone here wants to create a website and a form that a person can print out, put a real signature on, and mail to you, more power to you. I'll be willing to sign that just like I signed the online petition (it may be useless, but hey, it can't hurt).
If you're worried, take real action. If not, its as much your fault as the government's if (BIIIG if) this bill gets passed.
