It wasn't that Kousei was complaining about the job. It was that he just wasn't happy with doing work this clean and pretty and pro bono. It made him want to vomit a little.
His job had to deal with some teenager who had been mostly doing petty thievery, save for some incidents about a month back where he'd poisoned (and killed) one kid. This teenager, Bakura Ryou, didn't have a defense lawyer, so a government mandated one had been sent to help with his transfer to another jail. They couldn't keep him in the police station jail forever, after all.
He pushed open the doors to the station, and with the air of someone who knew what they were doing, walked over to a rather incompetent looking officer who was manning the front desk. "I'm Bakura Ryou's criminal defense lawyer," Kousei said simply. The officer, whose nametag read "Yamada", pointed toward the door.
"...That door, end of the hall, third door on the right." Yamada hadn't gotten much sleep the previous night. Considering circumstances, he'd been on Bakura's night watch. Kousei nodded and headed through the door down to the cells.

Anpu was bored, that was the simplest way to describe the way he'd been locked up in here for just over half a week. While he'd tried to spend time harassing Yamada and working out when he wasn't pretending to be Bakura, it had gotten old fast. At least the food was decent enough, this era certainly treated its prisoners better than his home one had. Right now a direct eye wasn't even being kept on him, and his patience was beginning to wear thin. While he'd fallen for Atsuro's lies, he never trusted anyone more than he'd trust himself. That is to say, he wasn't putting much hope in the teenager's claims.
He was doing pushups when the door to the holding area opened up. He pushed up with enough force to right himself and was on his feet by the time Kousei reached his cell. He crossed his arms and gave the man an irritated look. No way in hell this man was a friend of his host's.
"Who the hell are you supposed to be?" Anpu asked.

Kousei had expected to come across this "Anpu" personality when he walked in. He had been informed of all of the details he would need not too long ago. One thing he knew was that Bakura Ryou quite likely possessed Dissociative Identity Disorder. The whole reason he'd been imprisoned in the first place was because his "Ryou" personality had revealed his "Anpu" personality had been behind the serial poisonings about a month back. It didn't help that his "Anpu" personality had subsequently stolen one of the detectives' gun and nearly killed said detective.
"I'm your defense attorney." Kousei stated. "My name is Hikaru Kousei. I'm here to help you work out your defense."
One of the first things he always did was put his client at ease. It was easier to manipulate an at-ease client. It was easier to manipulate an at-ease court too, but right now he was dealing with the client.

Anpu gave an unsure but highly aggravated stare at the man for a moment, as he traced the knowledge he'd gotten from Bakura before the Ring got taken from him. Realization clicked into place and he chuckled a bit. He walked over to the bed in the cell and sat down, but there was no indication of giving ground to Kousei.
"This one of those confidential things, or they got a camera on me now, too?"

"Completely confidential," Kousei said. Indeed, it was. He'd gotten the security cameras temporarily turned off for this. What Anpu wouldn't realize was that he had a tape recorder in his suit pocket, which he had turned on before entering the room.
"Let's start with some basic details, Bakura-san," Kousei said. "For one, there is absolutely no evidence to convict you. All that they have is circumstantial evidence based on the word of one detective."
He sighed. "Unfortunately, your confession tosses the fact that it was circumstantial evidence out the window."

Anpu smirked as Kousei said that the camera was off. The idea of a tape recorder didn't even cross his mind. The fact of the matter was Anpu was not extremely versed in modern technology. Atem had been a blank slate, and by the time a lot of those issues had come up he and Yuugi had fully opened towards each other. Anpu had only bothered referencing his host's memories when he needed information, and Bakura wasn't generally suspicious of others.
Bakura leaned back against the one end of the bed, the position looking like it should be awkward due to how it was stuck on the wall. He crossed one leg over the other and looped his hands behind his head, "Legal system of this era works a fair bit differently, don't it? You're saying despite the rather obvious fact that I did this stuff, I could walk?"
Anpu was beginning to like this era a lot more than Egypt.

Kousei noted the comment about the era. Bakura's "Anpu" personality fancied itself an Egyptian King of Thieves. Should they need to jump to an insanity argument, they could easily use the argument that his other personality committed the crime. It would mean a stay in a mental hospital for his client to work out his issues, though.
"Possibly. As far as I know, your confession was never gotten on record, but the fact that a rather large number of detectives supposedly heard it would cause issues," Kousei said. "Have you ever been tested for disassociate identity disorder?"

Anpu raised an eyebrow at the words Kousei used. Disassociated... Unassociated? He looked to be thinking for a moment, and made a proper leap based on evidence. He chuckled a bit. He didn't know why this man was so calm, but he had the feeling that the law in this era was far less concerned with right and wrong. At least this individual seemed to be, he hadn't batted an eye at the situation yet.
"No. Are you quite honestly saying that Bakura could get off just because he wasn't in his right mind? Honestly, it was his body that committed the crimes, even if it wasn't 'him'," Anpu leaned forward, "And you honestly don't care, do you?"
So much for divine justice, Anpu thought to himself with another slight chuckle. Not that he'd continued to believe in that after seeing everyone he'd ever known killed in front of his eyes, anyways.

Kousei completely ignored the point about him not caring and continued on. He used very precise wording in his next statement.
"Criminals have gotten off in the past by claiming that their other personality was the one to commit the crime. The police have already seen a 'Ryou' and an 'Anpu,'" Kousei said. "It would be simple enough to act the part of 'Ryou' and prove that 'Ryou' didn't commit the crime, 'Anpu' did."

Anpu hit another stage of amused at this man. He was an absolute bastard, wasn't he? Fair enough, Anpu prefered to work with that sort. He leaned back again as the man spoke and appeared to be paying rather close attention to his words. He shook his head.
"There we have a problem then. Bakura has already insisted that he deserves punishment, and it would be..." Anpu considered for a moment at the proper word. He found it, and it was a very specific way of wording, "Out of character for him to start insisting otherwise out of nowhere. Nor is he the sort to plead innocent to a crime he feels he committed. He blames himself directly for everything that's happened."

Kousei thought about that for a very slight moment. It was only for a moment before he answered Anpu.
"You had a visitor recently, correct?" Kousei asked. "Said visitor claimed to be a good friend of yours, and Ryou was the one who spoke to the visitor. It's possible another visit might convince Ryou to change his mind."

Anpu seemed to consider for a moment. He didn't think Ryou would have conceded, but it wasn't as if "Ryou" was really there. That was quite possibly the most amusing thing about this man's suggestions. He was suggesting he do the thing he'd been doing for some time. However, Anpu couldn't for the life of him come up with that Atsuro figure from his host's memories. Still, Kousei didn't know Bakura. He considered for a moment, and then smirked.
"It could work in theory, but I'm not sure one person will be enough," Anpu stated. It had been about four days, hadn't it? "How is Tohru doing? I know Bakura has a rather large attachment to him despite their falling out, if we could get him to try and convince 'Ryou' to fight this in addition to Atsuro, I think we could justify a change of heart."

"Adachi Tohru was is in stable condition, and was due to be released from the hospital tomorrow," Kousei stated. "It would be simple enough to convince him to aid us, considering his attachment to Ryou."
Kousei frowned. "I would like to bring in Kihara again, but there is a slight problem. As far as the Void City census is concerned, Kihara Atsuro doesn't exist."

Anpu seemed satisified with the comment on Adachi. That was going to be a tricky nut to crack, as Adachi was quite aware of Bakura still being in the Ring. Even if he could bluff his way to convincing Adachi that Bakura had come back, he could potentially check with those at the Apartments. Despite no love being lost there, the attachment Adachi had to the original owner of this body would either play for or against them.
He looked puzzled at the census comment, "What do you mean? That you can't find him?"
There was an issue suggesting that he ask the Pharaoh about that, as well.... then again, given this man's obvious level of actual care for justice....
"There's an Egyptian at the apartments named Atem. Atsuro seems to be aquainted with him, if the issue is finding Atsuro, he might be able to help you," Anpu said, "However, it's quite likely he wants me behind bars. You might be better off with the one named Yuugi if you can detach him from the Pharaoh's hip for half a second."
Anpu wasn't even aware of the slip he'd made at the end there. Then again, it was quite possible to chalk it up to Anpu's "delusions".

Kousei nodded. It was more complicated than that. In order to keep track of who was on the island (for many reasons, such as keeping the great firewall that kept information pertaining to worlds people came from off the island), a monthly census was done in Void City where all hotels, apartment complexes, and subdivisions were required to present information on their current residents. The ITS was also required to give info on any new people who had just come through the portals. In fact, this month's census had just gone out, meaning that even if Atsuro had been a new resident on the island, info on him should have been archived.
And yet, despite this, the only information Kousei had found on Atsuro was from one document: a police report on an explosion that had taken place at the Hotel on Christmas Day. His name had been mentioned in passing in the report, and no details had been given on him.
Kousei didn't visibly react to the comment about Pharaoh. It was completely likely this Anpu was delusional, and it was likely another delusion of the man. However, he filed away the tip about Atem and Yuugi. If they knew where Atsuro was, they could call Atsuro in and have him talk to Bakura.
"I'll consider that," Kousei said. "I'll work on arranging a visit for Adachi and tracking down Kihara. It's likely you will be moved to the city jail soon, since you've been kept here so long. Your trial shouldn't start for another few weeks, though."
