The Bottomless Canyon was a rather strange bit of nature. Long ago, it had been much like any canyon from our own world, but over time, the river had just continued cutting through the rock, and eventually, the ground collapsed out from under the river and into the void. Now the river that had once led into the canyon just fell into the void in a great waterfall, and the section of the island the canyon cut off was in danger of floating away.
Poniko was walking along the edge of this canyon, without much of a care in the world. Something about how she walked seemed off. Perhaps the fact that she had a bit of a depressed expression as she did it. Indeed, she appeared to be a bit too close to the edge as she walked.
Then, she turned and looked out at the canyon. The way she was standing indicated she was about to jump. Even had the canyon not been bottomless, such a jump would kill her.

You ever have one of those days where everything seems to be floating along, like a dream, or maybe a nightmare? Where you can walk for hours, seemingly guided by a mixture of intent and unconscious drive, and then suddenly wake up and have no idea where the hell you are or how you got there?
Lucy was having one of those days. Right now, she found herself by what looked like a big canyon. Something told her that things weren't right here. She clutched her hands, her tail curled around her waist to comfort herself. Her black ears lay flat on her head, and a chill came over her.
"What is this place...?" she whispered to herself.
It was then she realized she was not alone. A little girl was at the edge of the cliff! And it looked like she was about to fall off. Lucy's instincts took over and overrode her anxiety. She began to run to her, crying out for her not to jump. "Wait! You have to back up or you'll fall!" Even as she ran, she shivered. Something was seriously not right here.

Poniko slowly turned at the sound of a scream from behind her. The melancholy look on her face did not change as she turned around, and she did not move from the edge of the cliff.
"I won't die," Poniko said. There was an unnerving quality to her soft voice.

Despite her assurances, Lucy felt she had to do something. She got closer to Poniko, slowing, and reaching out. "You don't need to be here... c-come on," she said, nervousness overtaking her. "I don't want to see you fall."

Poniko took a few steps away from Lucy as she reached her hand out. The few steps she took finally sent her over the edge of the cliff, and she fell without even screaming. When she fell, she didn't even look surprised.
She appeared again behind Lucy.
"I told you I wouldn't die. You shouldn't have feared."

Lucy cried out in fear as Poniko walked off the cliff. She hurried to the edge to look down over, fearing the worst. What she got, though, was perhaps more disturbing. No body, no falling. Then a voice from behind her.
"Aah!!" she yelped again, turning to face her. "Wh...how did you do that?" she asked, terrified.

Poniko only gave Lucy a flat stare. She took a few steps toward the girl, and then stopped. And then Poniko vanished again.
When she reappeared, she was directly behind Lucy, and speaking right into her ear. There was an uncanny lack of breath from Poniko.
"Do you know what happens when the lights go out?"

Lucy shivered involuntarily. Close voice without breath. Something was dreadfully wrong. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up as her anxiety cranked up. She turned to face Poniko. The lights?
"What.... happens when the lights go out?" She'd had to go through a haunted mansion not terribly long ago. She'd had bad experiences with ghosts, and darkness. "T-t-tell me."

Poniko gave a smirk, and the young woman placed her hands on Lucy's shoulders. She lightly squeezed them, and then pulled away, taking a few steps away from Lucy. There was an almost... otherworldly quality to the woman, and her features strangely seemed indiscreet, when they were very definite only a few moments ago.
She smiled and held her hand up, like she was flicking a lightswitch.
"Why don't you find out, Lucy?"
Lucy had never given her name.
Poniko flicked her finger down. The world flashed black, and it was almost like the sun had gone out. Even still, the world would be visible to Lucy, only strangely washed out. The ground was a flat gray, and the sky was black. Poniko seemed to be almost monochrome herself, even though her form had been composed of very vivid colors only a few seconds before. And most of all... the world was completely silent.
"Why don't you... find out."

As Poniko flicked the lights off, Lucy's heart rate instantly skyrocketed. Her body instantly churned out a massive fear response by sheer instinct. She looked at her body, even it was monochrome. Her hands, her clothes, even her hair and ears. She reached behind herself at her back instinctively for an appliance she knew would not be there.
She looked back up to Poniko, expecting to see the same little girl in a basic looking skirt.

Instead, what stood before Lucy was something that only vaguely resembled a woman. Her entire body seemed to be melting, but her expression did not indicate that she was feeling any kind of pain from the change. What was left of her face had a clownlike smile plastered upon it.
And then, Poniko just melted away. There was no trace of the woman left. The moment she disappeared, a sound began to fill the world. A loud, yet muted scream that emanated from all around Lucy.
"AaaAaAaAaaAaAaaaa..."

Lucy watched in horror as Poniko seemed to melt. Still feeling like Poniko could help her, she tried to run forward to help the girl... until her face took on the clownlike impression. That paused Lucy right in her steps.
Then Poniko was gone. Lucy heard one thing, the muted scream. She was filled with pure terror. She couldn't think, she just acted, her legs beginning to run away from Poniko's former location as fast as they could carry her. She didn't know where she was going, she just... went.

The world would appear to spin around Lucy, and when it stopped spinning, Lucy would be running right toward the cliff. Whether Lucy kept running or stopped in her tracks, she would see something manifest in front of her. Something made of a black inky substance.
Its face resembled a mask, one that only vaguely resembled Poniko's face.
You can't run.

Lucy slammed on the brakes, best she could. Whether it was because of the mask or the cliff, she would never know. This nightmare would not let her go!
Not thinking rationally anymore, the horrified bunny girl attempted to leap over the mask, taking her chances with the cliff, and not the spinny world or the girl.

The girl lept too short, her foot brushing Uboa's form. In an instant, the world would change once again, the cliff no longer there, and the ground covered with an ocean of blood. Uboa was still there, but so were thousands and thousands of Ponikos, all smiling, taunting.
"You're nothing."
"Nothing."
"Nothing."
"A coward."
