Full Name: Homura Akemi (暁美 ほむら)
Nicknames: n/a
Age: Physical age is around 13-14, but due to the timelines she’s relived, she’s probably a lot older.
Height: ?
Weight: ?
Gender: Female
Race: Puella Magi
Alliance: Neutral Good
Home: Mitakihara Town, Japan
Franchise: Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Physical Description: Homura’s one of those cases where I’m just going to say “look at the pictures”.
Weapons: Homura’s main weapon is a shield with a sand-clock on the inside. The shield allows Homura to both stop and turn back time. More on the time stopping abilities below. It also has hammerspace qualities that allow Homura to store objects within the shield, even objects far too large for it, like tanks and missiles. Homura often stores firearms and explosives within the shield. Her preferred choice of firearm is a Beretta 92.
Since the reboot of the universe at Madoka’s hands, Homura has gained a new weapon, and one that she actually uses more often than her various firearms now. She can change her shield into a longbow that shoots energy bolts. She can’t use the time stop function of the shield when it’s in bow form.
Abilities/Powers: Homura has the ability to stop and turn back time using her shield. In her original world, the sand timer had a month’s worth of sand in it. When all of the sand was gone from the top part of the timer, Homura could turn the timer back and travel back a month in time. Because that universe no longer exists, the sand instead continuously cycles through the timer, and by turning the timer back, she can travel back in time. She can also stop the flow of sand, allowing her to stop time for a period. By using this ability to stop time, she can appear to move faster than she actually is, and set up several attacks in advance. When stopping time, everyone except people she is touching is stopped.
Due to being a puella magi, Homura is functionally immortal. She does not age, and she will not die so long as her Soul Gem (which is a physical version of her soul) is not destroyed. She does not feel pain unless the injury is incredibly severe or an Incubator manipulates her Soul Gem.
The Soul Gem is also the source of her magic, and over time will become corrupted if Homura uses too much magic or feels despair. In the original world, Homura required Grief Seeds to purify her Soul Gem, but now she requires Curse Shards from demons to purify it. Should she not purify it, she will disappear from the world. (In the original universe, she would become a witch, but due to Madoka’s presence, it is impossible for Puella Magi to become witches now)
When using large amounts of magic, Homura often manifests large angel-like wings. When her Soul Gem is particularly corrupted, the wings change into something resembling a galaxy or the inside of a witch’s barrier.
There are also a multitude of other minor magical powers Homura possesses due to the wide properties of magic, but they’re so minor that I don’t need to list them here.
Skills: Homura is a skilled marksman, very rarely ever missing her target. It does not matter if she’s using her bow or weapons she has stolen; she tends to hit whatever she’s shooting at.
Personality: It would be easy to look at Homura and see your bog standard emotionless girl. She’s a loner, who doesn’t often show emotion. When she does show emotion, she tends to be cynical and blunt. It’s hard to get things past her, and she’s incredibly savvy to people’s reactions and possible situation outcomes. She rarely hesitates in battle, and is entirely willing to just shoot someone should they try to do something she finds unacceptable. When she gets it into her mind to do something, she will not stop until it is done, even if it takes her multiple timelines to do so. Despite her surface traits, she actually does care for the well being of everyone she knows, and can be quite friendly if you can get past said surface traits.
History: (Spoilers begin here and pretty much don’t let up)
Homura spent much of her life in the hospital due to a heart condition she’d had since she was young. It was a long arduous process, but after several years she was finally healthy enough to leave the hospital and go to school. She transferred into Miyakihara Middle School, where a girl named Madoka Kaname and her friend, Sayaka Miki, tried to befriend her, but they only made Homura feel nervous. Already quite depressed from her long stay in the hospital, she begins to feel suicidal thoughts on the way home from school, causing her to wander into the barrier of the witch Isabel.
Luckily, Homura is saved by Madoka and another girl named Mami Tomoe, who reveal themselves as Puella Magi and ask Homura to keep their job secret from other classmates. Homura becomes fascinated with her new magical friends, and begins to spend a large amount of time with them despite not being a Puella Magi herself.
Everything changed when Walpurgisnacht appeared. The witch, who was so strong that she did not require a barrier, proved to be too powerful for Mami and Madoka. Mami was killed easily, but Madoka manages to defeat the witch. However, the injuries she had sustained during the battle were too much for her, and Madoka died. An incubator, Kyubey, appears to Homura as she cries over Madoka’s dead body, and Homura contracts with him, wishing, "I want to redo my meeting with Kaname-san. Instead of being protected by her, I want to protect her!" With the contract formed, Homura becomes a Puella Magi, and uses her new powers to go back in time to when she first left the hospital.
A new timeline starts. After waking up in the hospital, going to school, and announcing immediately to Madoka that she’s a Puella Magi, Mami and Madoka get to training Homura in combat. Since her combat skills are weak, Homura turns to making explosives instead to fight. She, Mami, and Madoka continue to fight witches together.
Walpurgisnacht appeared once more a month later. Though they fought hard, Mami once again died in the fight, and Madoka was the one to lay the final blow. This time, though, Madoka used up all of her magic and didn’t have any Grief Seeds to purify her Soul Gem. Homura watched, terrified, as Madoka’s Soul Gem shattered and changed into a grief seed and Madoka became the witch Kriemheld Gretchen. Terrified and betrayed, Homura travels back in time once again.
A new timeline starts. Upon awakening, Homura immediately seeks out the Puella Magi of Mitakihara Town to tell them the truth of their contracts with Kyubey. However, Sayaka, who has become a Puella Magi as well, doesn’t believe her and accuses her of working with a rival Puella Magi, Kyouko. However, a few weeks later, Sayaka becomes a witch herself due to choosing to not purify her Soul Gem. After being forced to kill Sayaka, Mami breaks down and tries to kill all of the Puella Magi to save them from becoming witches. She manages to kill Kyouko before being killed by Madoka.
Walpurgisnacht appears once more, and Madoka and Homura fight it alone. They defeat the witch together, but the amount of magic they used fatally tainted their Soul Gems. Homura prepares to die together with Madoka, only for Madoka to take out a Grief Seed she’d been keeping and give it to Homura. She asks Homura to prevent her from becoming a Puella Magi the next time she goes back in time, and then asks Homura to kill her to keep her from becoming a witch. Homura shoots Madoka’s Soul Gem, and travels back once again.
A new timeline starts. Homura changes her appearance, pulling her hair down and magically healing her eyes. Taking Madoka’s wish to heart, she begins to try with all of her might to keep Madoka from contracting, and hunts down every witch in Mitakihara on her own. On the night of Walpurgisnacht’s appearance, Homura tries to take on the witch on her own, but Homura wanders into the fight, and is approached by Kyubey. Unable to hear Homura’s cries for her to not contract, Madoka contracts, kills the witch with one attack, and subsequently becomes a witch herself. Though Kyubey says that Kriemheld Gretchen will destroy the whole earth soon, Homura only leaves and travels back in time once more.
Over innumerable timelines, Homura repeats the same month over and over, trying and always failing to save Madoka. Unknown to her, every timeline she repeats causes more despair to gather around Madoka, strengthening her potential magical power.
A new timeline starts. Homura continues her usual routine, trying to Kyubey from contracting with Madoka as long as she can. She teams up with Kyouko so that she will once again have more than one Puella Magi to help her fight Walpurgisnacht, but after Kyouko dies while fighting Sayaka’s witch form, she’s left alone once more. Still, Homura goes to fight the witch, bringing out all of the firepower she has accumulated over multiple timelines. In the end, it is still not enough, and Homura is nearly overcome by despair before Madoka appears and contracts with Kyubey, with her wish being the nigh-impossible one of, "I wish to erase all witches from existence before they're even born. Every witch in the universe, from the past and the future, with my own hands." Madoka becomes a Puella Magi and what is essentially a goddess before travelling through time and space, healing defeated Puella Magi before they can become witches themselves.
In the end, Madoka’s wish caused the very nature of the world to alter, and of the old world, only Homura remained. She watches the world end as Madoka’s now comet-like Soul Gem collapses into a Grief Seed. However, the nature of Madoka’s wish means that Madoka then removes herself from the universe while the new one appears. Madoka appears to Homura afterwards, and gives her ribbons to her as a promise they will meet again, even after Madoka becomes a force of nature.
A new world begins, and only Homura remembers the old one. Because despair still exists, a new stand in for witches, demons, have appeared. The Puella Magi of this world fight demons, and after they have exhausted all of their magic, they disappear. Madoka does not exist in a physical form in this world, only as a loose memory in the minds of those closest to her.
One day, a large tear in reality appeared in this new world, and more demons than had ever been seen before appeared. Homura quickly realized that these demons had to be coming from somewhere outside of their world, and decided to attempt to close this tear. Before leaving for the tear, she discussed with Kyubey the world before Madoka’s wish. Though Kyubey didn’t believe her, he did note that a world with witches would be a much more efficient way of gathering energy than the current system.
Homura found the tear guarded by a large group of demons, and with Madoka’s voice encouraging her, Homura defeated them and travelled through the tear, leaving for the place on the other side: the Dimensional Island.
