What a refreshing nap!
Nepeta had awoken to see that John was still in her arms in front of her. She smiled, softly resting her face against the back of his head, smiling. She thought on what a good moirail he was. He comforted her when she was sad, was always up for a good hug, and he watched out for her. Of course, that brought back memories of her previous moirail... who she failed to protect.
Equius... He was gentler than he looked, and his obsession with the hemospectrum, when it didn't frustrate Nepeta, made her laugh. She fondly remembered the time when they both pretended to be each other's blood color. As much as Equius valued his status as a blueblood, he sure seemed to go along with being green!
He even helped Nepeta give him blueblood-type commands! He sure was cooperative.
Nepeta sighed. That was in the past now. She'd always be Equius's moirail, but since he was gone, it was time to move on.
John was her moirail now! And he sure as hell had needed it last night! He'd broken down and mourned the loss of his lusus! Er, his dad, he called him. A boy lusus who looked like an adult human. The concept seemed strange to Nepeta, but she was open-minded of the cultural differences between trolls and humans. It made her wonder what it would be like if a young troll was raised by an adult one. Somehow, in a deep-buried memory, of a once-forgotten past, it seemed like, she had an idea of how that would go.
But she shook her head gently. These phantom memories had been coming back a lot since she started playing Sgrub. With them had come the notion that she was destined to have flushed feelings for Karkat. She'd had them before, but since they entered the Medium, she just... knew it was supposed to happen, if only he could see it too. But he always avoided the issue or changed the subject. And when he and Terezi started to act flushed, she heartbrokenly but dutifully recorded the ship on her second shipping wall.
Shipping is hard. It's hard and no one understands.
When everyone else started to wake up, Nepeta casually made the morning conversation with everyone. Tavros and Gamzee had been sleeping soundly together. She blinked and realized they didn't have the comfort of a recuperacoon. And yet they had slept all right? No nightmares or vicious hormone build up? Maybe they had the same effect that Pounce had. Maybe sleeping with someone you're close to has a similar effect as the sopor slime.
John and Jade mentioned they wanted to head north. Nepeta nodded and gave both of them a big hug, John's especially tight. She bid farewell to her moirail and his ectosister, who she guessed was kind of his moirail then maybe too? She didn't know how human familial relationships worked but she sure liked Jade too. She made sure both of them knew to meet her back at the communal hives here, before setting off herself. She trusted Gamzee and Tavros to do whatever they were going to do, and gave them a friendly wave good-bye.
She didn't fully know where she was going to go, but she just kind of started walking. She casually checked her tablet to see if anyone else was on. John and Jade both were, but from the looks of it, they were the only ones besides her. She didn't expect Gamzee or Tavros to be online, and Eridan too was suspiciously away. Perhaps he was busy?
Either way, she refrained from bothering John or Jade for the moment, they could use some time to themselves, she figured. So she quietly set her Pesterchum to idle, and captchalogued her tablet.
Nepeta looked around. She had no idea she'd gone this far. She looked back. The city was quite a distance away. Along the way to... wherever, Nepeta found a hopbeast that had gotten caught in a trap of some kind. Feeling sad for it, she kneeled down to free it, taking it into her arms. Closing her eyes, she tried to do the healy thing again. Sure enough, it worked, and the hopbeast merrily skipped away.
She felt great about herself. She especially appreciated the sun, now that she could safely be in it without being scorched. Maybe this was why Kanaya liked it so much, it felt so exhilarating. She would have to remember to talk to her about that sometime! If she ever found Kanaya.
Eventually, Nepeta found what appeared to be an edge. Completely dropping off the entire island. Up in the sky, Nepeta could make out faint outlines in the false day. Almost automatically, she sat down. Just as quickly, she lost consciousness.
The first thing Nepeta noticed was that everything was dark. She could barely even see her own hand in front of her face. But past the hand, she could see... something. It looked like how Feferi had described her lusus, but... gray and weirder. If that were even possible.
Nepeta tried to "swim" away through the air, when she realized she couldn't. She looked down at herself to see why she could not, and noticed familiar garb on her. Her Dersite clothes? Sure enough, purple on lavender. Her hood was gone, too. She was her dream self. But Jack had killed it! Then again, Gamzee had killed her too. She really had started over.
One of the... things wrapped a tendril around her waist, to secure her in place. She heard them... talking. They were loud, grating, but also soothing and calm. Their ideas began to fill her head. Though they were jumbled in riddles upon convolutions, the message was clear.
According to the things, there was a temple below the island in the empty sphere. There, she would ascend to a higher plane. There, her true calling would be realized.
She didn't quite understand what they were telling her to do, but deep down she knew she had to do it. It had to be done. She idly looked around, and far in the distance, and yet close to her, she could see the island. Just looking at it gave her a headache from the failures of logical time and space.
She looked back to the things but the things were gone. Her whole world went black...
... and then she woke up. Her head hurt even more now, but she had a feeling of what to do. She checked her tablet. Looked like the entire day had passed. Without further waiting around, she hurried back to the city. She had to take John to the Heart Temple! Whatever that was!!
