What is this place?
Evan emerged from the shadows, slowly walking down the golden path and into the world of light that surrounded him. Everything was a bright haze of white and yellow, making it difficult for his eyes to pinpoint any details. Perhaps it was the light. Perhaps it was the fog that gently blew past him like clouds. He found it all bizarrely beautiful, but at the same time, he had to wonder just what was going on.
He looked over his shoulder. For a moment, he thought he saw a blurry shape resembling his angelic friend, but the image quickly faded back into nothingness.
When he faced forward again, Evan found himself face-to-face with a real, tangible, distinct shape. A gate. A huge golden gate not unlike what you'd expect the gates of Heaven to look like.
He blinked, surprised by this new development, and curiosity quickly got the better of him. Cautiously, Evan grabbed hold of one of the gate's golden doors and gave it a tug. It did not yield to his command, rattling in resistance against the counterpart door it was locked with.
An easy fix, of course, as Evan merely responded to this by pulling the Paramount Key out of his shirt and sticking it inside the gate's lock. However, he found himself hesitating, unable to bring himself to turn the key. What was behind this gate? What was so important that it needed to be locked? What force brought him to it in the first place?
What did any of this mean...?

The world of light vanished in a much more abrupt flash of white. This whiteness quickly faded into the familiar surroundings of Evan's bedroom in his and his friends' apartment.
He blinked his vision into focus and groggily sat up in bed, taking a moment to mull over his dream. Where was he? What was that gate? What was he missing having not opened it? And what was with that voice? He could've sworn it was Kendall's, but... no, something about that just didn't sit right in his mind. It was so surreal and confusing that he just couldn't process it all this soon after coming out of R.E.M.
Oh well. Dreams were weird.
Evan's gaze moved over to his clock, the red digital numbers lighting up in a pattern that read 10:24. He stared at the clock for a moment, not sure whether or not his eyes were playing tricks on him. But no, it really was almost 10:30 AM. The fact that he had slept in that late was startling enough, but he felt like he was forgetting something. What was today? Was something going on?
"CRAP!!!"
That's right! He had an appointment in six minutes! He was finally going to get his tattoo today!
Quickly kicking into overdrive, Evan launched himself out of bed and over to his dresser, where he haphazardly pulled out and threw on his sleeveless hoodie, jeans and socks. Then he dashed out of his room and into the kitchen. Almost all of his roommates were already gone, off to begin their own daily grinds, with the only residents still there besides Evan being Carter and Toby. The former was lying on the couch, perking up as Evan stomped into the room. "Oh hey. Was starting to wonder when you'd show."
"Hi! Sorry! No time! Late!" Evan anxiously shouted as he pulled a Pop-Tart out of the cupboard, tearing the wrapper open and starting into it cold.
Toby looked up from the dishes he was cleaning to innocently stare at Evan in confusion. "Late?"
"Getting my tat today!" Evan panted as he slipped his shoes on.
"Oh. Well, Patrick, Swift and the others are at the mall today if you wanna meet up with them."
"Will do! Later!" Finally, after shoving his cell phone in his pocket, Evan dashed out the door and down the apartment building hallway, panting between bites of his breakfast.
There was no way he was further prolonging what he had waited for for so long. He had been wanting a tattoo for years, and finally his opportunity had come. This was his big day, and he was NOT about to let it pass him by.
Unbeknownst to Evan, though, he still had yet to wake up...
