"Well," I chuckled, "Toby here is apparently very important to the Pantry-ness. Drink your tea or this time I'll actually hurt you, kid."
I take in the look. "Solace here does have a point," I say, twisting a braid with a finger, "Is there some way of repellin' these fuckers away once and for all?"

Toby very visibly jumped at Lark's threat, scooping up the mug and taking a small, cautious sip of the tea. His face reflexively scrunched up as he shakily set it back down.
"Um... HCK- Well... If there is a way to completely get rid of them... I don't know it. I only know how to keep them at bay."

"You think a hoard of Magma Trolls might delay them? I have ways of distorting space-time now, I can find those rather easily," she offered. "But anyway... if these things actually plan on stealing my home and incorporating it into their own, I'm shoving a lightbulb up their-"
"Your tea and soup, ma'am," a waiter offered before retreating back into the back.
"...where was I- Ah, right... Regardless of our game of Cat and Cat, we really can't hinder eachother at this point, can we Lark? If we want this island to stay right where it is, we'll need a very specific plan." She grabbed her soup bowl, drinking it like it was hot coffee.

"I rather like this place as it is, and hell if I'm lettin' it be absorbed into... whatever the f-" I was cut short by the arrival of my waitress.
"Your edamame, sir," she said, placing the bowl in front of me.
"Thanks Barb," I responded. "Shame I didn't bring Perce with me. This stuff's kinda his specialty." I took the chopsticks and brought a lone soybean to my mouth. "And if these Pantry-nesses wanna take it... I'm gonna have a very good time indeed."

"W-Whatever it takes to slow them down, I guess..." Toby mumbled, staring at his tea, REALLY not wanting to continue drinking it.
........................
And there really wasn't much else for him to say on the matter. He was still reeling from the events in the cemetery with complete terror. He had no idea how to stop the Præt'nos... and moreover, he had no idea what they were planning on doing with him.

"Hmm," Solace huffed, sipping her soup yet again. "...perhaps we'd learn more about their strengths and weaknesses if we encountered them properly," Solace offered. "The best method of learning is trial and error- and by that notion, we'd need to find one of them for a trial, then learn from our errors."

"From what Toby told me," I said in-between bites of edamame, "You can knock 'em out, if only briefly, if ya hit 'em hard enough here," I motioned to the area between my neck and shoulder with the chopsticks, "At the very least they respond FEEL good if you hit 'em there."
"But yes, we need to capture one. Maybe one of the little sick ones- if such a thing exists." I paused to chew and swallow. "Could we catch a little sick Pantry-nesses and experiment on 'im to see what makes them tic?"
Another thought occurs. "Also, do they qualify as alive or undead? I'm thinkin' revive kills zombie if it's the latter."

"Um... Y-Yeah, you have to pierce them between the neck and shoulder," Toby meekly elaborated. "It disrupts their forms and forces them back into the shadows to heal. Depending on how much damage is dealt, that can take a normal Præt'nos out for a few days."
He sunk a little bit at Lark's next proposal. "Well... you could say they're undead. They're souls of the deceased who refused to pass on and bonded with the darkness. They can take on a physical form reminiscent of their former body... b-but it's just a shell, the literal soul taking the shape of what it was once held in. Since they don't have an actual body, they can't get sick or tired... again, unless you stab the weak spot. Capturing and holding one indefinitely... it wouldn't be easy. I dare say it's impossible. Unless..."
Toby stared at his hands, an idea in mind... one that he really, really hoped he wouldn't have to do.

Solace took a moment to think to herself. "By that train of thinking, that would mean you need something akin to a sword with light radiating off of it, struck right at their weakspot to cause any lasting damage," the imp offered aloud. "As for capturing one... If they're linked to shadows, the best bet I can think of for keeping one in place would involve a pocket world cut off from any possible outside realm, considering darkness tends to be just as useful for spacial manipulation..."
She looked stumped, but then heard Toby. "You have a plan that might assist?" she asked.

"Why yes," I added, placing the chopsticks down. "Do you have any suggestions?"
Judging by the looks on their faces, I'd say my own face looks pretty damn evil by this point,
"Is there any reason why the Pantry-nesses were after you? Or was it just because you walked into them?"

"I doubt it... They can tap into the void, opening portals to any dimension of their choosing," Toby sighed.
He quite dramatically leaned back when he noticed Solace and Lark staring at him, the latter in particular sending him a look that tied his stomach in a knot. "Um... Well... I-I told you back at the cemetery... I have all the same powers as them, even though I'm not actually one of them. A-At least... I'd like to believe I'm not. I'm separate from their hive mind, at least. I don't know what exactly that makes me, but-"

"An Anti-body," Solace answered. "An anomaly, an unknown, the one thing in the world they may fear most..."
She gave a sly grin. "Hmm, YOU might be the key to their downfall, Toby. Tell me, do they tend to attack you at every possibility? Try to make you act as one of theirs? If anything, that tells me that they're most afraid of you... so a Praet'nos's worst enemy might just be another of its kind."
She leaned back in her chair, sipping her tea. "However... It seems possible you don't know any weakness to Praet'nos aside from light and their necks... So what about you is so important that they'd attack you..."

"Ah yes, the anomaly, the thing that shouldn't exist, kinda like whatever keeps eating travellers to Mount Tsereve," I say, wagging a finger. "Or as Solace says, an antibody."
A girl with strawberry blonde braids walked to the counter. "Yes, do you have Oak Tea? ... I guess I can do with elm tea."
"Toby, you wouldn't mind if Solace and I split ya open to see if we can't isolate what makes you so different, would you?"
"Yes, the beef yaki udon sounds good too."
"So, what'cha say? Yes, yes, or yes??"

Toby sighed. "They do tend to attack my friends and I pretty often... though I always assumed they were after Evan, not me. When it's just me, though... they do tend to act a little strange. Whether it be provoking me into my shadow form or just... trying to kill me without... I don't know, not really killing me... I don't know what they want with me or... what exactly I am..."
He then practically jumped out of his seat at Lark's next question. "UM... YES. AS IN YES, I WOULD MIND. PLEASE DON'T TOUCH ME."

Solace spritsed a little water magic at Lark. "Cool it, magic boy. Interesting as it would be to split you open and see what makes you tick, I believe he means we try and push your abilities. Figure out why they're so... afraid of you."
