"Maybe they don't like flannel? Ooh, maybe he's a defective Pantry-ness!" I pounded a fist into my palm. "Defective, but defective in a good way! Now all we gotta do is find a way to isolate that defect. Maybe we could isolate it, clone it, and release it en masse on the other Pantry-nesses???"
Wait, I know that voice. I looked up from my bowl of noodles and saw a very familiar mass of white hair...
"That can't be," I said, in disbelief, "Mr. Mercury, is that you?" I set my bowl down and made my way over to my teacher...
"Hey, Soly, I dare you to find a better idea then, otherwise we're split-"
"Mr. Mercury, what are you doing here?"
Okay, THAT made me fall out of my seat. Judging by Solace's reaction, I made quite the spectacle of it. "Ouchie," I said, climbing back up. "I was 'bout to ask you the same thing Leanne. What brings you here?"
"Long story short, a portal opened under us and now we're all here. Did that happen to you too?"
"Nope! I warped myself here!"

"NO. NO. NO. NOBODY'S GONNA-"
Toby looked up when the newcomer approached, finally noticing the headache he was getting from pulling on his own hair. Whoever this girl was, she seemed to know Lark.
Well... good for him!
Just get up... and slowly... walk away...

Solace raised a hand. "Before we do anything else psychotic around the poor, frightened boy," she glared at Lark, seemingly ignoring the newcomer. "...do the color of your eyes hold any significance to their kind? Does eyecolor at all hold a significance?"
Right after, she gave the new person a quick wave hello.

"So, how long you been here? And where are your brothers?"
"I've been here for a few days. And I can defend myself too!"
I shook a finger. "That kinda attitude gets ya killed ya know? I mean, what was the first thing I ever taught you?"
"Stay close enough to watch the enemy explode but far away enough to stay safe?"
"... Okay, what was the second thing I taught you then?"
"Overbrewing birch tea turns it into poison?"
"The third thing??"
"A dirty cauldron turns antidotes into anti-don'ts?"
"... Fourth thing." What was I teaching this kid again?
"Don't wander off alone, safety in numbers?"
"Yep! Why don't ya come with us?"
"Gladly," I said. "But I agree with the imp. Let's refrain from more psychotic methods on the boy."

"YES PLEASE," Toby gulped, standing up now and poised to sprint out of here if the need arose.
He blinked at Solace in moderate surprise, considering her question was one he had a legit answer for. "Um... Y-Yes, actually! A Præt'nos' eye color denotes which army they're in. Præt'nos with red eyes are in the Fire Army led by General Choleric. Yellow eyes represent the Earth Army led by Melancholic. Pale blue for Phlegmatic's Water Army. And white for the Air Army... Sanguine's army. I-I only know two exceptions to that rule. The supreme leader of the Præt'nos, Mistress Desire... her eyes apparently flash all four colors. The other is... the... Green-Eyed Præt'nos..."

Solace smiled. "One that isn't you?" she asked. "Do explain, this might just be the lead we needed."

"Why yes, you're apparently a defective Pantry-ness-"
"Præt'nos," I corrected. Apparently he still pronounciates everything new wrong.
"Præt'nos, Pantry-ness, whatever. Also, I noticed that they're all named after the four humours..."
"Sorry, he gets a little... out there..." I apologized in advance for whatever Mr. Mercury's about to say...
"Wouldn't that make ya Leukine?"

Toby bashfully averted his bright green eyes at Solace's question, deeply regretting bringing up the Green-Eyed Præt'nos at all. He didn't even like being referred to as such...
He wasn't sure what Lark was talking about. Toby really only had one thing to say to all of this. "...'m not a Præt'nos..."

"Clearly, but you're like one," Solace reminded him. "The faster we can figure out what it is that makes you so dangerous them, the better, I believe."

"Like it or not, Toby, you're a Pantry-ness do," I said, patting him perhaps a bit harder than necessary on the shoulder. "A defective one, maybe, but you're still one. And ya know what they say, right Leanne?"
"Don't go into mountains without a good supply of salt unless you want to be a gusluag's lunch?" They say that often in Ode.
"No, the thing about fighting fire with fire! Or in this case, fighting Pantry-nesses with a Pantry-ness of our own," I said with a chuckle. "But since we aren't gonna split ya open, how do we figure out what makes ya so special?"
"Maybe we could try some kind of probe?" I asked. "Miss Imp, do you have anything that could check him without hurting him?"

Toby frowned and swatted Lark's hand away, looking frustrated and ever so slightly fearful. "L-Look, I've more or less come to grips with my powers, but that doesn't make me one of them! ...Alright? I have more than enough human qualities to prove that I'm not a Præt'nos!"
He took a deep breath and calmed down considerably. "Nonetheless... if it's within my power to stop them from taking this island and its people... I-I wanna do whatever I can..."

Solace smiled, sipping down the rest of her cup of soup. "Fairly easy to do, actually," the horned woman smiled, hopping off of her chair. A small, sticky device was put on his forehead, Solace then beginning to type something into her device. "Hmm... give it a sec- okay, it's booted up."
An image of Toby's skeleton and organs would soon appear, on top of many, many scans on his various functions and what did what. She blinked a moment. "...wait... that doesn't seem right..." She moved the holographic screen where Toby could see. "Toby, would you mind explaining this to me?"

"Why yes, what is that?" I asked, pointing at the anomaly. "I mean, I know magic humans get wonky sometimes, and I know demon crosses tend to have a few extra bits here and there-"
"I have an extra kidney!"
"Yes, Leanne has an extra kidney, but I don't think that's what Soly's tryin' to say here..."

"MM-!" Toby twitched, then went rigid when Solace stuck the device on his forehead, not sure what was going on or what this was supposed to do. "Um... O-Okay...?"
He instantly paled up when Solace expressed confusion, filled with that sense of dread one felt when the doctor was about to deliver bad news. "W-What- What's wrong?"
Solace wanted an explanation. Lark was questioning the image. When it was showed to him, Toby was just... stumped. He wasn't worried, he was just confused what the problem was.
"W-What am I supposed to be looking at?"
He only asked because the holographic screen was COMPLETELY BLANK.

Solace nodded. "Precisely. It's what SHOULD be there, but isn't," she informed him. The Imp quickly pulled the device from his forehead, applying it to Leanne's head. It tingled a moment, but didn't harm her in any-way. An image of her body's internal frame soon appeared on the holographic pad, right down to the extra kidney. "Ah, you really do have an extra," Solace hummed, amused.
"THAT is the problem, Toby. That device scans the entire body- but your body isn't showing up on my readings at all. It's almost as though your body is-" She stopped, taking a moment to think. "...the only other species that showed this kind of anomaly are beings called Gems, but that's because they're a type of hologram with mass- literal living light. Though from that point of view, the only other thing that could do this is an exact opposite, making you... a... Shadow with mass..."
The jig was now up.
