Full Name: Ness
Nickname(s): Nessy, Goody two shoes, Annoying
Age: 17
Height: 5 foot 6
Weight: 180 pounds
Gender: Male
Race: PSI Human
Alliance: Good
Home: Eagleland (Though he has been living on Dimensional Island for close to four years.)
Franchise: Earthbound (or Mother 2)
Physical Description
In the times of Earthbound, Ness was an energetic and somewhat pudgy young child who still held onto a slight amount of baby chub and was fairly short for his age… However as the years passed during his and his friends extended sabbatical to Dimensional Island, Ness has grown a fair amount and is now at about the height of a normal teen, though slightly shorter then most ever still. Along with that, Ness is a healthy mix between lanky and sporting muscle, with black hair and brown eyes. While Ness will wear more than one shirt as per request by Paula, Ness is usually never seen without his trademark red cap with the ‘Onett Sparrows’ Baseball team logo prominently on the front, and the old backpack he used to store his items in his previous adventures.
Weapons and Accessories
- For close-range, up-close and personal weapons, Ness has a small collection of baseball bats. His most primary weapons however are his Homerun Bat which has a 90% chance to Critical hit most opponents, and the T-Rex Bat a ridiculously powerful weapon obtained during a return visit to Winters after Jeff talked about the brand bat. There are others, but Ness does not whip them out often and has once expressed plans to sell them for cash.
- Along with Baseball bats however, Ness can also equp Yo Yo’s for mid-range weaponry, weaponizing the stringed toy in ways even master Yo Yo Trick artists can only dream. The Yo yo’s themselves are not extremely sturdy but have saved Ness and his friends innumerous times in the past. The most prominent of these YoY o brands is the Trick Yo-Yo and the Combat Yo-Yo which are both very sturdy around the battering head. Once these fast weapons have even left small cuts from their intense swing speed. Needless to say, Ness is proud of his Yo-Yo collection for more then just tricks like Walking the Dog or the Pendulum.
- Perhaps the most useful tool in Ness’ repitiore however is one of the most versatile, even if it’s actual purpose seems narrow to initial perception. I’m speaking, of course, of the Mother Series ever present and most recognizable item, the Franklin Badge. As an accessory, the Franklin Badge is a sporty pin resembling a globe with an outer layer, that spells out ‘Franklin Badge’ for the logo. It has once been stated in Earthbound that the Franklin Badge received its name because the badge was once worn by Benjamin Franklin during his experiments with Electricity, the badge deflecting lightning bolts off of him once they struck his kite. And that is the Franklin Badge’s true purpose, the basic cure all of all energy based projectile attacks, PARTICULARLY electric and PSI based attacks. So long as Ness wears the badge, plasma, electric attacks, flame breath and even other energy or elemental projectiles beyond anyone’s intention are deflected away from the young man, OFTEN TIMES RIGHT BACK AT THE ATTACK’S USER to devastating results. With that in mind, no matter how simple the Franklin Badge might APPEAR, it is still an INVALUABLE tool in Ness’ arsenal and its practicality is the biggest reason it has remained in the Mother series as long as it has.
- Rounding out Ness' items is a simple cellular phone that he bought during his 4 year sabbatical on Dimensional Island. Thanks to some tinkering by Jeff, the phone can now serve as a direct means of communication to Ness' family back home, or any of the children's families. It is often shared amongst them.
Abilities/Powers
For all of his potential as a melee brawler with his baseball bats and Yo-Yo’s however, one can never argue that Ness’ most powerful capabilities lie with his powers of Psionics, or PSI (Or even PK) for short. In the history of Ness’ world, PSI originated from realms unknown in Outer Space, brought to Planet Earth by a mysterious young invader named as Giygas, named young due in part because the alien was young and impressionable and was adopted by a human couple on Earth. While he was young Giygas, while looked after lovingly, was convinced to give up the secrets of his own special capabilities, a fact that he was heavily punished for when he eventually returned home.
The powers of PSI is, very simply, VERY advanced mental telepathy that can be used to even manipulate the elements to one’s will, creating moves such as PK Fire, Thunder, Freeze, Magnet and even a simple mental energy beam that would resemble a blast of physical Kii energy. However, Ness takes his powers even FURTHER. Thanks in part to tuteledge in his abilities by Paula, his greatest strengths on the battlefield is that of a supporter role with some powerful attacks to defend himself all the while. It’s with this in mind that Ness is capable of PSI Healing arts which sends a powerful pulse of mental energy into another person’s body to speed up healing through sheer force of will, mixing it with a mysterious power that can close up scars and various wounds.
What sets Ness apart from his other support Paula, his technologically gifted Friend Jeff and his other offensive buddy Poo however is Ness’ NATURAL INTUNEMENT to PSI energy and in the various ways he can both heal and attack. After his first adventure, after using the power of the Eight Melodies (All shards of a magical song that Giygas’ adopted mother sang to him to lull him to sleep), Ness was able to enter into a realm deep within the inner recesses of his mind where he could confront and defeat a powerful personification of his inner demons, granting him an ENORMOUS amount of inner strength the likes of which none had seen prior to that point. It is with this power that Ness learned several new arts of PSI powers and became, arguably, one of the most powerful psychics of his time… And this power has only GROWN as he’s grown older.
The list of his abilities are as follows;
- PSI Rockin’ (An intensely powerful and Unique PSI ability exclusive to Ness, named after his love of the Rock and Roll, particularly the Runaway Five. In an intense show of psychokinetics and flashing colors, Ness can use this attack to blast large groups of enemies for set damage. The damage can only get more and more intense if he uses more powerful versions of this attack, often named after the Greek Alphabet; Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Omega.
- PSI Healing (Ness’ go to healing PSI, very effective, very bright, very optimistic. With this capability, Ness is capable of healing any small wounds or even effectively healing bigger ones. Either way, Ness’ healing arts are top notch and well sought after.)
- PSI Lifeup (Like Healing, but specially made arts for dealing with negative effects debuffs, like poison, paralysis, forced sleep, confusion, Nausea, Possession or even uncontrollable crying! Needless to say, if it needs curing, there’s an, AT LEAST, safe bet that Ness can somehow cure it.)
- Hypnosis (Exactly what it says on the tin, and just how powerful and how influential the Hypnosis is depends on how much power he puts behind it.)
- Paralysis (AGAIN exactly what it says on the Tin. Ness can send powerful brain waves to his targets, tricking the brain into thinking the body is locking up and incapable of moving.)
- PK Magnet (a very intriguing PSI ability that allows Ness to ABSORB oncoming projectile energy attacks as opposed to letting the Franklin Badge reflect it. When he takes the energy onto himself it can heal small wounds, restore some of the energy needed to use PSI attacks among other helpful buffs.)
- PK Fire (A skill he picked up in the last four years from Paula, and was among one of the many skills he carried over from his attendance to the Super Smash Bros Tournaments. Unlike in those tournaments however, Ness has long since learned how to use the upgraded versions of PK Fire. The Alpha version of PK Fire causes the bolt and small fire pillar we all know very well from the Smash Games while PK Fire Omega is a powerful explosion of flames at least half as powerful as a napalm bomb.)
- PK Thunder (Skills learned from both Paula and Poo. With this capability, Ness can fire out powerful lightning attacks that can range from either a guard breaking jolt of lightning, to a powerful blast capable of rendering large groups paralyzed. And since these attacks are electric in nature, they are naturally capable of piercing defenses.)
- PK Flash (In game, the PK Flash is a powerful one-hit kill move that rarely hits. But when it does? PHEW. In reality, the PK Flash can come in two flavors a powerful blast of mental energy that all but sends the mind into a sporadic state and forcing unconsciousness, or an even more powerful psychic burst that can actually BLAST APART SOLID CONCRETE AND EVEN SOME METALS.)
- PK Starstorm (A very recent new attack that Ness is attempting to learn from Poo. As the name suggests, PK starstorm is a powerful PSI attack that creates the illusions of meteors appearing out of thin air and slamming into the target repeatedly for incredible damage. The trade-off is that Ness does not yet know how to summon the attack on command and, even then, he can’t focus or control it (prompting memories as to how PK Starstorm was portrayed in Super Smash Bros Brawl.)
- PSI Teleport (Perhaps Ness’ most well known capability in Earthbound and over various media. It is an ability that is characterized by Ness running around in circles, slowly building up speed before he rushes straight forward moving so fast that he rips a hole in the space-time continuum, allowing him to teleport anwhere that Ness had visited previously… Though Ness does have trouble STOPPING his rush since the sheer friction can leave him and his friends covered with soot… However, The PSI Teleport does not have to be used for just it’s namesake, other popular sources of fan animation have also shown that the PSI Teleport can be used as a simple accelerator, allowing Ness to reach speeds similar to cars or even jet engines on FOOT.)
Weaknesses
For all of his powerful capabilities, one would think that Ness is utterly without weaknesses and is pretty much the ideal hero in that. However, such thoughts would be untrue. For all of his powers, all of his capability, and the enhanced endurance and speed, Ness is still VERY much human. Sure he’s EXTREMELY hard to kill either way, but that by no means makes him immortal. If he is ever separated from the Franklin Badge, he is left vulnerable to powerful projectile attacks more often then not since PSI Magnet only works if you see the projectile coming and cast it before it hits.
Even more then that, Ness may be sturdy physically and mentally, but that does not make him any less vulnerable to some PSI capabilities himself, such as Hypnosis and Paralysis, though he has been trying to overcome that vulnerability in recent years.
Skills
Outside of his PSI abilities, Ness is a skilled Baseball player and Yo-Yo trickster. While he hasn’t officially played on any sort of team, Ness has always considered the idea when things calmed down. Though unfortunately he has not yet found the safety or situation to do so.
Personality
Originally very emotional and very competitive, Ness was a very impetuous child that often found himself getting in lots of trouble on his own, getting into fights with people and creatures that attacked him first, or he had heard were hurting other people. However over the years, he learned general caring for more than just his friends and learned an importance in protecting anyone he came across. It was within his powers of course, so why not? Due to such, Ness is very mature for his age, somewhat wiser then his years might suggest, and can often keep a cool head to make decisions. He still has bouts of anger and indignation, but thankfully their few and far inbetween.
However if there existed one thing that will always get a rise out of him, it would be Porky Minch. The person that literally betrayed his entire homeworld for little reason at all then sheer jealousy for him and his newly found capabilities. A person that continuously tried to stab Ness in the back and would continuously try to kill him and his friends.
Porky is the reason Ness came to the island. So there is usually an air of serious business with Ness, though he can step back and enjoy things as they come when he feels at ease, particularly if he’s spending this time with his friends.
History
Even as a little kid, Ness has shown to know a good amount of his hidden potential for PSI; such as making his bottle come to him when he was just a baby, among other things. This stopped for a time… Before, when Ness was 13 years of age, one day, a meteor landed in the hillside behind his home. When prompted by his next door neighbor Pokey to go, (Though he was just about to go himself however) the two discover that the Meteor was used as a type of vehicle by a mysterious PSI using warrior named Buzz Buzz, whom prophesized the worlds destruction, unless the chosen hero acted.
And that hero was Ness himself.
Many events came and gone after that, Ness collecting the eight magical melodies around his world, making friends with Paula Polestar, Jeff Andonuts, and Poo, and eventually defeating the cause of his worlds downfall; Giygas. After everything was said and done, Ness returned home for the first time in a while, ready to kick back and relax…
However, before he could do as such, he receives a rather ‘threatening note’ from Pickey Minch that was written by his missing brother Pokey. With the note in hand, he started a new adventure to find his neighbor, and put a stop to whatever mischief he was up to.
Ness spent the next 4 years on Dimensional Island with his friends looking around for Porky Minch… Only to discover with a great deal of fear that not only was the little brat on the island and causing trouble… So TOO was Giygas, the great evil they had sacrificed so much just to defeat the FIRST time around a year previous. The four spent increased time on the island as they looked for ways to defeat Giygas, eventually doing so by sealing him away in the haunted manor in the Ghost town. Unable to return home however, the four made the difficult decision to settle down on the Island and keep an eye open for Porkey Minch. Unknowing that the brat had already somehow left the island and was now back home, wreaking havoc in the far future……
Other
The history is loosely based off of the story created by Ness’ original writer on the site, MrSaturn123, whom had both Ness, Giygas and a number of other Earthbound Characters. Though the story here is tailored to play with the continuity, it does leave a lot open to interpretation.
