Physical Description
Alaric is a tall man, about 6'1, with an athletic build, formed by his rigorous training. He has minimal body fat, and is in peak physical condition. He has short, light brown hair that is usually gelled on the top of his head, and this is often the first way to tell if he's been out in the wilderness for long periods of time-- he won't have the time or materials to do it out in the wild, and so it will be much longer and more haggard. He has a light stubble, and caucasian skin. He wears primarily dark colors, though he has white dress shirts for important occasions. Despite working out, his shoulders are not especially broad, and his build is toned, rather than bulky. He usually has a fairly neutral expression, and though he rarely gives big goofy grins or anything, when he smiles, even though his mouth is usually only moving slightly, his eyes shine through with kindness and sympathy. He carries himself straight and tall, as befitting a member of the prestigous Hellsing family.
Weapons::
Although Alaric is fully capable of customizing his loadout, he does carry with him spme standardized gear. His standard loadout is as follows:
+M1911 Silenced Pistol, modified to fire customized rounds (see below)
-Wooden Stake Bullets: These are essentially bullets made of wood that have been whittled into miniature stakes. For added effect, a crucifix has been carved into each of them, and they have been doused in Holy Water.
-Silver Bullets. Self explanatory.
+White Ash Stake: The most efficient tool for killing vampires, Alaric almost always carries a total of three White Ash stakes on his person at any given time.
+Holy Water Bomb: This is essentially a low power explosive, that is filled with holy water. Extremely effective against vampires.
+Wolfsbane Bomb: Another low yield explosive that releases a cloud of ground wolfsbane into the air when thrown-- extremely effective against werewolves.
+Silver dagger: He always carries two on the inside of his coat.
+Iron dagger: A backup weapon, exclusively meant for use against the Fae, should he run afoul of them.
+Silver Crucifix: For protection against vampires.
Abilities/Powers
+Supernatural Detection: Thanks to a magical seal tattoo'd below his right shoulderblade, Alaric can detect the presence of supernatural beings, however this only serves as a general alarm system, and does not specify the exact location, nor does it tell him what kind of supernatural being or phenomenon it is. It is effective within a 100 meter radius.
+Resistance to compulsion: While not entirely immune, Alaric has been trained to resist vampiric compulsion. He can overcome the compulsion of weaker vampires, and while he cannot stop being compelled by more powerful vampires, he is still more difficult to compel, and is capable of defying the compulsion in minor ways, or even creating loopholes (For example if he is compelled by a vampire to kill Bob at 1817 Cherry Lane, he may be able to prevent himself from killing Bob anywhere EXCEPT that specific location, or simply avoid ever going to that location to meet Bob).
Weaknesses
While Alaric possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of monsters and how to kill them, he is still only human. A very fit human, yes, but still only human. He cannot match the physical strength or ferocity of many monsters or their other supernatural powers in a head on confrontation. Therefore, Alaric must often rely on catching monsters offguard or setting traps for them in order to get the kill. While it is not impossible to defeat one in a head on battle, it is extremely difficult, and if Alaric loses the element of surprise he is at a severe disadvantage.
Skills
+Monster knowledge: Alaric possesses an extensive and comprehensive knowledge of most monster species. While his specialty is in Vampires and Lycanthropes, that only means he can pick up the signs of these groups and quickly differentiate between them the fastest. Given sufficient time, he can identify various specters, Fae, demons and other supernatural entities and is aware of many of their weaknesses, he merely needs more time to cross-reference them.
+Martial Arts: Alaric is well trained in Krav Maga and Boxing.
Personality
Alaric has a reserved personality. He doesn't actively go out to make friends, but he is not heartless or cold. He's a good listener, and will nod and provide understanding to those who need it, but he's almost never going to be the first to offer, and will only be there for you if nobody else will be. In this way he's always a reliable fallback for people, but never a first choice. He's sympathetic to the plights of others and has something of a bleeding heart, which has led him into his current view on non-humans which is extremely unorthodox for a monster hunter.
Alaric judges monsters by their actions, not by who they are. While most of his kindred would kill a lycanthrope or vampire on sight, he is, for the most part, willing to at least talk to them and get to know them first. Though this should not be confused for naivete. Alaric still errs on the side of caution and even when interacting with monsters, is always certain to never let his fingers stray far from the nearest stake, or object that can be quickly turned into a stake. He also does not let personal feelings get in the way of his job. Regardless of how much he may have bonded with someone or even something, when Alaric decides that you're a threat to humanity, he will kill you without hesitation, even if he may lament having to do so after the fact.
Alaric is highly focused on efficiency, and always looks for the best route towards solving a problem. This often clashes with his goal of protecting people from that which lurks in the shadows, but he does what he can to compromise between the two ideologies. This is reflected in his vampire hunting gear, which he has emphasized with a level of modern tactics. In his mind, classical approaches to slaying supernatural monsters, like staking a Vampire are extremely unreliable, as to stake a vampire that is prepared, you generally have to get close to it, and contend with the creature's superhuman strength and agility, as well as its experience and cunning-- an arduous task for even a veteran vampire hunter. Alaric therefore values the use of traps, planning and outwitting the creature, using unorthodox killing tactics that his prey will not see coming, such as firing miniature wooden stakes from a gun.
While Alaric possesses a code of honor, he is NOT bound by it, and is free to break it or lie when he believes it necessary. He still tries to be an honest man, but when push comes to shove, he is not concerned about honesty, when pragmatism is more useful to his goal. Unlike the classical trickster archetype, who usually leaves a grain of truth in their lies, when necessary, Alaric will simply use blatant untruths to get what he wants. When it comes to his job, he is professional and ruthless. Codes of honor and such is all well and good for the living, but it will not avail him if he is dead. Alaric is a practical man, and he means to keep it that way. He will stick to the straight and true when able to, but it is sometimes said that it is easy to be honorable when nothing is at stake, and only a few men can hold fast to their ideals when they stand at risk of losing something if they do. While Alaric may pass or fail this test on a case by case basis, he will generally tend towards failing that standard when things get intense, and he will leave honor by the wayside in favor of practicality.
As an aside, Alaric is fond of alcohol and is a great drinking buddy.
History
The Helsing name is well known in the community of monsters, ever since the patriarch of the family, Abraham Van Helsing, defeated Dracula, the King of the Night. It is a name that commands respect among the most powerful of monsters in the night, and fear in the hearts of weaker beasts. Since Abraham destroyed Dracula, the Helsing family have taken up secret lives as monster hunters. Doctors who believe in the power of knowledge, they have gleaned knowledge of dozens of different types of monsters over the centuries and are well equipped to handle them, their methods evolving with each generation.
But none have taken it so far as Alaric Helsing, the next heir to the family name. Since childhood he was reared to have a double life. One as a respected aristocrat son of the family, and a second one in which he was trained in the arts of fighting the darkest monsters that the Helsing family knew of. Werewolves, vampires, ghosts, devils, the fae. Many creatures had come to light over the years and the Helsing family, believing that knowledge was power, learned all they could. Night after night, Alaric went out with his father. He practiced stealth, martial combat and marksmanship. He learned alchemy, and how to brew a variety of mixtures that were harmful to the undead. He studied botany, so that he could identify a white ash tree on sight, and know where wolfsbane grew. He would spend his days pouring over ancient encyclopedias of the high life, and his nights studying for tests. Every aspect of his body was honed for his task, for a Hunter needed to be able to live two lives in flawless synchronization, lest the mortal world discover the truth of monsters.
Many of the Helsing family opt to specialize in certain monsters. If this were the case, then Alaric could have had a doctorate in dealing with lycanthropes and vampires, and would have the equivalent of a minor in dealing with specters. He could not only identify the sure signs of the presence of these creatures, but he could even differentiate between different types of vampires or werewolves, and was familiar with the attributes and abilities of each. If it came right down to it, he might even be able to guess at whether or not it was a juvenile, experienced or even ancient vampire.
He went further than many of his family, adopting modern, 21st century strategies to dealing with the creatures. Alaric was a genius at tinkering. An early invention of his was modifying a Desert Eagle pistol to fire wooden rounds without significantly deforming or damaging the bullet upon firing. Then, with some work, he was able to use some careful whittling to turn those wooden bullets into small stakes, that, upon his first attempt on a vampire on one night during his teenage years, proved effective. Pursuing this medium, Alaric began to experiment with a variety of methods of applying the weaknesses of the monsters he and his family fought. A silver bullet was no longer the only weapon in his arsenal. He devised explosives containing holy water and wolfsbane, a spring-loaded contraption the deliver a wooden stake with the motion of a punch.
But all of this was only the prelude to Alaric's calling. His training was only the beginning. Overseen by his family, they allowed for his eccentricities, for they made Alaric more effective and more dangerous. But until his 16th birthday his hunting had always been done with the protection of his family. Now he would begin his hunting anew. A magical brand was placed on his body, below his right shoulderblade, which marked him as an initiate. It heightened Alaric's intuition when dealing with the supernatural, and acted as a limited alert system when a supernatural being was near. However, the Hellsing family, not wishing to be reliant on the arcane arts, limited it to only this. It would let Alaric know when a supernatural creature was near. It would not tell him anymore than that. His training and skills would have to do the rest. And so the heir of the Hellsing household went off into the world, spelling a decade of terror for all monsterkind that would threaten humans.
For ten years Alaric hunted. He grew talented at the craft, but practicing the art of monster slaying was very different when executing it as a lone agent. Certainly, he occasionally picked up help, and surprisingly, the Church was often of use, for many inner sects of the Holy Order was familiar with the Hellsing family and their works. Secret sects, of course. But for the most part, Alaric worked alone, slaying his way across Europe. But working alone gave Alaric perspective, and he began to understand the minds of many monster communities. He began to understand the minds of monsters. All were dangerous of course, but from time to time he would encounter those that did their best to refrain from harming others. The occasional vampire who lived by taking only what they needed, and avoided killing their victims. Others who used hospital blood bags, and a rare handful that sought out animal blood instead of human blood. Indeed he even encountered one vampire who was seeking to create synthetic blood. Unfortunately the creature in question was quite mad, and its aims to create a synthetic blood in place of real blood was not out of any sense of goodwill towards humans and interest in co-existing, but rather an attempt to rid the vampire race of the need to survive on humans entirely, and allow them free reign to exterminate the race. Yes, Alaric staked that one. But the point of the matter, was that Alaric encountered vampires that tried to restrain themselves. Tried to find another way. And in communities that sprung up within and around such monsters, he often found that they followed suit. And Alaric quickly devised a new theory to protecting mankind from the nightcrawlers.
His theory was based on a rough carrot and stick ideology. That by sparing and encouraging vampires to adopt non-harmful practices, and only eliminating those that actively hunted humans, he could begin to propogate the meme within vampiric society that it would be more beneficial to co-exist with humanity in a non-harmful way. Killing every vampire in existence was a near impossibility. But if he could kill just enough of the "right" vampires, perhaps he could push their cultural identity in such a way that he could promote a long term solution. Taking this theory into consideration, Alaric, bit by bit, adjusted his focus, and began his new objective, and aimed to do his part to convince other Hunters of the same.
In pursuit of his goal, he has traveled far and wide, and ultimately found himself here.
