Infestation: Possession. Can be performed by an angel, demon, or magical human, so long as they can mentally overpower their victim and have the magical aptitude to pull off the magic. “Bugs” the possessee, allowing the possessor to control their actions from a distance. Note that this literally puts a bug (typically a hairy moth) into the victim as the “controller” for the possessor. Can typically be cured via forcing the bug out of the victim (usually by physical violence towards the stomach), although depending on the strength of the possessor and the mental fortitude of the possessee, there may still be lingering effects; this only severs the controlling aspect. Comes in two types. There’s also a third branch, but it’s only been used twice in recorded history.
-Standard Infestation: Can be performed on living victims, as well as the freshly deceased (less than 6 hours). If done to a fresh corpse, movements will be erratic and connection will be shaky, so living people are preferred. Can be purged via violence directed at the victim’s stomach, or any “Blessing of the…” type spell. The easier type, but still a high-level spell.
-Postmortem Infestation: Can only be performed on corpses over 12 hours old; as such, angels and demons cannot be hit with this due to their nature of death. Allows perfect control over the victim’s actions, with no internal resistance. Corpse will cease rotting for duration of infestation, with the only sign being a more pallor skin tone. Removal of the bug, or killing the victim’s body through any means that would kill the original individual will cause infestation to end, and the body to disintegrate into dust. An extremely high-level spell with an average death rate of 50%.
-Type Three Infestation: Turning a standard infestation into a case of postmortem infestation by means of forcing the victim to kill themselves and holding onto control of the body for long enough. Corpse is then tainted with the essence of the possessor, granting the body the powers of the possessor alongside whatever abilities the host may have. It is theorized that should the possessor have no physical body and exist as a spirit, they will take the host as their new physical body. Has only been used twice throughout recorded history, by the same individual. All others who have attempted this magic have died by multiple organ failure.
Blessing of the… Spell: Special angelic magic, can only be used by those of the original bloodline. Purges most impurities from a body, including standard infestation. Is always “cast from HP,” so to speak.
-Blessing of the Flames: Can also be used to help focus anger into a productive means.
-Blessing of the Land: Can also be used to calm negative emotions and focus on a task at hand.
-Blessing of the Sky: Can also be used to get a person moving again.
-Blessing of the Sea: Can also be used to open a person’s mind, letting them see the answer clearly.
-Blessing of the Sun: Combines Flames, Land, Sky, and Sea, as well as granting the recipient protection against magic specifically directed at them.
-Blessing of the Moon: Combines Flames, Land, Sky, and Sea, as well as reflecting all mind-altering effects towards the recipient back at their caster.
Seal of the Seven: A magical seal, a creation of a former Serapis to keep the beast of Empyrea intact. At any given point, up to seven individuals are alive, acting as living locks on the monster. Most are not aware of their nature as locks.
-Flame Lock: A fire elemental, or a fire-oriented mage. Whereabouts and race are currently unknown.
-Land Lock: An earth elemental, or an earth-oriented mage. Presumed to be dead, second seal is currently open.
-Sky Lock: A wind elemental, or a wind-oriented mage. Lock was broken by means of an unknown saboteur; even if the lock is alive, this seal is already broken.
-Sea Lock: A water elemental, or a water-oriented mage. Whereabouts and race are currently unknown.
-Sun Lock: The most recent member of the Worcester line. Current lock is Percy Worcester, last seen in Ode, Saia.
-Moon Lock: A shadow elemental. Current lock is Sophi Chandra.
-Heaven Lock: The failsafe lock. Role as lock seven only comes into place should the other six be broken. Known to be a relative of the seal’s creator.
Solomon’s Barrier: A magic seal keeping the demons trapped in the Inferno, only permitting one exit for thirty days every century. Cannot be crossed by demons on either end of the seal except for that one period. Has weakened since its creation over 10,000 years ago. Can freely be crossed by angels and humans, including part-demons. Its destruction is Malebolge’s chief goal.
Archangel: An angel that has lived at least 10,000 years and in possession of extraordinary power. Title can also be bestowed on the most stalwart warriors after 7,000 years of battling. Known archangels include Caladrius, Turul, and Valravn.
Archdemon: A demon that has lived at least 6,616 years, who has demonstrated power, cunning, and strength of character. Known archdemons include Malebolge and Salsu.
Beast of Empyrea, name to be forgotten: An unknown entity residing in the Empyrea region of Paradiso, currently kept in check by the Seal of the Seven. Said to be omnipotent and omniscient, those who see its face are said to lose their minds. Currently grants wishes to those who step foot into Empyrea… At the cost of an equal amount of pain inflected on the wisher. Saying its true name incites insanity in those who hear it. Or does it?
Original Bloodline: Can be traced back to the creator of the Seal of the Seven. Those of this bloodline can use “Blessing of the…” spells, are stronger than others of otherwise equal type, and can name others as locks should any be unoccupied. The hero that defeated and sealed away Necro was part of this lineage.
Imprisonment Curse: The spell that separated Necro from his body and forced him to become a spirit, his body being destroyed in the process. The vase that once housed his soul has very recently been shattered, releasing him into the world once again… Provided he can get his body back so he doesn’t have to resort to infesting people.
Cosmic Angel: An extremely rare subspecies of angel; all members are either hiding their powers or dead. All possess dark wings, the ability to survive in the vacuum of space, infinite cold resistance (but not to ice damage or complaining), teleportation, and the ability to weaponize celestial bodies and galaxies. It’s theorized that this was an evolutionary adaptation…
Fell Contract: A pact made between a human and a demon. In exchange for a portion of the demon’s magic and power, the demon will receive the human’s soul and/or body once the contract is up or is breached by the human. The use of the body allows the demon to extend their reach to Purgatorio, while the soul is used for power in the Inferno. Most part-demons are the result of a snatched human body procreating with a normal human.
Hemobond: A process by which a human takes some of the blood of an angel or demon, empowering the human and their future descendents. However, these always curse the direct line of descent to die young, typically in childbirth (for daughters) or by sudden heart attack (for sons).
Fallen: A term used to describe angels who have left Paradiso and/or made a contract with a demon. Used as a means to “dehumanize” them by those who remain loyal.
Revenant: A being that was killed, but their soul refuses to let their body die. However, the body is only as strong as it was at “death,” and the normal rate of decay occurs. An especially determined soul, however, could resist or even halt the decay, becoming stronger with age.
Rabid Soul: A pelt or pelt mix that has given up entirely to their bestial side and is intellectually comparable to a wild animal. Rabid Soul dragon pelts are especially a danger in this state and putting them down is considered a top priority.
Fox Clan: A pelt clan consisting of fox-shifters, living on Mount Ijuf near the Death Forest. Unlike most other clans, they base their hierarchy based on tail count rather than cunning. Their current leader is Obsidian, the first nine-tail in some time.
Dragon Clan: A pelt clan that scatters its numbers throughout Purgatorio. Aloof and independent, dragons command respect from all other pelt clans due to their power. They have no central leader, which each local tribe picking its own chief.
Ode Bounty Hunters: The largest bounty hunter guild, founded and led by Mort Isaac. Being accepted as a trainee is considered a high honour, graduating moreso. Current members include the Lowe family, Percy Worcester, and Sylvia. Former members include Seeker, Flint, and Val.
