In the dead of night, in a far corner of the city, a symphony of pure terror rang out. Screams of pain and unbridled fear. Cacophonies of crashes and collisions. Ear-splitting screeches as an ungodly abomination rampaged through the streets, leaving ruin and destruction in its wake. Dust and smoke filled the air as buildings toppled and burned. Blood and debris littered the ground as the hapless citizens found themselves caught up in the chaos. Still the monster marched forth, its grotesque form beyond words, unidentifiable and unexplainable to the human mind, enough to invoke madness in the souls that gazed upon it.
And then, all at once, it seemed to stop. The monster vanished. The city grew silent.
From the cloud of ash emerged a lone black cat, desperately scrambling out of the rubble and making a mad dash for the cemetery...
Far from the horrific display leftover from the monster's attack, the little black cat slowed to a halt in front of the cemetery gate, looking back with its fur standing on end and its bright orange eyes wide with panic. So much destruction, so much fear... it had barely escaped it all in one piece, and it knew better than to try going back. While that beast might have been out of sight and out of mind, there were even more monsters roaming the city. Even for a black cat, that was too big a nightmare to deal with.
As such, ever alert, the cat faced forward again and trotted into the graveyard, following the winding path wherever it may lead. It looked to the sky, darkened by the fog, shrouding the land in a dark, sickly shade of purple. It looked around at the rolling hills of death and decay, chilled to the core by every small, faint noise it heard from every tree and behind every headstone.
It slowed to a halt near a puddle, cautiously approaching it and staring at the dim outline and glowing eyes of its reflection.
For the longest time, the cat could only gaze at the animal staring back at it from the water.
What... was this thing...?
