(A/N: Spoilers for Thor: Ragnarok have been redacted. Those who have seen the movie may highlight to read the text.)
Soon enough, Loki found himself sitting in a small, rustic and surprisingly homey tavern, casually slumped over the bar with his cheek in his hand. He hadn't spoken much to his present company since their arrival. He just sat there staring at his untouched pint of brown ale. Granted, this was his fourth one, so no one was really bothering to question why he wasn't drinking this one. If anything, they might've been more wary about the fact that he didn't even seem the least bit tipsy. Just heavily distracted.
The last few hours had been replaying in Loki's head over and over, and the longer he dwelled on them, the more irritated he became...
First Thor came home and somehow managed to deduce that Odin was him in disguise. Loki hated to admit it, but in hindsight, maybe that was his own fault. Those few short years on the throne of Asgard had been such bliss that maybe he had gotten lazy and let his guard down. Or maybe that fire demon that Thor had defeated and stolen the crown of tipped him off. He really hoped that was the case. It would've made him feel a lot less foolish.
Then he had to take Thor to Earth to retrieve Odin. That blasted sorcerer left him trapped in free fall in another dimension for thirty minutes... an encounter that his blood was still boiling from... to be abused like that... as if that witless human thought his magic could in any way stack up to Loki's...! And then they found Odin, and for what? To be told that Thor was not Odin's first born, then watch him die. In a way, Loki almost felt cheated, having traveled to Midgard solely to be humiliated and told bad news.
And then... she showed up. Loki's face briefly, repeatedly twisted into a scowl every time her smug, condescending order to kneel echoed in his mind. He had wanted so badly to ensure her that she had absolutely no chance at ruling, having been sealed away by Odin for centuries and forgotten by time. But then he watched her shatter Mjolnir with her bare hand, and as embarrassing as it was to admit, even Loki knew he was out of his league against this witch.
And look where his hasty decision to escape her reach had gotten them. She was more than likely in Asgard, beginning her reign of terror. Thor... Who knew where Thor was? (And for that matter, who really cared? Not him.) And here Loki was, sitting in a tavern at the center of the multiverse, utterly defeated with no chance at stopping this new threat, drowning his sorrows in ale.
He supposed there were worse places to be, but still... Loki couldn't help but feel pathetic. Maybe even more so than he did after his failed conquest of Midgard. At least then he had made it clear that he was willing to put up a fight for what he wanted. This? This was just cowardly. Even he couldn't deny that.
