Run. Run. Run. I have to get away. I have to get away from everybody else. It's the only way to ensure I won't hurt anyone else.
With half his vision denied to him, Percy blindly rushed through the cemetery. The place where he had transformed into that... thing... for the second time. Why the cemetery, he asked briefly. He didn't know. He felt a compulsion to be here. They both had death in common, he guessed? At least he couldn't hurt people that were already dead and buried.
He paused, looking around. Gods... he wasn't going to get used to having one eye soon. It had to be somewhere! It just had to! He felt it the last time he was here! Shaking, Percy pulled his hood over his head. At least if he was being followed, he could try to mask his identity. Gods, you're so fucking stupid.
His breaths were ragged, reaching around the interior of his coat. Okay, they were still there. He just grabbed the first thing in a suspicious container he saw. He assumed it was poison. He just needed to make sure nobody could reanimate his corpse. The last thing people needed was a truly mindless monster attacking them. Okay, that wouldn't be the first time he was mindless.
"I-Imago..." Gods, his throat was so sore. It barely sounded like him. "Where is it...?" Silence. The damn bug hadn't said a word since he came to. "I'm sorry... maybe... nevermind..."
The brunette figure yelped, hair standing on end underneath the hood. Somebody was here. She was here. "Oh, fuck..." Looking down, he began running towards a deeper hole in the ground. It had to be the hole.
Percy ran blindly into the opening. He didn't notice that the walls seemed to be curving, forming an almost perfect loop. All that mattered was that he got away from her. Away from everyone.

In the dark of the cave, a shadow lashed out from a crevice the wall and smacked the jar out of Percy's hand, letting it smash on the floor and spill its contents into the dirt.
At the same time, another shadow reached up from the floor, wrapped around Percy's ankle, and yanked his leg out from underneath him, sending him smacking face-first into the cold, hard ground.
"Where are you off to in such a hurry?"
The voice that preceded its owner had no tone. It wasn't confused. It wasn't concerned. It didn't even sound angry. It carried with it the low drone of someone who had abandoned all emotion. Of someone who already knew the answer to the question that had been asked but was simply letting the weight of that question hang in the air.
With the soft crunching of her footsteps echoing through the tunnels, Kelsey stepped closer to the young man on the ground. Her arms hung at her sides, and yet the shadow she had coiled around the poor sod's leg held its grip. Her wings, horns, teeth, claws and spines had long since retracted, leaving her ice blue snake eyes as the sole remnant of her other self. The glowing orbs cast a dim light in the darkness, but their hollow gaze remained fixed on Percy.
For a moment, the demon-eyed girl in bloody pajamas simply stood over the young man with an empty expression nearly impossible to read, letting the silence build until the tension was practically tangible.
"Well?"

"Gah-!"
Something smacked the jar out of his hands. Something ensnared his ankle to the ground. Pain. That was pain. He spat out a tooth and some blood. At least I still bleed, Percy thought, tasting the metallic fluid in his mouth. He looked up, seeing glowing, blue, snakelike eyes. It was her. But she felt... different...
He exhaled. Gods, even his breathing sounded raspy. A side effect of breathing whatever it was, he guessed. He looked up, purple eye scared. A stream of dried, red blood ran down where the other eye would have been, covering the blue mark. Once his breathing stopped, he responded in a low tone.
"I don't need to answer you. You already know."
There was a flash of pink light, illuminating the cave briefly. Percy felt the shadows that ensnared him loosen. This was it. Taking advantage of his temporary freedom, the brunette fled further into the twisting cave. There was something at the end of the tunnel. Something calling him.
If you wish to take the coward's way out, so be it, my knight. But know that this is not an escape.
"Then let me be a coward." This wasn't directed at the conspicuously-silent Imago, nor at Kelsey. Rather, it seemed directed at another voice that only he seemed to hear. The same one he heard when he transformed again...

Kelsey flinched and turned her head away from the light, blue eyes tightly shut. Once the pink glow behind her eyelids faded, she slowly reopened them and turned back around. Her eyes readjusted to the darkness almost immediately, but Percy was already gone.
She let out a deep, disappointed sigh. "They always have to do it the hard way."
Her wings burst from her back. She raised her arms slightly, fingers spread wide. A great gust of wind blew through the tunnel, sweeping Kelsey up along with it like an insect in a vacuum cleaner. Effortlessly gliding on the gale, she navigated through the dark passage, gracefully curving with every twist and turn, her tremendous speed never faltering. Finally she caught up to Percy again, soaring over his head and letting the sudden burst of wind knock him off balance.
As the breeze died down, Kelsey retracted her wings again and landed, planting herself in front of Percy, blocking the path he had been taking. The look she shot him differed very little from the empty stare she had given him prior, only narrowed ever so slightly like the glare of a frustrated mother.
"Yeah. I know. But I wanna hear you say it."

Gods. Someone's as hardheaded as I am.
Scowling, seeing that this demon girl in bloodied pajamas was clearly not going to let him get to the other side, Percy glared at Kelsey, weak though it was. Why was she so concerned for a monster?! Why did she care?! If she had any decency, she would have just torn out his heart when he transformed!
And yet, he couldn't find it in him to really hate her. His glare softened, back into a defeated expression. He looked down. Silence. The little light that made it past her showed just his bare, slightly bloody feet. Exhale.
"... Please." He sounded desperate. "Please. Just let me through. I promise I'll tell you everything once we're on the other side. Please... please just let me pass."
Pathetic.

"Why?"
Despite her cold, irked expression, Kelsey's voice was calm. Level. Restrained. She was too mentally and emotionally exhausted to get too incredibly angry. Frustrated, maybe, but at the very least, it didn't seem like she was about to blow up. Yet.
She stood her ground, the shadows writhing around her like tentacles reaching to embrace both her and Percy. Her fists clenched for a moment, then slowly loosened up as she took a deep breath. "I'm not beyond reasoning. We can talk this out like adults. But why do we have to cross this boundary first? Don't you think we have enough bulls*** on our plate as it is without launching ourselves balls-out into the unknown?"
Kelsey took a few steps closer to Percy, standing tall and firm, her body language commanding and just the tiniest bit threatening. "Take it from me, Percy. Self-destruction won't help anyone."

Exhale. A shudder. Inhale. Exhale. "... Very well. Have it your way. Headstrong..."
Percy looked up at Kelsey, eyes closed. Inhale.
"♫ All your sweet and hollowness, goodbye, Going down the crossing with... doubt. ♫"
A song, even with his ragged breaths.
"♫ Turn our heads around or brave these seas? Turn our heads around or brace this quest? ♫"
His lip quivered. He was trying not to cry, it seemed.
"♫ Even take in all the pain and loss. Peace will come to the seat of those who come... ♫"
He stopped after, looking up at Kelsey. "... That night in the plaza... when I transformed for the first time... when I almost killed you... this song entered my head. Thing is, it felt like I had heard it before. Between this feeling... and my ability to transform into that... thing... I'm debating just how human I really am. Mort and Imago, a lot of people tell me about how great a person my mother was, that I look so much like her... But when it comes to my dad, there's nothing. I-I'm afraid... What if those weren't freak accidents? What if it's in the blood? I'm afraid I'm going to go on a rampage like that again. I'm afraid that I'll actually kill someone... Will, Jordan, Leanne... Lobo, Loba... you, Paul, Raunen..."
Percy's ears drooped, expression fallen. "... I'm sorry if I'm being melodramatic. Or if this makes even a lick of sense."

Kelsey tightly closed her eyes and let out a slow, deep exhale through her nose, listening to Percy's songs with what could only be described as exasperation. It wasn't quite apathy, but it was certainly close. Even as Percy went on to explain himself properly, Kelsey kept her eyes closed, her posture loose, and her expression distant and irritated, as if she had displaced herself from this present moment and gotten lost in some unpleasant dream. She offered nary a response to anything Percy had to say, bringing to question whether or not she was listening and what, if any, effect his words had on her.
Eventually, she opened her eyes into a scowl, their cold, blue glow filling the cavern once again. She took another deep breath through her nose, keeping her lips pursed in an apprehensive grimace. Her gaze seemed to pierce through Percy's single eye, scrutinizing the very soul behind it.
When Kelsey spoke, her voice was almost hoarse. Shaky. Low. Barely her own.
"You knew."
Her eyes trailed down to her feet as she numbly started etching a pattern into the dirt with her toe. A circle etched with fiery scribbles. Inside it, a crescent moon. Inside that, a pentagram.
"You... knew this whole time..." Her voice softened a bit into something still cold and emotionally detached, but at least a little more familiar. "And you didn't bother telling us."
Kelsey's head jerked back up, turning her glare on Percy again. Her foot slammed down on her drawing; the gesture didn't seem to disturb the image in the slightest.
"And what exactly did you think that would accomplish, hmm? Did you think we would all just go along our merry way, never questioning where you keep disappearing to or where this thing came from?" She began a slow pace, her volume steadily increasing with every sentence...
"Tell me something. When has hiding a secret with that kind of destructive capacity ever worked out for anyone, be it the person keeping it or the people they're trying to 'protect' in doing so? Y'know what, no, don't answer that, because I can tell you right now that it never... works. If you actually gave a sh*t about protecting us from this side of you, you could've told us! Prepare us for whatever fresh hell awaited us the next time something like that happened! What, is it a shame thing?! If any of these guys can genuinely call themselves your friend, they would've tried to find a way to make the most of this situation! To HELP you! You think you're too dangerous that we couldn't handle the truth about you?! NEWS FLASH... WE'RE ALL DANGEROUS! I lie awake every night in contemplation... in fear of the power in my blood, knowing that I'm just as capable of killing my friends as I am my enemies! AND YOU THINK YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE WITH THE CAPACITY TO BE A MONSTER?! I NEARLY RIPPED YOUR F*CKING BRAIN STEM OUT!!! I THINK I DESERVE TO KNOW WHO I'M HURTING!!!"
Kelsey eventually came to a halt, pausing to breathe and calm herself back down, frustrated tears slipping down her cheeks. Then she turned back to Percy, continuing at the same tone she started out with, struggling to keep her voice from cracking...
"Look, I'm not gonna act like I one hundred percent understand what you have going on, but I can tell you this much. Something that I had to learn the hard way. You have no control. No one does. And you'll never be whole until you accept that. Hell, I haven't even reached that level of acceptance yet. But until you come to grips with the chaotic nature of not only the reality you live in, but the conflicting forces within your own soul, then yes, you're just as liable to lose your mind to that chaos as you say you are. But that's no excuse to run not only from the people who care about you and want to see you though this, but from your own damn self. That's just a sh*tty, inconsiderate, cowardly thing to do. It's not gonna help us fix this mess, and it's definitely not going to help you figure out who or what you are. You... DENSE MOTHERF*CKER."

Oh, that's it.
Percy's fist clenched, and his expression changed. The muscles in his face tightened, meeting Kelsey's snakelike eyes, his pupil narrowing to a similar slit, ears rolling back. "And you think I asked to be this?" He gestured to his ears, hair antennae. "That I asked to be a crime against nature, or God, or Buddha, or Ra, or who slash whatever higher power may or may not exist, the bastard?"
Despite his sore throat, and sore everything, he continued. "I didn't fucking ask for any of this. Okay, you nearly tore out my brain stem! Big deal, you're not the first guy who tried to do that to me! Okay, I'm not the only fucker who could wipe out everything! Gee, that's just fucking comforting, knowing that our friends have double the chance of being killed by their own ally!" A spiral of pink light arose around Percy's ankles, swirling up around his body. "Yeah, I fucking knew that was me, ever since Loba restored some semblance of my mind with her song! I was terrified! Terrified of how you'd fucking react!"
The pink light took on the appearance of water droplets as it rose, a wind picking up around the brunette. "It doesn't fucking matter. I've seen that look before. Do you think I'm a freak, too?! Congrats, you'd get along great with my foster father! He'd give me that same fucking look every time he saw me! I didn't understand why, but now I fucking get it! He knew I'd turn into that thing and thought it'd be a fucking riot to never say, hey Percy, you'll turn into a fucking chimera someday!"
The light spire reached above his head, and Percy looked down. "Fuck this. Fuck everything that's ever happened to me. Fuck my genetics. Fuck me ever trying to be the good guy. Fuck me." Throwing his head up into the sky, Percy screamed.
"FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!!"
As if on command, the light that had been surrounding him suddenly formed into a drill shape, smashing into the ceiling above him. The light vanished when Percy had stopped screaming, chunks of earth falling on him. He looked down, silent for a moment. He inhaled and exhaled harshly a few times, before looking back up at Kelsey. He wasn't expecting much, to be honest. No reaction. A shimmer appeared along his back, slowly forming into a silhouette of wings, projecting the stars and galaxies...
"I can't say I understand what you're going through either. But let me ask you this before I leave. Do you have any faith in your friends? Do they know you're even here?"
And with that, Percy extended his astral wings, flying up through the hole he had just made.
"♫ Or... he gives a sword, Or... a pair of boots, If... he brought what's worn, Or... their glass of wine, Or... a cup of power, Host... a piece of food, Sing... will help us sleep, And hope... ♫"
There was a rumbling sound from deeper in the cave. A flash of green light. Something else was in here with these two.

"W...? Percy, when did I imply...?! Why the hell would anyone ask for...?! I wouldn't- HEY!!!"
Before Kelsey could get a full sentence out, Percy busted a hole in the ceiling and took off on her. She swiped at him with her shadows, gaining only loose grips on his coat and ankle that he immediately slipped out of. Soon he was out of reach, leaving Kelsey to stare lividly into the makeshift skylight, eyes ablaze, fangs erect.
"PERCY, GET YOUR SCRAWNY, HORMONAL *SS BACK HERE! YOU NEED ME! I'M THE ONLY ONE WHO KNOWS WHAT THE F*CK YOU REALLY ARE!!!!!"
Something kept Kelsey rooted to the ground, stopping her from simply flying after the craven little moron. She knew that if she got her wings out at that very moment, the chances of her catching up to him were highly likely. But as she watched Percy fly away, even after coming all this way to talk some sense into him, even though she still had so much she wanted to say, some strange weight in her chest kept her firmly grounded, filling her with a sense of genuine apathy. A sense that fighting this fight would yield no winners. And as she dwelled on this thought, Kelsey found herself asking... if he didn't care, why should she care?
"YOU KNOW WHAT?! FINE! FINE!!!" Somehow, even from a distance, Kelsey's voice could still be heard loud and clear. "LEAVE US! SEE WHAT GOOD THAT DOES ANYONE, YOU SELFISH LITTLE SH*T! IF THAT'S WHAT YOU WANT, WE CAN AGREE ON ONE THING! F*CK!!! YOU!!!!!"
A few deep, ragged breaths. A few angry shivers to disrupt her rigid form. Then Kelsey slumped forward, tears dripping to the floor, soft, airy sobs hissing through her clenched teeth. She hardly even noticed that in the midst of her screaming, her horns had grown out, her claws had sharped, her skin had turned a ruddy pink... practically all of her demonic traits had shown themselves. At this point, it just felt natural to her.
With her shoulders slumped and her head hung low, Kelsey turned and started walking back the way she came. She didn't look back. She didn't second guess herself. She simply gave in to the emotional numbness that had slowly been consuming her. There were more important things to worry about. There were people counting on her to make herself useful. She didn't need to waste her time shouting at a brick wall.
"I told you, didn't I?"
"HRARGHH!!!" Less out of surprise and more out of rage, Kelsey turned and swiped her claws with all her might at the astral doppelganger that had suddenly appeared next to her. Her hand simply phased through Tri, who didn't seem the least bit bothered by this attempted strike.
After shooting her a deadpan frown for a moment, Tri snorted through his nose and offered her a subdued, coy smirk. "To be fair, you're not wrong either. Why bother helping someone who won't bother to help himself?"
Kelsey scowled at her master, then she let out a huff and continued on her way without a word.
"Oh, come on, don't take it so personally," Tri grunted as he casually floated after her. "If there's one thing I've learned about humanity in my lifetime, it's that 99.99% of it is populated by morons. You alone can't cure that. Yeah, it's a shame that this kind of unprecedented miracle fell into the lap of one such human by pure happenstance, but like you said, control is a myth anyway. Even those who achieve that equilibrium on purpose have no idea what the hell they're doing to themselves."
"Tri..."
"But hey, I'm sure we can agree on one thing: You're better off without him, but he's definitely not better off without you. He's gonna regret tossing you guys to the wayside, believe me."
"TRI!"
"What?"
"SHUT..."
"...the f*ck up, I get it." Tri folded his arms and turned away, accepting Kelsey's terms with little more than a hard frown. "But just so you know, we're not alone in here."
"Oh, there's a big surprise!" Kelsey hollered, waving her arms in exasperation. "Someone's watching us in the spooky cave! I'm so surprised! I think I'm gonna have a heart attack and DIE from not surprise!!!"
"Wow, girl. Not even the Dead Sea is that salty."

"... It's too late, idiot. You can't go back. You turned down help from the one fucking person that would understand just what you're fucking going through."
Percy reached to the sky. Cloudy, just like the world he had just left. Traces of what he guessed was the sun. He sat down once he deemed himself far away enough from Kelsey. Inhale, exhale. Running a hand through his mop of hair, he pushed some of his bangs to one side, covering the empty socket. He pushed them back to their normal position. Not like anyone would care what his corpse would look like, right?
He stood up, a faint crunch audible beneath his feet. "Huh?" He looked down. The grass wasn't a healthy green. Rather, it was brown. "What the hell...?" Looking around, it wasn't just this patch. Rather, as far as he could see, all of the grass was brown. "Dead." His breathing picked up, his pace increasing. His ears perked up; no bugs, no birds to be heard. Just wind.
He passed by an old, mossy tombstone. The moss was also brown. "Okay, what the fuck? What's going on?" His pace picked up further. If memory served him right, it was identical to the cemetery he had left. It seemed as though this was identical to the world he had left, except everything was dead. How fitting.
"Where is everyone...?"
---
"Oh, hello again."
There was an echoing purr from within the cave as the green light grew stronger. "I didn't expect to see you lot in here. Just finished having an argument with the biggest freak on the island? Or rather, the soon-to-be-former-biggest-freak-on-the-island?" A laugh. A laugh that sounded soft and breathy. "Don't be afraid, my dear. I am not here to harm you. I merely came to give you a fair warning."
Mara's voice seemed to grow louder, even as she sounded more distant. "I have received some disquieting news about your boyfriend! Now, why don't you come out and ask this kitty just what she dragged in?"

Kelsey slowed to a halt. She didn't look startled by the voice. Merely confused and irritated. Her narrow blue eyes glanced towards the green light a fair amount of scrutiny, unwilling to justify a response to her unseen stalker.
"Oh goody, cat puns," Tri blurted with a playfully weary smile. "We're dealing with a bonafide original here, folks!"
"Like you're so above using puns yourself."
"I do that to annoy you."
"You do it very well, then."
"Lighten up. You will take your punishments like a man. Anyway, we should see what this thing wants."
Kelsey let out a begrudging sigh and raised an arm. "If you say so."
Her fingers clenched. The shadows tightened. Without moving the rest of her body, without disturbing the scowl fixated on her face, Kelsey swung her arm forward, yanking the black cat out of the darkness and dropping it on the ground several feet in front of her.
"You..." Kelsey immediately took to analyzing the creature. "You were watching me after my assault on the angels' ship. What do you want now?"

"Why, I'm so glad you knew I was there. I was afraid my words had been wasted on an unconscious girl."
Poisonous. Mara stared up at Kelsey before hovering up to her eye level, grin growing ever larger. "Why, my dear. The commanding angel is going to kill your boyfriend. Why? Oh, just a little ritual. A little ritual to a cosmic horror in exchange for power." Her glowing tails writhed like tentacles. "You know, the normal kind of rituals." She licked a paw, revealing a sickly green tongue.
Mara's purrs restarted, looking back up at Kelsey. "But he knows when you'll be powerless, my dear. That's when he'll strike. So, I guess this isn't really a warning so much as it is me letting you know that Paul is destined to die."
---
"Okay, this is fucked up..."
Percy had tapped a stopped car. Nobody was there, but there was a slimy substance covering the gaps. He didn't want to know. "Hello?" Nothing. Dead silence. He stopped and sighed. He hadn't seen another living thing for miles. It was just him, alone in this dead world.
... Or so he thought, until a fist slammed into his face out of nowhere. He yelped, reeling back from the impact. He felt more fists slam into him, rapidly piling up the damage...
"GAH!!!!"
---
"And while we're talking of mortal men, I believe somebody has found your not-friend." Mara glanced towards the exit of the cavern. "Oh, feel free to stay here, my dear. Feel free to pass up a chance to bolster your powers further. Because that world needs a living soul."

"Excuse me?" Kelsey took a single step back, engaging in a defense posture as she shot Mara a hard glare. "He's not my boyfriend."
"I-It's not like I like him or anything, BAKA!" >///<
"Tri, go in the corner."
After telling off her archdemon, Kelsey turned back to the cat. "Whatever this is about a ritual, the green a**hole was already out for Paul's blood. I already had plenty of incentive to throttle him. But exactly how in the hell does he know about my vulnerability? How do you even know that?!" She narrowed her eyes. "Are you f*cking with me? Do you even know what's gonna happen to me?"
Kelsey then raised an eyebrow, not quite understanding what Mara was getting at with that last bit of information. Granted, maybe it was because her mind was currently focused on Paul, but seriously, who was she talking about? "Okaaaaayyyyy, are you implying that I'm supposed to-?!"
She jerked in place. A sudden heat coursed through her veins, sending her heart aflutter. Distress ignited in her chest for reasons beyond her knowledge. Startled and confused, she looked to Tri, who was standing facing the wall purely for humorous reasons. "What was that?"
"Oh, that was me. My bad," Tri responded, looking over his shoulder with a shrug. "I may or may not have given the kid the Mark of the Master."
"You...? Tri, why the hell would you do...?!"
And then Kelsey understood. For a while, all she could do was stand there mortified as the realization sunk in. Her theories about this cave. The emotions she picked up through Tri. Her ruined plan. Everything Tri had told her. Everything she had told...
"Sssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhh*T!!!!!"

"I don't feel the need to disclose my methods of gathering sensitive information, my dear." Mara's pupils narrowed, her last two words sickly sweet. "But you are dealing with a race of sociopathic magical shapeshifting birds. In fact, they may be spying on us, your friends, the crime against the Mother... as we speak." The cat demon didn't seem overly concerned about this, however, merely examining her hooves. "That's probably the scariest ability they have. How do you know your friends aren't actually disguised angels?"
Mara turned around, twisting her neck unnaturally to face Kelsey again. "Alas, I have some things to take care of in our world. By the way, if you want to return safely to your original world, bring something of that world. Here you go." A tendril extended, holding the jar that had been forcibly dropped in the cemetery, setting it down at Kelsey's feet. "Do take care, my dear. Try not to die before your life clock runs out." And with that, the cat sunk into the shadows, slithering towards the exit...
---
"GAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!"
The fists kept coming, slamming into his scrawny body. And yet, for the life of him, he couldn't fight back. Not even a spell against his invisible attacker. Then again...
I don't want to be alive anymore.
Percy felt metal tear through his skin, leaving torn fabric and trails of red. His assailant's weapon was like itself; invisible.
A searing pain. A sudden stop.
To those present, it would seem as though Percy had been stabbed through the torso by an invisible blade. His lone eye was dull, as if accepting the end of his life.
M-Maybe in death... I can find peace... Maybe... I'll get answers...
As the invisible weapon was removed, the brunette fell limp, collapsing face-first on the floor. His limbs were splayed out awkwardly, a red flower blossoming below him on the ground.
A grey light rose from Percy's torso, to be snatched away by an invisible hand, it seemed.
