Bakura caught the first glare, and stopped. Anpu had seemed a bit more... well, willing to change than was normal. Had he done something to Souji? However, he responded well enough and Bakura relaxed. Either he was just nervous or he'd known it wasn't Anpu. Bakura found himself thinking if it was just that it wasn't Anpu, Souji should remain upset. He couldn't keep Anpu from doing things well enough, he deserved part of the blame. And it was his soul, somehow... Bakura found himself frowning. Karma, maybe? He was like Anpu in his last life so now he had to go through this hell?
He flinched as Souji spoke again. Asking if it was really him. His eyes slanted and he turned away, not sure what to say. He was pretty sure now that Anpu had done something. He'd been fully suppressed the entire day, judging by the light. At a few points he'd gotten emotions as a result of the way they were linked, but he'd not fought the supression. Now he wondered if he should have. He realized he hadn't answered Souji's question and looked up.
"Yes, but if it wasn't there'd be no way for you to know," he answered honestly as he took a few cautious steps up the stairs, "Anpu can copy me if he thinks he needs to."
"Adachi, you complete fool. You dropped an entire file...?" Anpu pretty much facepalmed, but he made a point of letting Bakura hear him.
Bakura blinked, and his eyes turned to the file folder Souji had under his arm. Bakura looked back at Souji. He had no idea what it was about. The fact that he'd focused on it was a bit suspicious, though...
----------
Ryoji stayed behind Minato. He wasn't armed, and his only choice for fighting was one he really didn't like. It was draining. After that first time, he knew it gave Death a chance to get a foothold. Even with what Nyx had said, he doubted it would be anything but a calling card for her, either. He didn't want to ask Minato for the sword, either, although he was pretty sure he could use it. It could be blamed on his connection to Minato, but he suspected it had just as much if not more to do with his true form. It was very similar to the Persona known as Thanatos (Ryoji made a bitter face at that. Not Thanatos, indeed.) and both had a sword.
Souji was probably in a position to be seen right when they left the hall, although the light was muted for the time of night.
----------
Atem held out his hand when they reached the stairs. He hadn't heard any further noise yet. It didn't stop him from being worried. He could only think of two things that could really set Souji off. Adachi or Anpu. Or both, for that matter. He more than understood Souji's hatred for the Thief King. Atem was the one who had lost his kindgom, his friends, his life due to actions the man had taken. Still, he doubted a direct and mundane approach would work. Especially with the familiar case of Anpu working with a law enforcement official.
Set's father had been on Anpu's side. In the Memory World it had been rather reluctant, he was sure. In history? The man had been willing to do anything to get Set on the throne. The man had finally gotten his way. At the cost of so many lives. Atem might have held the Pendant had it been around his neck. At the cost of so much.
Yuugi opened his mouth to ask if Atem was alright. The former Pharaoh had stopped. Atem shook his head at that point and looked down the hall. He'd been stuck in his memories long enough his eyes had adjusted. He saw Souji, his back was turned and facing... Bakura. Atem wasn't aware he was holding his breath. Yuugi was, however, and quickly came onto the stairs. Souji seemed calm, did they really have to worry...?

Souji narrowed his eyes again, "Is that so." He still wasn't in any better of a mood, and the only thing keeping him from raging on Bakura was the knowledge that it actually was Bakura talking to him, not Anpu. He doubted Anpu would share the knowledge that he could copy Bakura's every mannerism so willingly. He still wasn't taking his eyes off of Bakura, though.
And then Souji saw Bakura focus on the file. He shifted it again so that he had an even better grip on the folder. "You're heading home, right? Tell Adachi that if he wants this back, he can come beg for it."
Souji... Izanagi warned.
Shut up Izanagi, Souji shot back. Izanagi really didn't like where this looked like it was going.
------------------
Minato hadn't been aware that he'd stopped in his tracks the moment he saw Souji until after a couple seconds. Souji was standing down at the end of the hall, and he was talking to Bakura. And Souji looked pissed. Now that he thought about it, Minato hadn't seen Souji since he left with Yuugi earlier that day. Something might have happened since then.
Or, there was still the factor that Souji just really hated Anpu. Minato didn't blame him. Souji had gotten kidnapped and nearly killed twice over because of this guy, once because of Izanagi, and once because of Izanami.
"...And while you're at it, tell Anpu that if I find out he's been poisoning any more little kids, I'll personally wring his little neck," Souji growled. Minato's eyes widened. Did Souji just say what he thought he did?

Bakura looked depressed as Souji indicated the file. He wasn't sure what it was, but Anpu had made a point of letting him it was Adachi's. And likely something Anpu knew about. Something the Thief King had caused as well, in all likelihood. He did nod towards Souji's question though. Home? He supposed he thought of it that way, but he was sure Anpu saw it as little more than a place to crash.
Atem didn't say anything as he heard Souji talking to Bakura. He saw Souji squeeze the file and focused on it. What was important about that file? He felt Yuugi push his way past to get closer to Souji. He seemed calm enough, but he wanted to ask about the noise earlier. Souji's expression was enough to convince the short teenager Souji had been involved. Adachi too by Souji's words.
Ryoji didn't say anything. Still. Souji seemed very angry. Very angry. The scarfed teenager couldn't recall seeing Souji that angry. He was pretty sure that noise had been from Souji now. That shout had sounded like it was Souji. If Nyx had surfaced, he could have asked her about Izanagi, but he wasn't going to call her up for that.
Besides, Ryoji thought as he closed his eyes, I don't want to talk to her more than I have to. Maybe Death is her avatar, but I don't want to accept her more than I have to...
And then Souji gave his warning. Yuugi stopped cold. Atem narrowed his eyes. Ryoji's brain tried to derail. And Bakura's eyes became saucers. He took a step back, as if he were going to run, but he stopped. He looked at Souji closely, but he saw no signs of a lie. Why would Souji need to lie, anyhow? Souji looked pissed, but if he knew Anpu had been poisoning people. Of course he was pissed, that was awful.
"Wha-what did you say...?" Anpu said.
His face was nothing short of appalled horror, it was painfully clear Bakura hadn't known about that. Had Anpu really did that? Maybe he'd misheard, he knew it was a vain and desperate hope, but he had to ask. Anpu wasn't saying anything, merely observing as usual. Anpu had poisoned kids. Bakura could guess why, and his eyes flicked to where he saw Yuugi. He also knew how, or at least suspected.
He didn't know where Anpu had put the vial, but he found his hand wandering to his left side anyhow. It had been inside the trenchcoat there he had put it before, even if he was wearing a different trenchcoat now. He stopped before he actually touched the coat, but it was a movement the others wouldn't likely miss. Thing was, if Bakura could he'd take out the vial and smash it now. But Anpu would stop him. He knew Anpu would stop him.

Souji didn't fall out of the glare he was in as Bakura stepped back and hesitantly asked his question. Bakura wasn't the one at fault here, that was painfully clear as Bakura showed his surprise at Souji's statement, but Bakura was the one whose body Anpu inhabited. This was the only way to directly send a warning to Anpu at the moment.
"I said I'd wring his neck if he poisoned any more little kids," Souji said. "Oh, you didn't know about that last part, did you?" Souji pulled the folder out from under his arm and opened it up. "Sakura Nakajima. Age 8. Found dead today around 2 PM, died probably only an hour earlier. Cause of death was her heart stopping due to the large presence of an unknown poison. Judging by the condition she was in when they found her, probably the same poison Anpu used on me." He closed it again, just as Bakura's eyes flicked to somewhere to the side. Souji followed Bakura's gaze. Oh crap, Yuugi and Atem were both here. If they'd heard him, then Minato and Ryoji probably had too. He wasn't actively looking for them, though.
His gaze narrowed again as Bakura reached down by his left side. "What's in the pocket, Bakura? Or are you Bakura after all?"
Minato became aware that he too was holding his breath. He didn't like where this was going. At all. He couldn't remember the last time he'd seen Souji this angry. And the way he was talking to Bakura made him think that he just might bring Anpu out after all. He was getting the feeling that Bakura probably hadn't been active at all today, too, judging by Bakura's reaction to that threat.
And then Souji explained what was inside the folder. Oh crap. Something like that, plus Adachi's apparent involvement... no wonder Souji had blown a fuse.
Souji sighed. "Just go." He pointed down the hall toward Adachi's apartment.

Bakura had known the hope was vain. Was stupid, really, but he'd had to hope it. He'd had to hope Anpu wouldn't go that far. Souji all but taunted him. Well, Anpu, but it might as well have been him. Being forced to be the surface personality meant he'd have to take any abuse aimed at Anpu. And then Souji had gotten into specifics. Not just poisoned. Killed.
The teenager looked startled as Souji asked if it was really him. He looked down to where Souji had indicated and realized his hand had gone towards the pocket where the vial had been on the old trenchcoat. His hand dropped quickly. Bakura still looked horrified. Killed. That word repeated it over and over. Anpu had killed someone, using his body. At the end of the day, that made him the killer, didn't it? He was Anpu's reincarnation, it was his body. No court would buy the story, and even if it did they couldn't let him go. Letting him go was letting Anpu go. And Anpu knew that, too.
Atem looked away with a deep scowl as Souji revealed the death. Their hands were tied. If they killed Bakura, there was only a chance they'd kill Anpu. The Ring functioned the way the Puzzle had. The "spirit" would not die unless it was dominant. The "host" body would die as well, but it would be only the host body that died if they were active. Yuugi opened his mouth, and closed it. Then he opened it again.
"S-Seta-kun, is that... no, I know it is, but..."
Ryoji's eyes had widened. So Anpu wasn't just a thief, he was a murderer. At this point he wasn't sure he'd stop Souji if he went to kill Bakura. It was awful. And Bakura, in all honesty, struck him as the type that would sacrifice himself if it would save lives. Hell, he'd already proven he'd do that. Running in front of effing Death proved that. Telling Izanami he'd be willing to take whatever she had planned for Atem to save him had been nothing short of proof. So he couldn't be sure he'd stop Souji if he tried to kill Bakura. His eyes flicked towards Adachi's door. From what he'd heard, if anyone was to blame it was him.
Bakura wasn't moving. His face was frozen in horror. That one word, over and over. Killed. Anpu was, and in an indirect way, he was... a murderer. Dammit.

"Just go, Bakura!"
This time Souji yelled that, and motioned even more strongly for Bakura to leave. He'd heard Yuugi's stuttered words, and he knew that the others were watching him. And now he was starting to get a little angry at himself for what he'd said. Damn, he couldn't go one day without doing something irreversably stupid, could he?
He sighed, and his grip on the file loosened a bit. Shit. He'd lost his temper on Bakura, not the person who really deserved his anger. Bakura was just the guy's host, not the one who had killed all of those kids.
He looked back toward Yuugi and Atem, and he finally saw where Ryoji and Minato were standing. Damn, he'd been right, they had been watching.
Have you finally calmed down, Souji? Izanagi asked. He'd been staying quiet as Souji requested, if only because he had been worried, for several reasons. And he doubted it would be constructive to their whole "lets be buddies so neither of us have to be pushed out" thing.

Bakura jumped and took a few quick steps forward. He hesitated at how close he had to get to Souji to get past, but managed to slip past. It was pretty clearly not Anpu at this point, as if it wasn't before. The poor teenager basically tripped over his own legs and only avoided a faceplant by grabbing the handle to Adachi's apartment. He looked down the hall, his eyes already getting wet. Ryoji and Minato were there. Bakura wrestled with the handle before remembering Adachi's paranoia.
"Adachi-san!" Bakura said, hitting the door a few times in a knock. His voice shook a bit, he seemed like he was going to break down as soon as he got into the Apartment.
Yuugi looked pained as he heard Bakura shout Adachi's name. Bakura really seemed to trust the man. The short teenager took a few steps down, and hesitated next to Souji. He closed his eyes and took a breath before turning to Souji. An eight year old girl? That was how old Nanako was if he remembered right. It was no wonder Souji was losing it here. He chose to let Bakura be and turned to Souji.
"Are you going to be alright, Seta-kun?"
"Do you want to be left alone?" Atem asked.
Ryoji looked down. He felt terrible for Bakura. He looked up again and his muscles tensed up as if he were going to take a step towards Bakura. He stopped. Adachi had probably gotten home, so he'd answer quickly. He knew who Adachi was thanks to Teddie, but still... if it was someone Bakura really trusted, maybe it was better.
"Minato..." Ryoji spoke in a low voice, keeping one eye on Bakura. He didn't want the white haired teenager to hear him ask his question.

"...Sorry, sorry! I should really get you a key..."
After about a moment, Adachi pulled all of the locks open and opened the door. His jacket had since been taken off, and his shirt was open. It looked like he'd been examining the rather large bruise that was already growing on his chest from when Souji had kicked him. Damn, that had hurt.
He had been in the middle of saying something when he realized Bakura looked like he was close to tears. "H-Hey! What's wrong?" He looked down the hall. The Seta kid was still out there? Didn't take a genius to figure out what had happened after what Souji had done to him. Souji had probably started freaking out on Bakura too.
Minato turned to Ryoji. "What is it?"
Souji watched Bakura run down the hall, and turned back to Yuugi and Atem when they addressed him. To be honest, no, he was feeling like shit and didn't think he was going to be alright, and yes, he did want to be alone, but he shook his head to both questions.
"...Goddammit. I should have known Anpu was up to no good. I just wish I had the rest of these files, instead of just the one on the dead kid. I'm going to go grab a paper tomorrow, see if I can find out everything that happened. They're not going to release everything, but it's better than nothing," Souji said.

"...it is unlikely we could have stopped him even had we known, Souji-kun," Atem said. It was a hard truth, but it made it no less true, "I probably doesn't help to know this, but I doubt his aim was to kill the girl."
Why did he target a child in the first place, though...?
"Atem, let's go back to the apartment..."
Atem blinked and looked at Yuugi, who had already turned around. Yuugi was actually pulling back? Yuugi? The former Pharaoh's face flooded with concern. That was out of character, even if his Partner knew Souji wanted to be alone. He glanced between the two a few times, but finally nodded. Sometimes it was better to leave people alone, he was just confused that Yuugi was doing that.
"Ada... are you," Bakura glanced back at Souji and shook his head.
He quickly went into the apartments. He realized he would have been crying on Adachi's chest had the man been clothed. Even now, if that huge bruise wasn't there. That had to be from Souji, Bakura hadn't missed the look on Adachi's face. He didn't close the door behind him, instead sitting on the couch. He covered each of his eyes with the palms of his heands and laced his finger tips through his hair. He was trying not to cry, but the shock was winning out.
He was sure Adachi knew, the man was a police officer. Was there a need to give Adachi the specifics...? His fingernails dug into his skull just past his hairline. This was far worse than the other spirit had been, and he found himself wishing he could have that torture back if it would rid him of Anpu. Rid him of a murderer inside of him. "Dark Bakura" had done some awful things, but an eight year old girl... Anpu had killed an eight year old girl, and he wasn't talking.
Ryoji paused as he saw Bakura go into the apartment, and continued speaking quietly "Is Bakura-san safe with Adachi? He seems to trust him, but I'm worried it will blow up in his face. I don't think he can take another shock anytime soon."

Minato sighed. "I really don't know, Ryoji. I want to not trust Adachi, but it looks like he really does care for Bakura..." He shook his head. "We should head back to our apartment too."
He looked back at Souji, who was leaning up against the wall of the hallway. Souji didn't look like he wanted to talk at all.
...I'm sorry.
I'm not the one you should be apologizing to, Souji, Izanagi said.
I... I know, I just kind of lost it out there... Souji said back. He put a hand on his head. ...What do we do now?
We go back to our own apartment, like the others.
I don't think I'm going to be sleeping anytime soon.
I didn't say to sleep.
Souji stood up off of the wall. "I'm going back to my apartment too. I'll see you guys in the morning."
----------------
Adachi opened his mouth to say something, and closed it right afterward. He didn't think he could say anything to help at this point. Finally he sat down next to Bakura and put a hand on the crying teen's back. He really couldn't think of anything else to do to comfort him. Bakura had to be going through hell. What had happened with the Seta kid out there probably hadn't helped. He'd managed to catch a few bits of conversation from what he'd heard Seta yell before, and it hadn't sounded pretty.
The next time Anpu was active, he had a few choice words for him. Four kids. Probably more. He knew Anpu had been testing his stupid poison, but that didn't make things right. Especially since his "tests" had ended with someone dying. Dead people didn't exactly divert attention from someone.
-----------------
When Yuugi and Atem got back up to their apartment, they would find that there was a new email on Yuugi's COMP.

A few moments passed. A few tears managed to run down Bakura's face. He didn't look up when Adachi put his hand on his back. He'd twitched a bit, so Adachi would know he was aware of that, but there was no acknowledgement beyond that. After those moments passed he wiped his eyes. He thought of berating himself, but he stopped. Breaking down as perfectly justified in a case like this, after all. He wiped his eyes again and looked towards Adachi. His expression was grave, the kind that made it hard to be sure if it was Bakura or Anpu.
"Adachi-san, what would you do if you didn't have me to worry about? If it was just Anpu?" At least the way of speaking was Bakura's.
Bakura thought he felt Anpu focus in a little more. That's right, the Thief King, the murderer needed to listen. Bakura had a feeling he knew what the answer was, but it was likely Adachi would answer differently to spare his feelings. If he wasn't there, Adachi could arrest Anpu, if nothing else. It was getting to the point that he thought maybe that was better. Bakura's eyes narrowed, and he looked away before Adachi could respond.
"Leaving is always an option."
"SHUT THE HELL UP!"
Anpu seemed startled at the reaction. Bakura turned back towards Adachi and resumed waiting for a response.
----------
Yuugi was surprised to see the COMP light flashing. He sighed and walked over to it, opening it up. He didn't recognize the sender, but he opened it anyhow. He blinked. Atsuro, right. Yuugi looked pained as he read the message. He'd known, in his head. But having the fact that K1 wasn't human anymore presented like this was... well, painful.
"...Partner?"
"Atem, I..." Yuugi wanted to say he didn't think he could handle this. He shook his head and sat down on the couch, "It's from Atsuro-kun. He told us we could ask him anything we wanted."
Atem closed his eyes, "I don't think there is much we don't know, one or both of us, Partner."
"I know... I can guess a lot of what happened. I don't want to admit it, but I can guess it. K1-kun has changed so much..."
"I really don't think he's K1 anymore, Partner. It seems some time has passed since we saw him last..."
Yuugi's eyes widened, "I can ask him that, I guess."
Yuugi hit send and popped his knuckles one hand at a time. It was a pain choosing the letters. He really didn't understand chat speak, so it was the best he could do. He let his arms fall into his lap and looked at the television. Speaking of problems, they hadn't seen Teddie all day. He hoped he was okay.
He felt Atem's hands on his shoulders, that firm squeeze the former Pharaoh was known for doing. This time it only made him more depressed, and Atem let go before coming around to the front of the couch and sitting. Yuugi looked at him sadly. There were so many things... even Yuugi was having trouble seeing them working out this time. He felt another painful twinge of homesickness.

Adachi sighed. Once again, Bakura had given him a hard question. He didn't know what would be the better answer; a lie or the truth. He was looking at the floor while Bakura looked away from him. Bakura looked like he was about to break. And he knew Bakura's presence at this apartment depended on Anpu's whims. Should Anpu dislike the answer to this question, he'd probably leave the next morning.
Adachi took a deep breath before answering, which caused him to wince a bit. Damn that Seta kid. Why was a kid with less muscle than him so strong? At least he hadn't broken anything.
"...If you weren't here and it was just Anpu... I'd probably kill him," Adachi said. That wasn't the entire truth. Actually, if Bakura wasn't there, he wouldn't have agreed to work with Anpu and probably would have just pretended the kid was just another crazy on this stupid island. But with how involved he'd gotten with Anpu, with how much he now knew about him... killing him would be the better alternative.
-----------------------
A responce came within about a minute of Yuugi's reply.

"What are you plotting, Ryou? Even if you ask Adachi to kill you, I'll live. You can't force me out."
Adachi would see Bakura hesitate. He had seemed satisfied with Adachi's response just a moment earlier, too. The man would realize he'd given Bakura the answer he wanted. Bakura looked at his hands, his expression dark and flat. He seemed in thought for a few seconds. Finally he nodded and looked up at Adachi.
"Back in my home world... Yuugi-kun and Atem-san shared a body. Do you know how they split?"
----------
"Atem, what do you make of this?"
Yuugi lifted the COMP and showed it to the former Pharaoh as the response. Atem took it and read over the screen. Full Moon, huh? He paused for a moment. Well, the best they could work with was context. Atsuro had also mentioned the new moon. He handed the COMP back to Yuugi. Three months. Atem didn't want to think about what Abel would be like a few years down the line. If he was alive, there was a chance the Hebrew god would be dead. It was worrisome as it seemed that god was not only real but the most powerful of the ones existing in Abel's world.
"If I had to guess, the moon's cycle effects Abel's moods... but the current situation conflicts with the implications here."
"I can't believe K1-kun has hurt Atsuro-kun," Yuugi indicated the line about the teenager being reprimanded.
Atem said nothing. He looked away, his eyes a bit distant. It wasn't hard for him to believe after seeing Abel earlier that day. The case was probably that they'd all been reprimanded by Abel in such a manner. He and the King of Bel had held quite a standoff today. He knew Abel would even go so far as to kill one of his court if it came to that. It would be less of a stretch to see him killing the group Atem currently considered friends. Including himself or Yuugi. So he didn't say anything. Yuugi probably knew that, but was trying to deny it.
Yuugi hit send.

And Adachi tensed up. Oh, he knew. He more than knew how they'd split. Sort of. The fact was, he'd had a direct role in their splitting, after all. He knew a little bit about how they'd split. Because he'd been stupid enough to drop the Puzzle into the other side. Well, he had been feeling threatened by the short kid and his weird other personality.
He looked away from Bakura, clasped his hands together, and looked down at them. Oh, this was not going to be a fun question to answer...
"Er, yeah. A little bit," Adachi said. "You see, there's this other world that people can access through TVs, and what happened was, the Puzzle fell in. I don't know what happened on the other side, but somehow or another it lead to Atem getting his own body."
Actually, now that he thought about it, this might work... kinda. Except he'd told Anpu before what his "perfect crime killing method" was.
--------------
The next response came quickly enough.

Bakura blinked. The Puzzle fell in? Yuugi was nothing if not protective of the thing. Or at least had been. Knowing what he knew now, Bakura realized it was probably not the Puzzle he'd been protecting. It was probably Atem. Really, it didn't even have to do with them liking each other, either. Yuugi was like that for his friends. He frowned a bit. Was Adachi lying to him...?
He looked at the Ring and lifted up and let the prongs chime together. It really was like wind chimes. Bakura wanted to ask Adachi to put them both in there if it was the only way. The Ring had never been a thing he could remove by choice. There were maybe ways he could manage it, but Anpu would stop him. The issue was more that Anpu was so damn aware. If he could just keep the man suppressed for five minutes, it would be enough for something to be done.
"Adachi-san."
Bakura looked back towards Adachi. His expression was grave. He wanted to stress how serious he was. He made certain Adachi was focused on him. He closed his eyes and took a breath. He felt he could word this in a way that wouldn't force Anpu to take control.
"Adachi-san, if you see an opportunity, take it. If you think you can get the Ring into that world you mentioned, take it. Even if you have to throw me in there, too."
----------
Atem gave a very bitter smile as he saw Yuugi grin a bit. It fell quick enough, and Yuugi was back to looking depressed. The former Pharaoh lifted his hand, but stopped. Yuugi was depressed enough he was leaving people by themselves and not getting any encouragement from a shoulder squeeze. His hand dropped, and Atem turned towards the powered off television. He felt frustrated, in several ways. And the only one that had any kind of visible solution... well, the solution feld horridly manipulative. He turned back towards his Partner and waited for the conversation to continue.
