If you asked Toby Grayson why he had returned to the island, he would be unable to give you a straightforward answer.
It seemed like there were plenty of reasons, to be fair. Most of his friends were here and entangled in a new adventure. Toby could understand their dedication, and he felt just as inclined to help Evan along the way. But... this place just never really felt like home the way that Summer Snow Valley did. Everything was just so vast and unpredictable, and while the valley was pretty much the same, the phenomena was at least somewhat routine, and he could take comfort in living in a small, cozy environment, surrounded by the people he was happy to call his family. It was so great to return to that peaceful little patch of land. During his brief homecoming and his reunion with his roommates, Toby felt like a great weight had been lifted from his shoulders. He finally felt safe and at ease back in the valley, in Maple House with Jason and Therel.
So... why did he come back?
Despite his devotion and the gravity of the situation, it was hard for Toby to truly justify his rationale. At first, he had merely intended to visit his friends and deliver Evan's birthday gifts, but upon arrival, deep in his heart, he felt like he needed to stay. He didn't want to, but everything within him told him that this was where he needed to be. So he stayed. And he felt miserable for it. Everyone insisted that he could go home if he wanted to, but it just wasn't meant to be.
And so it was. Evan, Swift, Patrick and Ace were entangled in the recent events ignited by Sburb while Jen, Darien, Andromeda and Aether held down the fort and kept on the lookout for any useful information regarding the mission. Toby mostly stayed out of it. It was too confusing. Too massive. What he wouldn't give for some peace and quiet...
Why he had decided to take a walk through the cemetery of all places was yet another mystery to his own heavily-plagued subconscious.
He didn't really bother to dwell on self-evaluation. He just needed to get out, get away from the chaos, and this felt like an appropriate place to go. With his head down and his hands in his jacket pockets, Toby trudged along the path that split the plots of land dotted with headstones. Much like the island in general, this just felt like the place he needed to be.
